    Very nice technique of playing:)

    I meditated!

  • he looks very high

  • More good-high quality original Shakti please PLEASE!!! Thank you for this!!!

  • JUST AWESOME!!!!!!

  • Johnny Mac - always ahead of his time.

This must have been from his MTV "Unplugged" performance...

  • yes i do

  • He was a great guitarist. And I am so sad to say that he is dead.

  • @Vishu95100

what are you talking about ????????

  • The greatest living guitar player. And it's not only my opinion...

  • Stunning......

  • SICKEST PLAYER EVER.

  • Saw them in 1978 at UofW. Didn't touch my guitar for six months. When I did, I wrote a Six String Raga.Best thing I ever wrote...

    brashki99

  • @CookTheBruce great story

  • WHY CANT WE BUY THESE ON DVD??? ITS A CRIME!

  • AMIGOS !!!!! es un placer escuchar tanto virtuosismo......GRANDE SHAKTI....lo descubrí el año 79....UFFFF

  • nice one!!!!

  • mnyacak bulu roma aku!

  • i would love to know where i can buy the entire recording of this if there is more.

  • WWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

  • ahm lovin this.faster than abumblebees wings..hari bo hari boxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Fantastic. I heard Shakti in my early teen years for the first time, and have been following McLs work since. Thank you for posting.

  • Indiajazz, give us more

  • McLaughlin's solo on this is beyond words. I am stunned by his absolute virtuosity, and I have listened dedicatedly to him for over 40 years. Oh, how his playing brings me joy!

  • I JUST LOVE THE WHOLE THINGS BIG CHEER TO SHAKTI

  • John plays with precision and melodic, harmonic and rhythmic intelligence.

  • @keo774.absolutely:) he is a genius

  • @jbmadhouse imho he's the best guitarist ever

  • It's known as a drone acoustic.Along with the shortened "DRONE" strings that run through the sound hole, it has a scalloped fretboard which is essentially like playing a fretless!!!!One of a kind.

  • John is the best in playing: acoustic or electric it is nice. He is a good composer too.

I have liked his music since I first heard it

  • His statement of the melody at the beginning is just breathtakingly gorgeous. His ability to vary his picking dynamics at that speed are really extraordinary.

  • His statement of the melody at the beginning is just breathtakingly gorgeous. His ability to vary his picking dynamics at that speed are really extraordinary.

  • what kind of acoustic is this?

  • @CrimsonCleff it's just john mclaughlin's kind of music....

anyway, he was on of the first musicans to mix two kinds of music, so he created what we call "world music"-

  • ...festin de martins pècheur....

  • Its crazy

  • this is so much better than the remember shakti version.............

  • its like honey's flowing to my ears ! its a feast for ears of whoever listen's this incredible music.

  • incredible energy and fantastic music

  • does anybody know if the guitar that john used in 70's with shakti was a unique guitar that his personal liouter did specifically for him?

if not, it could be a dream to have such an incredible guitar...

  • @keo774 It was a custom made as you suggested, I recall from an interview. Maybe you could also have one custom made, no idea on cost. cheers :)

  • @dschager yesterday i read on a book that it was made by gibson for him.

I think it's the most beautiful guitar in the world. it is a dream for me

  • how f**kin good is that....raw energy

  • Fusion at the greatest.

  • of course I like it

    John is the best

  • Great, but I hate that we don't get to hear L. Shankar's solo.

  • this is exactly what music is.

  • Shakti included fantastic musicians: not only guitar player John McLaughlin, but also violin player L. Shankar, Zakir Hussain (on tabla), Ramnad Raghavan (on the Mridangam) and T. H. "Vikku" Vinayakram (on Ghatam). This was extraordinary, even though one regrets that Johnny Mac over-dominated his exceedingly talented partners. In particular, he kept L Shankar way too much under control ! Thanks for the vid !

  • I saw Shakti open in 1975 for The Steve Miller Band I think. Shakti were incredible! However, the album did not capture what this poster has captured here. The energy, musicianship and good vibes all come together here. Thanks for posting!

  • I guess everyone will understand : GENIAL ! anywhere you come from,up or down...

  • timeless beauty, always uplifting, erases the mundane out of life every time I listen to SHAKTI

I wish my guitar playing could hit that soul spark once in a while... or just once!

  • It was indeed a good hour when jazz met Indian traditional music. Shakti.

  • i love the way they are having fun at 5:00

  • ..eins,zwei,drei..und heppp!!!

  • YES, I LIKE IT..

  • Can someone please tell me if they are and if they are what they are speaking in this song at the beginning? The beboxing kinda rythmicy stuff.

  • @Thephyguy It's called "konokol".

  • @Thephyguy they are saying the rhythm patterns, what you say you play.

  • Excellent!

  • don't worry, i love this song for all others who don't like it :p

    that's pure genius, spiritual, emotive...song!

john is smiling like never, unbelievable!

  • theese guys get no commentary.....

  • GENIUS

  • Wow Yes! I used to have this on vinyl! Lost in the mists of time. I'm going to go out and get the CD now after seeing this. Happy days!

  • i want to play my clay pot like him

  • fadu

  • que chimba.....

  • Fucking incredible!

What-the-hell kind of guitar is Mclaughlin playing?

I've never seen or heard anything like it!

It looks like a guitar but SOUNDS like a sitar! Wow, he is fast, and the percussionists are amazing!

I've always liked and wanted to learn how to play tabla...I think my technique would be perfect for that instrument.

I definitely need to explore this band and Mahavishnu Orchestra, more!

    Awesome stuff!

  • @Bongofury361 That is the customized "Shakti guitar" made by Abraham Wetcher, another supra mega ultra guitar that only McLughlin got, like the Double Rainbow, you can hear it on "between nothingness and eternity" of Mahavishnu to "visions of esmerald beyond".

  • Sitar sound comes from extra strings and scalloped frets.

  • is this zakir hussain?

  • yes.

  • surreal...

  • A classic! Fantastic!

  • Pure Bliss!!! =)

  • Had this "album" (vinyl) several years ago - 80's (?) - have looked for a re-release on CD but unable to find it. Have one Shakti CD but this is not on it.

Thanks very much for the post.

  • greatest jam ever...thnx

  • Great but LOL at the same time :) Very humorous and but great too :)

  • It's la danse du bonheur, not "le danse du bonheur"

In french "danse" is feminine :D

    translation: "The Dance of Hapiness"^^

very nice song, I love it!!

  • @Morpheusneon that is why french is dying because of the french language police ;)

  • @Morpheusneon Thank you for the translation!

I was trying to find out what 'bonheur' meant using wikipedia, but I kept getting French!

Being Canadian, I should know this already...(sheesh!)

Awesome piece of music...I wish I could have been jamming with them!

  • This concert is from?I saw and heard Shakti live in Stockholm.Concert Hall, second row...

  • this is one of my favourite songs of shakti

    muchas gracias!

  • Stunning! The performers shine via their instruments! No effects required. Thanks for sharing 5/5 and fave. (and saved to HD ;-) )

  • I miss L.Shankar, he has really gone way out in left field these days. Calls himself 'Shenkar' and is putting out the most god-aweful pop-tart stuff. So far removed from his sublime classical roots.

  • @HALEYSABAI,

Shenker? LOL sounds like he became a coconut.

  • AAAAAaaaaarrrrhhhhh..... How could it finish here!!!???

    Aren't they brilliant???!!!

  • Fantastic. Thank you.

  • One of the greatest jams in history.

    Pure joy and bliss!!!

  • hey! I was there, too, it was my 2nd time seeing them. They also had appeared at the Kennedy Center with Weather Report, still have my tix stub. The CD concert was fantastic, just as shown here. Saw Shakti Remembered in Tucson in early 00's for my third chance to hear this great music.

  • dank jullie wel lieve mensen......wat ik ook zoek, waar ik ook zin in heb, er zijn altijd wel mensen die delen en m'n dag mooier maken.

    groetjes serge jean portier.

  • Reminds me a Bela Fleck tune

  • bela fleck studies john's instructional dvds

  • I've always regretted missing a concert in Boston with Shakti and Weather Report- thank you Youtube- marvel of the modern world.

  • Oh yes I liked it, sheer joy!

    Tks for the posting...

  • I saw them live in 1978 and didn't touch my guitar for 3 months. Felt like everything that could ever be said on my instrument had been said that evening...

  • What's the name of the drum that not Zakir is playing?

  • That's Vikku Vinayakram playing gatam (clay plot)

  • wild! and fun

  • are u a crazi man????thats alfantastic,,,,shitl

  • What is more beautiful than a composition of music that when you listen to it brings a feeling of joy and relaxed exitement to the perceptive intuition? I love it!

  • Le/la, does it matter? If it was called crock of shit it would still be brilliant! :-)

  • actually its LA danse du bonheur ;)

  • The music of these artists is beyond compare, but the title is: LA danse du bonheur.

  • make you sick!! some folks just have so much talent

  • Love it!

  • Thanks for post llafutaal. Love it a ton!!!!!

  • If anyone wants to hear a 1977 concert of the original line up of Shakti , go to JAZZ FUSION TV (do google search on those words , it come up 1st result) . Click onto AUDIO BOOTLEGS , there are hundreds of hours of fusion concerts . You can find a Shakti cncert recorded SA DIEGO 1977 . About one hour and 40 minutes worth . Concert starts with extended version of "la Danse du Bonheur"

  • Gotta love YouTube...Seek and you shall find... Thanks for posting this. I got the record in the 70s and it's great seeing the original performers play.

  • it's not hindi. it's the way the rhythm structure for the song is verbalized in carnatic music (also in hindustani, I believe).

  • whata group!

  • What a joy seeing this guys, i am having a Heineken. So salud amigos.

  • wow... being only 27 i never though i'd get to witness the original line-up.

does anyone know what the hindi at very begining means ? i'm geussing that it's a count down

  • It's Konnakol. A way of vocal rhythm. Pretty cool stuff, I want to learn how to do it haha.

  • what a music !!!!!! Excellent John, Zakir, Subamanian... all r mastreos.....

  • Music from the GODS!

  • zakir hussain and vikku rule!!!!!

  • WOW

  • JayLough is a fucking wizard on the guitar. Awesome!

  • john is a great musician !

    :-)

..you wonna see/hear something realy innovative - how to improvise classical music ?!

look for video : "bach sarabande jazz guitar"

  • IMHO.. This is the best of John among the Shakthi stars. Brilliant.

  • May all the people responsible for porn ads on spiritually enlightened music like Shakti grow festering bloody boils all over their body, then have their colon explode.

  • Amen.

  • So true. May your curse come true.

  • helal olsun be abiler

  • GUITAR INFO. Guitar shown is one of 2 made drone string guitars built by Abraham Wechter ,then consulting luthier for Gibson. The 1st prototype was non cutaway . This cutaway was delivered to John in mid-1976 . The sring guage for the 6 strings were at first 038 - 009 , later he used 042- 010 . The 7 drone strings were 062 = 023 . 3 tranducers used , one under each bridge. Guitar destroyed when McLaughlin lent it to careless friend.

  • hard to imagine john and shankar having bad blood..`oy did you nick my samosa`...`joke`

  • hola amigos exelente tema de shakti, si puedes subir mas de shakti te lo agradeceria, adios amigos.

  • OMG thank you so much for this amazing find, John, Zakir and the others are all sick!!!

  • Thank You for posting this video finally I got to see this.

    Thanks llafutaal.

  • AMAZING!!!

  • *cuminpantscuminpantscuminpants*

  • I wish John and Shankar would play together again.

  • I heard that they've developed a lot of bad blood between them over the years.

If true, I think it would unlikely for them to play together.

  • Shankar would have been in Remember Shakti, except they could not get a hold of him and by the time they did, they already got Srinivas. It's alright though imo, but I would love to hear John and Shankar toghether once again.

  • Post more-for the love of all things holy!

  • OMG!!!

  • Yes he is!

  • JAYSUS! Fantastic music. I'm chomping at the bit here waiting for the next part of this particularly L.Shankar's solo

  • Who is the fourth guy? Other than Shankar, Hussain and McLaughlin.

  • HE is vikku! fantastic player!

  • I've seen Vikku Vinayak Ram in some of his concerts, when he's on fire, he throws his clay pot upwards and catches it.

  • Cool! But it would be cool if the clay pot crashes over his head!!! Hahahahahahaha!!!

  • i love it !!

  • what chick

  • Fantastic! Shankar eventually moved on to an electric double neck violin... unbelievable!

  • sale hasta el Cifu, que grande!

  • L Shankar does the solo on this song on the album. That would have been way better as he blows John off the map. Cool vid, though...too bad it wasn't longer. I'm sure Shankar kicks in later.

  • Shankar´s solo on the album is very very beautiful. John off the map? I´ll try upload the rest of the vid but I have problems with uploading! I´m trying it.
