Giong backwards from indy to f1 is a step up where he never did anything then down to nascar where all he has caused is wrecks round and round he should go back to karts and start over
This predecesor of IndyCar, called CART was best time of american open wheel motorsports. Now these days IndyCar's suck, they dont require as much skill as old good CART required.
you can see CART as the original indycar series. After the split up, it took years for me to call them ChampCar or CART. For me this series was always the original PPG IndyCar World Series.
@Nocito87 ok i hear you! i have been a lover of cart / indycar since the mid 80s (1984 indy 500 was the first indycar event i saw and i fell in love with it) so i get your point completely!!! and agreed....the irl / cart split destroyed what was p[otentially the greatest sinle seater series in the world and its only beginning to recover now but still has a long way to go!
@imleafer Quite a career considering he didn't have the luxury of driving a Ferrari. Great is a bit of an exaggeration, but to say he sucked is outright stupid.
This crash and the crash Montoya had in Australia in the following race almost caused Montoya to throw away the championship. Franchitti was able to tie it up in the points but Montoya won due to more wins. 1999 was an exciting season unfortunately it ended with two tragedies with Moore and Rodriguez.
Cuando no!! Montoya dando las noticias estupidas!! siempre anda en lo controversial, sera que le gusta llamar la atencion con esta clase de estupideces?
Bad but not the worst. Top honors go to the Andretti's for running into back of a safety vehicle at Detroit - lol. And don't forget Mario cleaning off the right side of his car on parked car at Toronto. Stupid Stupid Stupid.
ummm i believe the Top Honors for bonehead move should go to Kevin Cogan in the '82 Indianapolis 500 when he started in the middle of the front row in a Penske entry and took out several big name drivers(Foyt, Andretti, Mears, etc.) on the PACE LAP...the race was red flagged before it even got started
Your talking about someone that lost it after a mechanical failure accelerating to the green flag vs. someone that ran into the back of a safety truck under a yellow flag at 20 mph whilst the entire field passed safely beforehand. No challenge, Andretti gets the bonehead award. And besides, as Johncock '82 Indy 500 said publicly, Mario could've easily avoided Cogan as he did if Mario had stayed in Row 2 like he was suppose to. Foyt was not taken out & in fact lead the opening laps.
I suggest you actually look at the video before insulting my intelligence. Cogan got excited and nailed the throttle and let off which caused the car to grab and run into Foyt, WHO DID NOT LEAD THE OPENING LAPS. Cogan says it was a mechanical failure but he was running in a Penske car...they dont just have a mechanical failure on the pace lap...
Sir, I've seen the video countless times. I have the entire broadcast on videotape. I'm not sure where the rampant history revisionism is coming from ... are you only viewing the incident & not checking out any other part of the race?? YES FOYT DID LEAD THE OPENING LAPS!! Google it or pull out your Indy yearbook, it's solid fact. Foyt earned my respect with that one. The crew repaired the minor damage in about 10 mins & Foyt made the start. Any other driver woul've tiptoed but Foyt excelled!
With regards to Cogan & the Penske cars: Just because their Penske's doesn't automatically make them exempt from problems. Remember Penske's failed to qualify in '95. About 2 weeks after this incident, Penske teammate Rick Mears had a nearly identical accident @ Michigan during a private test, as publicly reported by IMS historian Donald Davidson on IMS Radio. Penske never went public about it but Mears said the mechanical failure that happened to him is exactly what happened to Cogan.
@Juank0120 Indeed he did. Unfortunately, I posted that 2 years ago when I was ignorant and a know nothing on CART. Since then, I have done my research and love everything about CART.
@1337saklart I basically wanted to say that he made more .... "inconsiderately" maneuvers than any other F1 driver. Typical case of leadfoot without looking what's happening around him.
This wreck and the one he had a week later in australia, almost cost him the title that year, it got real close and the title ended up in a tie and montoya had more wins so he got the tie breaker.
He often has poor judgement and doesn't see the whole picture. Basically he doesn't have the patience to do things properly and puts others in a bad spot by reacting and not calculating. I firmly believe he ran away from F1 because he was told he'd be in the trees at high speed if he did one more unsafe act. He knew they were serious and knew he could not change. So off he went. He is now driving in obscurity in an oversized car series. What a waste of talent, but I guess deservedly so.
montoya really is a prick now hes in Nascar and thinks hes a hotshot but he sucks...his team hate him....without mentioning what he did to his teammate in the NNS series in 2007...he made his teammate crash and finish last just so he can finish first.
Hell yeah man, those reynards were perfection for a race car. Sleek, and fast!!! I miss CART. I always went to the Gold Coast race. I was even lucky enough to go to Fontana in 99, I was there when Greg Moore died. RIP
montaya is an average driver. he is an aggressive driver, but he does not control the car like others. so he often gets into trouble. if he would use his head and brains more he would get even better results.
i know enough about racng to say that montoya wasnt a good driver. just driving fast is not being a good driver. i mean, every half decent driver would be able to see the yellow flag, the stationary car and slow down... montoya is a crash driver. spectacular yes. good no.
How is he paying for it? He's been outperforming all the other Open wheel drivers every week. Dario and Jacque doesn't even have rides in cup anymore and Hornish Jr. barely qualifies every week. If anything, he's doing just fine.
You obviously don't know what the hell you're talking about 7 wins (including Monaco, Monza twice) 30 podiums in 95 races in equipment that was no match for Ferrari's is failure???
i wouldnt say 'equippment that was no match for ferrari', williams had the strongest car in mid 2003 when he won monaco, he won 3 races for mclaren when they were by far the best albeit unreliable, and he won in italy in 2001 because the williams bmw engine was one of the most powerful on the grid. Montoya didnt achieve what he promised but he was far from a faliure
he didnt live up to expectations in f1 no, but look at what else hes achieved, won the CART championship in his first attempt in 1999, blitzed the field in f3000 in 1998, won the indy 500 at his first try in 2000, nearly won in his third grand prix in 2001, won the daytona 24 hours race twice and on top of all that he was one of the most entertaining guys out there, he is a star in my eyes, not because of his achievements but due to his adaptability and entertainment.
yeh he did alright, but considering the hype around him through 1999 and 2000 he didnt deliver to expectations. He is however one of my favourite drivers that has been in f1 and out of it also, great all rounder
I was a young boy around 1999/2000 I think I was 9 or 10 . but I remeber juan was my favorite indy car driver and he's the guy who got me into f1 racing :D .and it was mostly because of the *hype* around him. even though he did not win I think he did really well because he did not crash alot of times and he prove that he can handle f1 car :D .sometimes I wish he stay in f1 still because that is where he belongs :D , nascar is no good :\
Prick! I'm sorry but i just can't stand the man! From what i've seen in interviews and other stuff, he's just an arrogant spoilt brat. He's an awesome driver and i respect him for that, but not my cup of earl grey! lol
You simply don't know what speed is all about. And I mean real speed. A lot of todays drivers have said that they are afraid of Indy, that includes Michael Schumacher and AJ Allmendinger. Ask Nelson Piquet, too.... No other type of motoracing has crippled or killed so many drivers as Indycar oval racing, it just pushes the human and technology abilities over the limit. Those who do it by no means are the best in the world.
indy just killed so much because of the speed... if you are crashin a wall with over 300 km/h your chance is survive is quite low ;)
in formula one there arent so much accidents with >300km/h and if there is someone then there a safetyzones with gravel and tirewalls... and not a direkt wall...
furthermore an f1 chassis is safer than an irl/champcar or whatever chassis
You say that Indycars are safer on ovals ask Ralf Schumacher, but you also say above that no other type of motor racing from Indycars has crippled or killed so many drivers. People will get confused =)
@AJ1964 coz with tyres and other aero factors make indy cars more forgiving on ovals, f1 cars put too much strain on the tyres on ovals due to the high downforce
come on people he is the only person in the world to win a cart cup a formula 1 cup and a nascar cup.....who else can do that? only montoya? so why do u say he is an idiot a dick? and he won rookie of the year for nascar
That doesn't count. Because F1 is all about the team and car for whom you are driving. Nascar is simply too slow and too heavy for racing(by Montoyas own words, when he was real and could drive). Both doesn't require high driving skills, if you win it means you're lucky. The best test for drivers is thge IRL IndyCar series and Indy 500 and he has won it. That counts.
I guess it woud be easier for me to take 90km/h turn as fast as I can rather than to slow down from 380km/h to 330km/h to take the Indy turn (or should I slow down just to 335?).
Sorry to Answer: But it's ass difficult but different.
At Indy, you need reflex because of the speed and to go progressively when at Monaco you need to control the car to get in the turn well and to speed up again, so you could be less progressive.
The extension of this comparisons is this: Who's the Best, Loeb at Chypre or Mark Donohue on the 917-30 at Talladega? Boot are fucking hard to do...
That idiot just like you said won the championship in his first year, and if your more intelligent go and drive one of those cars, and became champions, all of you are so stupid, think before post.
Oddly enough those two were at Paul Stewart Racing in England in 1995, Helio for F3 and Montoya for Formula Vauxhall. I know cos I was doing work experience there! Btw, Montoya's a dick in real life, Helio's cool.
I recall this very well, I was sitting in the main grandtstand on the frontstraight and saw Montoya clip Helio.
Very curious that Montoya didn't see Castro-Neves (as he spelled it then). In a newspaper interview, Juan says no one radioed to warn him, which was followed by a Paul Tracy quip; "Chip was probably looking at his reflection in the computer monitor".
Had Green issued team orders at this race and Franchitti won, Dario would have wound up snatching the championship from Montoya.
thank you i was getting ready to say the same thing, CART series, not IRL - which officially use the IndyCar title and CART uses ChampCar, they should all just kiss and make up for the good of the sport cause CART is about to go under anyway!!
He's just an idiot and loser. Only loser can win in 7 F1 races and only an idiot can win an Indy500 in first attempt. He had always been such an idiot and he will be. NASCAR already suffers from his idiotic moves. Idiotic win in texas - what a moron! Wrecking Smoke and a lot of Good-old-guys in Nextel Open. ROTY will be the most idiotic ROTY in this year.

There has gone inflation in the yellow-flag!
Drivers dont respect that much, because it is waved in all sort of situations were there NO danger at all!
At least that is how its like i F1.
So when there really are danger ahead, no one pays attention.
Stop using the flags, when a car has come to a hold in the graven 200 meters from the track, and that kind of stuff!
It creates danger in other situations!
Michaelingolfhansen 3 years ago

yeh he did alright, but considering the hype around him through 1999 and 2000 he didnt deliver to expectations. He is however one of my favourite drivers that has been in f1 and out of it also, great all rounder
f1diva 3 years ago

He's an awesome driver and i respect him for that, but not my cup of earl grey! lol

"Montoya, Crash, Stupid"

You simply don't know what speed is all about. And I mean real speed. A lot of todays drivers have said that they are afraid of Indy, that includes Michael Schumacher and AJ Allmendinger. Ask Nelson Piquet, too.... No other type of motoracing has crippled or killed so many drivers as Indycar oval racing, it just pushes the human and technology abilities over the limit. Those who do it by no means are the best in the world.
AJ1964 4 years ago
indy just killed so much because of the speed... if you are crashin a wall with over 300 km/h your chance is survive is quite low ;)
in formula one there arent so much accidents with >300km/h and if there is someone then there a safetyzones with gravel and tirewalls... and not a direkt wall...
furthermore an f1 chassis is safer than an irl/champcar or whatever chassis
bamboootscha 4 years ago
though indycars are safer on ovals, ask Ralf Schumacher
AJ1964 4 years ago 3
You say that Indycars are safer on ovals ask Ralf Schumacher, but you also say above that no other type of motor racing from Indycars has crippled or killed so many drivers. People will get confused =)
AlonsoLegend 3 years ago
@AJ1964 coz with tyres and other aero factors make indy cars more forgiving on ovals, f1 cars put too much strain on the tyres on ovals due to the high downforce
krazor14 1 year ago
come on people he is the only person in the world to win a cart cup a formula 1 cup and a nascar cup.....who else can do that? only montoya? so why do u say he is an idiot a dick? and he won rookie of the year for nascar
LectroKid 4 years ago
he's never won the F1 World championship or the Nextel Cup
burtonfan2 4 years ago
That doesn't count. Because F1 is all about the team and car for whom you are driving. Nascar is simply too slow and too heavy for racing(by Montoyas own words, when he was real and could drive). Both doesn't require high driving skills, if you win it means you're lucky. The best test for drivers is thge IRL IndyCar series and Indy 500 and he has won it. That counts.
AJ1964 4 years ago
please. indy isn't the best test, this is only an oval.
THE BEST TEST FOR ALL THE RACE DRIVERS IS:
MONACO FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX
and only the best can drive in this circuit, Montolla wins once, but he isn' the best, he can not drove a McLaren
GRONHOLMMX 4 years ago
No, Indy is the toughest test on pavement. Monaco is slow and Indy has harder walls.
AJ1964 4 years ago
no, well is my opinion, in Indy 500 there are 4 turns and all to left, in MONACO FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX there are 18 turns, 11 right 7 left.
but, is OK, is your opinion and I have my opinion.
do you always watch motor races? send me a message
sorry if I wrote wrong, I speak spanish
GRONHOLMMX 4 years ago
I guess it woud be easier for me to take 90km/h turn as fast as I can rather than to slow down from 380km/h to 330km/h to take the Indy turn (or should I slow down just to 335?).
Not allways, but its exciting.
AJ1964 4 years ago

PORSCHENUTONE 4 years ago
He's just an idiot and loser. Only loser can win in 7 F1 races and only an idiot can win an Indy500 in first attempt. He had always been such an idiot and he will be. NASCAR already suffers from his idiotic moves. Idiotic win in texas - what a moron! Wrecking Smoke and a lot of Good-old-guys in Nextel Open. ROTY will be the most idiotic ROTY in this year.
