@nashi55 i mean't brand wise, my understanding is the Ruger sells the Mini 14/30, but doesn't produce the m1a, springfeild produces m1a but isn't the best. on the other hand, people also say that honda's have bad transmissions, so i guess your milage may vary. maybe just get a min-14 with an aftermarket barrel, not sure...
@600trillion Fulton Armory produces their own M1A version. It's more expensive but may be worth it to those who will use it (in competition) and really want the best. I felt the SA M1A was a good choice based on what I read.
@nashi55 holy shit dude, thanks, for some reason the company isn't mentioned as a producer on wikipedia, sure they are expensive, but they look worth it, and a 1.5 MOA .308 with built in troy chassis sounds like exactly what Im wanting. [ Fulton Armory M14 SOPMOD ] , give me a new buttstock and it's a 10/10
@600trillion Fulton builds a better receiver. Is it worth it? That depends. Usually, when people compare brands, they speak in nuances. "The Ferrari is faster than the Lamborghini". Well when the Ferrari goes 238mph and the Lambo "only" goes 237 - the statement is true, but does it matter? More importantly, are YOU ever going to get the opportunity to find out? Are you going into to full-time combat, or do you just need a good rifle to defend home & country? I've had NO problems w/ my 3 SA's.
@2ndarymotion doesn`t matter dude, my needs are partially collector, partially I want something to hunt with and a home defender, Fulton Armory M14 SOPMOD is my rifle, waiting on it now.
@Ironandtheshizzelz Never shot an AR so I can't compare them directly. I think the M14 would have the edge at greater ranges based on what I have read.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but arent the military rounds higher pressure than civilian rounds? For example,anAR 15 can fire 5.56 or .223 Rem,but you shouldnt try firing 5.56 in a Mini-14 becausethe ar can handle higher pressures.Right?
Actually, there are more civilian rounds that tend to be hotter loaded than military spec ammo.
Just by looking at the ballistics, you can find civilian ammo with higher muzzle velocities for a given projectile weight, which indicates a hotter load.
@Atombombstudios I threw that target away a long time ago. I did good, but the range is only 25-30 yards. The M1A makes even me look good. Maybe next time I'll keep it and post a vid.
@megaspencer You can watch the other vids to see me shoot standing - judge for yourself. I feel it move up, but can't stop it completly. No way to control at more than fast semi auto speed and be accurate.
I wonder if you put a very specially design muzzle compensator on there... But obviously it's not a machine gun it's just a real good semi-auto rifle ain't it?
@DobermansRock take the magazine out. rack it(cycle bolt and let it go home) put the safety on. flip the rifle upside down. pull up on the trigger guard in back and remove the trigger assembly. so you end up with 3 parts(stock, reciever, trigger group)
you should really shoot only 7.62x51mm in that gun. Thats what its chambered in I believe. But to double check it should say right on the barrel what its chambered in. And no, .308 and 7.62x51mm are not the same round. They are very similar though.
7.62x51 and .308 Are the same round. The .308 however is a more modern loading and has much more pressure involved. It is not rec. to shoot .308 in a weapon chambered for 7.62x51, but its fine to do it the other way around. Military rounds have lower pressures than commercially avail hunting ammo as well, so that might be something to consider.
externally they are the same yes. The 7.62 is made for machine guns, therefore it has a thicker brass case which results in less powder making chamber pressures less. Also the internal neck angle is different too. If the gun is labeled 7.62 dont shoot .308 in it. Pressure may be too high for the gun to handle.
@Trackadvantage Springfield told me twice the M1As are chambered for 308but they can also shoot 7.62x51.
Based on everything I have read the two rds, although very similar, are not actually IDENTICAL...different cases and pressures. They are close enough to be used in some rifles like the M1A. It's chambered for 308, so the lower pressure 7.62 is fine.
@triggerfingas Well I have always read that 308 & 7.62x51 are not identical despite what some say. They are very close but the cases and presures are not exactly the same. The M1a can handle both, but it's chambered for 308 per SA.
@nashi55 the 7.62 NATO has thicker brass giving it much higher initial pressures if the firearm isn't designed to relieve that pressure (I believe they do that with a longer throat)
@eifersucht2 I have read the same thing for 308, that it had higher pressures than 7.62. The thicker case meant less powder in 7.62...and thus less pressure than 308. Many articles have said, a 308 rifle can usually handle 7.62 without issue, but not always the oppoiste is true.
I guess further research is required......... Perhaps I need to contact Federal & Remington for the staright story - they should know!!
no, they are not interchangable. however, weapons that use NATO cartriges can fire civilian ones, just not the other way around. its because pressures are too great leading to malfunctions
@s197stangdragger ....Springfield told me twice the M1As are chambered for 308but they can also shoot 7.62x51.

Um, I;ve been on the Sprinfield Armory website.... Thanks for calling me weirdo, by the way. That's an awesome way to make friends and show gratitude when people try to help you out.
Simply put: it banned rifles with certain features like larger magazines, flash suppressors, bayonet lugs etc. It has expired so you can buy rifles with those features. So yes you can own semi-auto versions of the M16....as long as you live in states that allow them. You can read the details on the web - lots of articles with all the details are out there.
Yes, you can own full auto versions. If they were sold prior to the bans, they can be transferred to you. Fees and forms involved, but my understanding is you can own them.
I thought that you can't own a rifle that has a detachable magazine in California. You can only own rifles that are top loading only. Like the orginal SKS minus the bayonet, flash supressor, or grenade launcher. So I'm not sure if the M1A is legal to own in California unless the flash supressor is removed and the magazine is nondetachable.
I know the 10 round law California has but I read that there is a law in California that you can't have a rifle with detachable magazines. I believe it was a law that passed back in 2005. I don't know this for sure because I don't live in California, thank God. I was just seeing how un-2nd Amendment that state has gotten. Yep it's quite bad.
Here is the catch. In Cali you can own a rifle that has a detachable magazine as long as it does not have a pistol grip. You could own a Mini 14, but not an AR because the AR has a pistol grip. Mods can be made to an AR to make it Cali legal, but you have to install a "Raddlock" which require the use of a tool to remove the magazine. All magazines..... both pistols and rifles have a 10 round limit. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the clairifcation on that law. However what prevents you from carrying multiple mags? This 10 round cap makes no sense when you are not limited in the amount of ammo you can carry on person or in a gym bag. The pistol grip law makes no sense either. Rifles with pistol grips are always fired from the shoulder and never the hip. I guess Cali. believes what Hollywood makes is true. These laws only address the look and not the functions.

True, it's not that nice looking. But overall the M1A is a fine rifle. Focus on the nice wood stock, thick barrel, and heavy receiver. You'll overlook the handguard.
the heat shield isn't quite as attractive on the models with wooden stocks as it could be, but if you go with a fiberglass or other synthetic stock the heat shield blends much better and actually adds some nice asthetics to the rifle

the heat shield isn't quite as attractive on the models with wooden stocks as it could be, but if you go with a fiberglass or other synthetic stock the heat shield blends much better and actually adds some nice asthetics to the rifle
