At about 1:10 Page says, "It's a proud monument to its owners' love of the sport." Unfortunately, since then it's become a monument to its current owners' stupidity.
Sure, the Delta Force music is dated, but I don't think anyone with any appreciation for the Indy 500 and its long history can argue that the movie-themed ones of recent years (Sin City, Perfect Storm, etc) get anywhere close to setting the stage for the race as well as these did. Remember, this is a showcase event. Some viewers don't already know the storylines. Paul Page used to do this so well, you could have crawled out from under a rock yesterday and you'd still know what's going on.
I miss these intros unfortunately i dont think they will be coming back any time soon. I read this blog that ABC/ESPN announcer Paul Page had written and it said that he made the producers and ABC people promise never to use the Delta Force theme unless he himself wrote and narrates the intro. It was a very special thing they did every year in creating the intro for the 500. unless he became the announcer again it wont come back. i guess that explains why they have not used it in recent times.
That does make sense. Really, since Paul Page's departure there hasn't really been anyone on ABC's Indy team who would have the knowledge of or the appreciation for the race and its history to do this kind of thing anyway.
Yeah it was an interesting blog it talked about how one of the people from abc would spend the whole year going through all kinds of footage and videos that represent the history of the speedway. than they would go through and hand pick what specifically they wanted to capture for that particular year then paul page would write up a great intro and they would film it the week of the race and show it to the whole broadcast team the friday before the 500 he said it used to really pump up the team
yeah it would. Paul announced with enthusiasm,, as if a true fan of the sport was calling the race. he raised the excitment during a close and hard fault battle. He also had a passion and great appreciation for the sport and its history. and that is something indycar and the indy 500 needs. someone to share the great history of the sport and appreciate the great moments that have occured
Paul Page, Al Unser and Sam Posey were the best announcers for the 500. Nobody else could make you feel and understand the importance of the race. I hope Page comes back one day. He'll be on the IMS radio network in 09, I'm looking forward to hearing his voice. 8 days to go
I know I've got nothing on those people that go to the Indy 500 year after year, but this year I went to my first Indy. I hope that everybody that appreciates this video would go to that race at least once. From the military flyover to taps to "Back Home Again In Indiana" to "...Gentlemen Start Your Engines" and then to have my seats on the straightaway just past turn 4 and witness the start.....talk about emotional! I'll never forget it!
Good timing! I wrote that post like 9 months ago. What did I get in today's mail? My ticket for this years Indy 500 (only my 2nd), but I'm glad to be sitting in Section H again, but this time (I think) on the top row... I'm glad because I should be able to see turn 3, the short chute and turn 4 better than last year.
What did you think about Vitor Meira's pass of Scott Dixon last year on one of the restarts going into turn 1? That one I had to watch on one of the screens, but it was sure gutsy.
This one really is emotional. Watching AJ make his final lap was difficult, very sad. I was only 5 then, and appreciate this. This brings back some great memories. I never realized how much I would miss these great intros, or that the intros would become so terrible today. Thank you very much champcar4ever for posting these gems.
Bring back the turbos and Paul Page for these intros. IndyCar racing is still more about speed/talent less about marketing. Thanks to the unification.
I cry every time I watch one of these intros..This race was once the greatest event in the world as far as racing goes..F1 drivers flocked to Indy just to race in this one race..now, Indy is just seen as a stepping stone to NASCAR or F1. Thanks Tony.
Tony also reunited the two series. I think he learned his lesson that he had been "had" by NASCAR and F1 who both advised him to split CART.
Now we have a unified series and sure the 1990's of the CART well never be replaced but maybe its not fair to compare then to now. We should support the racers of today no matter what the situation is. That is Indycar that is American open wheel thats just American. Corny yes but its true.
Yeah, can't really compare the two . . . 2 different eras of men and machine. But with the merger, its heading in the right direction. It'll take a little time two, can't undo over a decades worth of damage in a few months.
And for NASCAR, ugh. . . I think its sacrilege they're allowed to run there. You watch Brickyard 400 on T.V. and they pass it off as the 2nd biggest race under Daytona. They sound like they own the place. What bullshit.
well said, we shouldn't dwell on what has been done that we can't control, and i continue to watch and have enjoyed this year much more than the past 12. tony has finally accomplished what has needed to be done and if people would give it chance i think it can only get better from here
Your right. ABC-TV's intros use to be so classy and dignified, now it's so pretentious with lasers, sound effects and bizarre graphics.
After all those legends (Foyt, Unser Sr., Mario Andretti, Mears)retired and then the CART split, Indy was getting back to having some (at least) popular names, and what happens? Franchitti and Hornish sell-out!
In case your curious, I am going to make a Delta Force intro and Delta Force Starting Grid for this year's race. It is going to similiar to these old ones.
I am in no way Paul Page, but I am going to give it a shot.
@dpate23 You are spot on with this great comment. Ever since the IRL got it's claws on the event, it just does not seem the same. The old champ cars were far superior in look and sound. I once thought the IRL cars sounded like a constipated bumble bee. It would be good to see the F1 drivers trying to qualify. I'm sure that many would if given the opportunity. Perhaps the F1 organisers need to look at their schedule, and not over crowd the month of May.
THIS was the glories of Indy that withstood the Formula One'ization of CART in the early 1990s. Indy was actually still incredibly interesting...because it was still the Races at the same Grand Ole' Track of the past...now 99 years, this August.
I loved that music they used for the intro, it's from the movie "Delta Force." They first used it on the 1988 Indy 500 intro, then for many years after that.

He should do it in 2011. He is the best living 'voice' of the 500 and it would be perfect for him to call the race then!
