This is absolutely incredible to watch. We do these in just about every Aikido Class in the AWA, AAA, and Ki Society schools. But to watch the man who created the exercises run thru them all, amazing.
This is a great video! To see these exercises performed by the founder of Ki-Aikido is very informative. I can see nuances in them of which I was not aware.
It would have been better had he done them without the Hakama and the camera had kept his feet in the frame at all times. But, heck, can't have everything.
The crudest interpretation would be ai = life, ki = energy, tai = body, so = harden. When tai and so are used together it means conditioning. This can range from stretching to hardening of the bones for strikes. Aikido is not about striking though. The best translation would be aikido conditioning.
Thank you for the post. I always find it interesting to observe the differences in style that exist between different practitioners who ostensibly practice the same art. Rather than get hung up on which one is "right" or better, my personal interest is in broadening my horizons and expanding my mind. I had the privilege of observing Tohei Sensei demonstrate aikido 30 years ago, and still have the wooden tea cup with his kanji autograph. Check out my video at Chiropractic Adjustment for my slant.

Not really similar to kata, taiso is similar to the word calisthenics.
A kata is a more complicated series.

Well that is... different.
In Kobayashi Aikido the Aikitaiso is fairly different in the execution.

@edmanr2003 he isn't, it's koichi tohei, teaching shin-shin-toitsu-do. one of the principles is to let your breath flow naturally.
