“When I hear new music coming into my head, its mission is integrated into its notes. It basically tells me how it wants to be.” – John McLaughlin. From Page 1 of the book “Follow Your Heart – John McLaughlin song by song.”
McLaughlin's solo on this is beyond words. I am stunned by his absolute virtuosity, and I have listened dedicatedly to him for over 40 years. Oh, how his playing brings me joy!
It's known as a drone acoustic.Along with the shortened "DRONE" strings that run through the sound hole, it has a scalloped fretboard which is essentially like playing a fretless!!!!One of a kind.
His statement of the melody at the beginning is just breathtakingly gorgeous. His ability to vary his picking dynamics at that speed are really extraordinary.
His statement of the melody at the beginning is just breathtakingly gorgeous. His ability to vary his picking dynamics at that speed are really extraordinary.
Shakti included fantastic musicians: not only guitar player John McLaughlin, but also violin player L. Shankar, Zakir Hussain (on tabla), Ramnad Raghavan (on the Mridangam) and T. H. "Vikku" Vinayakram (on Ghatam). This was extraordinary, even though one regrets that Johnny Mac over-dominated his exceedingly talented partners. In particular, he kept L Shankar way too much under control ! Thanks for the vid !
I saw Shakti open in 1975 for The Steve Miller Band I think. Shakti were incredible! However, the album did not capture what this poster has captured here. The energy, musicianship and good vibes all come together here. Thanks for posting!
@Bongofury361 That is the customized "Shakti guitar" made by Abraham Wetcher, another supra mega ultra guitar that only McLughlin got, like the Double Rainbow, you can hear it on "between nothingness and eternity" of Mahavishnu to "visions of esmerald beyond".
Simplemente son los percusionistas mas extraordinarios que haya escuchado, a esta versión le faltó la maestría de Shankar falto su solo que esta en la grabación original y que muestra su virtuosismo. Gracias por este agasajo musical. Dankeschön.
Had this "album" (vinyl) several years ago - 80's (?) - have looked for a re-release on CD but unable to find it. Have one Shakti CD but this is not on it.
listen to Michael Tsarion on the youtube. He is the worlds premier conspiracy researcher/lecturer/author. Leo Zagami and Dr. Bill Deagle are highly informative as well.
I miss L.Shankar, he has really gone way out in left field these days. Calls himself 'Shenkar' and is putting out the most god-aweful pop-tart stuff. So far removed from his sublime classical roots.
hey! I was there, too, it was my 2nd time seeing them. They also had appeared at the Kennedy Center with Weather Report, still have my tix stub. The CD concert was fantastic, just as shown here. Saw Shakti Remembered in Tucson in early 00's for my third chance to hear this great music.
I saw them live in 1978 and didn't touch my guitar for 3 months. Felt like everything that could ever be said on my instrument had been said that evening...
What is more beautiful than a composition of music that when you listen to it brings a feeling of joy and relaxed exitement to the perceptive intuition? I love it!

I definitely need to explore this band and Mahavishnu Orchestra, more!
