This was good until it was ruined with the jokey synths. Nowhere near the original or Al's version. As for Kanye, he should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as Stevie, who walks all over him. Kanye samples real musicians, whilst Stevie gets sampled by rappers. I have listened to Kanye, his music has none of the beauty of Stevie, and Stevie's voice is so much better that there isn't even a discussion to be had.
Stevie Wonder's synthesizer work on this Beatles' "remake" is absolutely PRICELESS! It was a definite indication of the sheer musical GENIUS that was to follow for decades to come. Syreeta was, quite simply, just as talented as she was beautiful. She and Stevie LITERALLY made exquisite music together!
@WrightSounds1 please stop harping on the things you read from the media about kanye, your basing your opinion on something the media writes, the same media who have acquainted themselves the rights to attack kanye ever since the taylor swift incident
@WrightSounds1 What does Kanye West's mindset have to do with his music? Listen to Finding Forever's instrumental and say he's not in the same arena as Stevie. Forget who wrote it and just focus on the MUSIC.
Kanye is a clown, but he's a damn talented one and I for one LOVE his music. He's brilliant. Sadly, people won't really appreciate him until he's gone and you just have his music left behind.
Thank you Billy Mitchell, wherever you are, for turning me on to this in the 70's, when we were both being thrown out of the air force in Lompoc, CA. You rocked then, Billy, and wherever you are now, I'm sure you still do.
Stevie and Syreeta were in the forefront of experimental R&B in the early 70's. This album and Music of My Mind were released around the same time. These two albums must have messed peoples heads up back then!
Brilliant arrangement by Stevie. McCartney must have been really impressed. You can hear Stevie's excitement as he is using his new synthesizer "toys" in '71 and '72. Reminds me of a lot of his material on "Music of My Mind".
Damn!! I Didn't Know Kanye Sampled This! It's Not In The Credits For "Forever Begins". Only Thing That's Credited Is "50 Ways To Lose Your Lover" By Paul Simon. And I Know That's The Drum Sample By Steve Gadd. Damn! I Was Listenin' The Instrumental Earlier Today! I'm Definitely Gettin' This Record When I See It At My Record Store! Kanye Must Have Been Listenin' To This Album Alot. He Also Sampled "Black Maybe" For "U, Black Maybe". Great Tunes. All Of 'Em.
The sound s a hohner clavinet played through a talk box. Listen to Ebony Eyes from Songs in the Key of Life (it's the last track of vol. 1) and check out Stevie on seasame street here on youtube as well.
listen up everybody, that IS a talkbox played by Stevie. He did multiple tracks with it at the time...`To feed it, he's using an Arp 2600. he is not singing through a hose, just feeding the synth through it. ENJOY LISTENING TO THIS WONDERFUL TRACK!
It is not to much it is from a time and place and space. The record that we have her voice and this leading technique at time is something we should get into. Most of the people who are giving the background neg replyies never made a cd. Get into the history of what it is.
Syreeta has a great voice. However, Stevie should have kept his electronic distorted mouth shut. Now it seems the whole Donald Duck family is doing the background voices.
Actually, much of what you attribute to Stevie is NOT his actual voice. At the time, Stevie was promoting a new "technique" he was experimenting with, and that was making instruments sound like they were "talking". He uses it here and he used it on a couple of his own '70's albums.
Thank you for your information. I didn't realise that this could be the case. After listening again carefully, you could be right. Still, the effect used in this song is not very kind to the great voice of the singer, Syreetha.
it's still his voice. I can't remember what's it called, but he sings through a hose. there might also be a wah pedal involved, but the instrument is stevie. there was no other way of doing that kind of phonetics than human voice back then. you can also hear this sound in jeff beck's 'thelonius', which was written by stevie wonder. there's also a live clip in youtube where you can see stevie singing to a hose, making this sound you're referring to.
He is not singing through a hose, at least not here, and you're mistaken about what was available at the time. The sound is from arp and moog synthesizers that were programmed by Robert Margouleff and Malcom Cecil, associate producers of Stevie's 70's albums, in particular "Innervisions," and worked with him at the Record Plant Studio in LA on all his electronic tinkering at the time. The info. is in the liner notes of Innervisions and "Music of my Mind".
Mission94110: search "stevie wonder on the talk box" on youtube. sounds familiar? the method I tried to describe is called 'talk box' and it allows you to shape the sound of the instrument into more human-like, and as you can see on the stevie video I mentioned, it involves a rubber hose. there's also wikipedia page about it...
the technique has nothing to do with margouleff and cecil's synth programming (you can do the same with an electric guitar). their synths (TONTO) didn't produce the syllibals. and there's no mention of this method in the liner notes of the albums you mentioned.
I remember clearly what he said in the interview I mentioned. You may claim what you wish, until I hear otherwise from Mr. Wonder, I don't accept your explanation.
"In 1973, Heil [inventor of Talk box] gave his talk box to Peter Frampton as a Christmas present. Frampton first heard the talk box when Stevie Wonder was using it for his upcoming album Music of My Mind." ok, I've provided enough evidence. be deaf and blind, I dont care.

Al Jarreau has a great version too. All three - this one, Jarreau and, of course, the Beatles, are unique and exquisite.

Are you serious?
Kanye will never be in the same arena of "musical aptitude" or "spiritual awareness" as Stevie Wonder. Not in a million years!
Kaynye is a very unstable spoiled, brat, IMHO!
He might do some things well, but he has a lot of growing up to do as well.
