The Grand Canyon wanted to ban plastic from it's site, but a certain company (supposedly Coke) prevented this from happening. Why? Because Coke has donated millions of dollars and has a say so and has politicians backing it. Why can't Coke just go back to using glass to sell it's beverages? No, really, why? Oh, because glass is more expensive and it's pricier to ship, less money for Coke. Wow, that's not greedy at all!!
Would be a great day when people would wake up and realize as consumers, we have power over companies and that where our dollar is spent matters. Most people are simply too busy or believe they can't make a difference. Grocery stores did not look the way they do now 100 years ago. Corporations have really taken over, especially in America. Even little things. Ever heard of Monsanto seed? Even seeds are profitable when controlled by a large company.
one: its not really a problem if you think people are just stupid.
2: most watterbottles are made to be recycle and are recycled and made into more things. i think its low you half to get celebs just to get a word out. it means more if everyday people who care do the PSA, or have scientist do it.
@mollyisawesome16 Have you watched Plastic Planet or Tapped? And celebs are not the be all, end all (have you seen The Garden? A bunch of celebs promoted it and protested bulldozing it, but it was still bulldozed). And these are hardly celebs, anyway. Plastic is not just unhealthy for the environment, it's unhealthy for animals, for people, it's essentially greed and convenience. If you have studied and read up on the effects of plastics, you might not be thrilled to be buying a pillowcase that
@mollyisawesome16 was once a bunch of plastic bottles. Beyond that, the industry filling the waterbottles are rather heartless, draining community streams and ponds even during drought periods to fill a plastic water bottle and sell it to the very people who live on the land they're destroying. What are plastic bags being recycled to? How much stuff do you throw away everyday? Really think of all the items you trash. How much of it is plastic? Quite a lot. Where does it all go? Last count, I
@mollyisawesome16 less than 30% of plastic bags even get recycled. Some of the clothes you are wearing have plastic in them, the grocery store is a plastic store, women put plastic in them during menstrual periods! It goes on! This was not around until the early 1900s. What did people do before? There were and are ways! People ARE practicing them! Just type in "No More plastic" or "Fake Plastic Fish" in Google; you'd be surprised! I DO wish this ad would have given alternatives, though! Refuse
@mollyisawesome16 the straw! Bring a glass straw (GlassDrhama) or stainless steel (on most anti-plastic sites) to restaurants, bring your own take out box (such as a stainless steel or glass container), find a bakery and meat shop that will put their goods directly in your container, get a pretty glass you like and bring it with you for To-Go beverages, bring your reusable bags to the grocery store, try to buy from companies that use carton or glass containers, use "moon pads" for periods, etc.
@mollyisawesome16 This is beyond just protesting plastic for the heck of it. This is about demanding corporations, who greatly benefit from the use of plastic, to take responsibility and start treating humans, animals, oceans, the earth in general with respect and valuing dignity and integrity over greed and a quick buck. If more people looked into the damages done by plastics and the companies promoting them, there would be a revolution! Not too mention the amt of a money any individual saves
Sea turtles are injured and killed from plastic pollution. Take action to save sea turtles from all their deadly threats, including plastic pollution with the Sea Turtle Restoration Project, a proud member of PPC
@tosarge This campaign is mostly about refusing disposable everyday plastics like straws, bottles, cups, lids, etc. CD cases do end up in the ocean though too! plastic is everywhere!!
@michaelannejello My point is that I hate when entertainers/singers take up a crusade and put the quilt trip on their fan base. Do you think if EX: Pia got a gig that was sponsored by McDonalds that she would refuse the gig because they use plastic throw away crap. I think not.
@tosarge Absolutism is not what is being advocated and neither is guilt. It's about making small substitutions, as much as you can, to help curb the problem. This isn't an anti-plastic movement, it is about making informed decisions and substitutions when you can. Lots of people use disposable plastic daily. Sometimes it is the only thing available unfortunately. The hope is that if you have the opportunity to refuse a bag and bring your own, that people will. Little bit goes a long way.
They do look like cheerleaders - cheerleaders against unnecessary plastic pollution.
Whenever I go out to eat, I always ask for my water or soda with no straw. Do you really need it or use it anyway? Do you really want to drink water (with no quality regulations) from a petroleum-based disposable bottle that will end its life as garbage on the side of the road? I think water tastes better out of glass or stainless steel, anyway.
I for one choose, like the Idols, and refuse disposable plastic.
