nice vid. i got an old legacy model electric rustler with a 9000kv mamba max system and a 7.4v thunder power 40c racing pack. blew my tranny and drivetrain almost immediately. got my steel gears. full ball bearings. proline dirt paws. wheelie bar. so what you advise i do next?
hay what kind of rims did you use for your proline sand paw tire... i have those same tires but i cant find a rim that fits on my rustler vxl, please help me, thanks.
i have a bruhsless bandit and it was working perfect until today... it doesnt turn when u tell it to sometimes and also as soon as u plug a battery in a light comes on on the esc wihtout me even pushing the button. acceleration works fine but the steering cuts in and out, can some one please tell me how to fix. i think it mght have something to do with esc because power goes into it from the battery wihtout me even pushing the ez button. im running nimh and lipo . please reply and help me.:(
I bought a Rustler because of this awesome video and I absolutely LOVE it!!! My only gripe is that is overheats with the stock gearing on lipos. Sand paddles are definitely the way to go!!! BASH ON RUSTY!!!
can anybody help me out here? k, im interested in buying an electric rc. i was thinking the stock slash at first because of durability.. but im starting to think the rustler vxl is a better car. i know the rustler would be faster than the stock slash.. but how durable is it? do any parts break?
I say go with the slash, I have had a rustler, bandit, and stampede. And even though they are basically the same as the slash as far as the suspension, which is what usually breaks, The slash is just more durable. I think it is mostly due to the body design. The parts have more protection, since the wheels aren't sticking out from under the body. I have yet to break mine and I am running a Sidewinder brushless ESC and 5700Kv motor on 7 cell nimh.
No, really I (we) live in a quite small apartment so there's not much space for my hobby (plus the missus has limited my rc-cars to two at a time max.)
Wow..cool video. Brutal power but seems a bit much for this truck even though it looks like you're having a blast! Hope you didn't burn the Mamba up. :)
No probs. With Mamba motors it's essential to seal the hole from where the wires enter the motor. Otherwise you'll get a can full of sand which will most likely destroy windings from motor.
umm.. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "12 cell"?
If you want to go extreme, then your choice is 3 cell lipo. Stampede will be a handful to drive with it and your truck will spend most of the time on it's lid.
With 2 cell lipo (atleast 5000mAh) it is still pretty driveable and your motor won't suffer from heat problems.
Also notice that you need a charger that is capable of balancing your lipos.
If there is something that I hate then it is an overheating motor, so I want to drive my e-firestorm on 3s lipo and don't want to overheat, what gearing should I use? And does the velineon motor stays cooler then the mamba max?
Yup, I think you should go with Velineon 3500kv motor. It has plenty of torque and runs cooler than any Mamba motor (I've tested 4600, 5700 & 7700 Mambas). Proper gearing is always a bit of mystery and depends from many factors (weight, battery used, tires, driveline drag, etc.). Get different pinions from 15 to 23 teeth in steps of two and experiment. :)
I just got a MM 7700 for my bandit and will be using an 18/90 gear set, id like to use nimh as i dont currently have a lipo charger, what are some good quality batteries i could use. I am currently using venom 3000mah and from what i understand they dont have enough of a discharge rate...
I can't recomment anything since I don't really have knowledge about NiMH's today. I think you should seek advice from the Traxxas' forums - monster[dot]traxxas[dot]com
nice video i will be doing the same thing next summer cause i live on an island and theres lots of beach. my maba runs hot on 8 cells but i got like 23 gear pinnion think i should get a 15 and a fan?
fin, car is awesome. I wld like to buy a car like this. Tell me the complete specification. Will i get the same specification as yours in stock or i need to assemble it. If i can get which site i need to look.

Hi I was wondering which you prefer the most the rustler or the stampede I am going to buy one or the other but cant decide which one. I was wondering what the weakneses or or good things are about each of them? Thanks.
With Rustler you can drive faster because of it's lower center of gravity. As a monter truck Stampede is fun to drive, but it'll fall over very easily.
Depends from what type of driving you like really.
i have a truck already i have the older version the legacy and i know how to use it well but i am interested in upgrading witha better battery and a better motor.
Lipo-batteries offer lots of power, but bit expensive and need a special charger & balancer. Also if you're not familiar to lipos, I suggest that you search web for proper lipo handling instructions. No joke, they are dangerous if misused/charged.
With Mamba 5700 2 cell lipo is nice, 3 cell is marvellous... :) 5000mAH minimum, so you can enjoy reasonable runtimes.
If you have NiMH's, use them first and if in need for speed, change to lipos.
okay maybe you could talk to me about this stuff on aim or email. i am very new to this stuff i would like to learn how to use a lipo also you could talk to me about what kind of stuff i would need and how much the battery system stuff would cost i am willing to learn. thank you
do the traxxas have to be geared lower then the T4 or e-firestorm? I run a 7700kv with a 87 spur and a 19 pinion on my E-firestorm...run a 20pinion on the t4 with 87spur... using a 6000mah 2slipo...btw nice video.
There might be differences at the internal gearings which allow you to run with bigger pinion. Mamba would've been burning with that big of a pinion on Rustler, atleast in off-road use. :)
the internal gear ratio on the rustler is 2.72, on the t4 and the e-firestorm is 2.60...so the rustler has more torque. That is what I can't understand. I do use my trucks for off road use only. Im planing to upgrade to brushless, not in the near future, but when the wallet sais so. anyways, i have a traxxas bandit and 11 turn brushed motors with xl-10 speed controle. I also have plastic gears in the tranny. they hold up as long as the fit tight.. if i do get brushless, what should i get, and should i switch to steel gears. I have heard that they create a lot of heat, which gets transfered to the motor.
@finbilly - Are you recommending to upgrade to bearings from stock bushing.. I was planning buy soem stuff from towerhobbies, and was thinking about the DuraTrax ones. How many bearings are required?
Actually the car was sold about a month ago as a roller. Held up quite well until that - broke only the stock rear rim when it hit a rock.
Only small modifications were made to the stock XL-5; VXL idler & diff case, aluminium shock towers & bearing carriers, adjustable camber links and a wheelie bar ofcourse. :)
It gets pretty hot - even with 13/86 gears and aluminium X-Spede heatsink (EMX1038L). After that 3200mAh 3cell pack temps are very close to the max recommended (200F).
Transmission has aluminium idler. Havent't had any problems with it, but Velineon internals (steel idler & steel ring diff) are on their way - just to be sure.
Other modifications are; aluminium shock towers, aluminium shock caps, 5x11 hubs & steering blocks (+ bearings) and RPM gear cover.
Can you really beat the shit out of those cars like that? LOL that was crazy!

Yes, the area is a "gravel pit" from which they haul sand to a nearby concrete factory.

well in short it is faster than a vxl pede as the 5700 on 3s lipo is basically crazy power.
The problem with the vxl pede is its high c of g making handling say for example 3s lipo problematic.

My words exactly.

That seems faster than your VXL pede, what's your opinion? Great Video!

Thanks!
Yup - as chilledoutuk stated above; Rustler is more driveable than Stampede, so you can use more power with it.

that is a monster savaging that poor landscape lol.
By the way what sort of temps have you been getting the 5700 motor too and how has the motor held up to getting hot.

:D
It gets pretty hot - even with 13/86 gears and aluminium X-Spede heatsink (EMX1038L). After that 3200mAh 3cell pack temps are very close to the max recommended (200F).
No problems (yet) with the Mamba though. :)

okay thx for the answer!

any other modifications than the tires and the mamba? i mean, does the cars transmission stand it?
traxxasforever 4 years ago
Transmission has aluminium idler. Havent't had any problems with it, but Velineon internals (steel idler & steel ring diff) are on their way - just to be sure.
Other modifications are; aluminium shock towers, aluminium shock caps, 5x11 hubs & steering blocks (+ bearings) and RPM gear cover.
