  • was dis was in channel pinwheel????????

  • When dad worked at a restaurant in NJ, Alex Trebek was a customer at that restaurant, and they had a brief conversation.

  • Is Alan Lusher still alive

  • it creeps me out

  • it kinda creeps me out

  • Who as the guy who ran across the stage on 2:26 when the contestant was next to Alex?

  • Johnny Olson was the best announcer ever.

  • Did the spoilers have to sit in there with the Double Dare sign down blocking their view or did they just go in there when the bonus game was being played?

  • @snoop0851 Yeah. Cause Johnny Gilbert's been announcing on Jeopardy for the entire Trebek run, and Johnny Olson announced on a lot of other game shows, most notably The Price is Right. It feels so mixed up.

  • look at 2:28 , there's someone running from behind the contestant area

  • It's so weird to hear Johnny Olson introduce Alex Trebek.

  • This is just odd, I didn't even know this exsisted, I always remember it with Marc Summers :-\

  • @MrBrianTV Exactly.

  • Alex Trebek with the jew fro. LOL!

  • This is a much different verison of the 1986 Double Dare.

  • that one guy sounds like rod roddy

  • they stole the theme from Card Sharks

  • Actually Card Sharks stole the theme from them. This show premiered in 1976, Card Sharks came along in 1978.

  • @junkaholic95 I believe Double Dare was cancelled by then, so the theme lived on through Card Sharks.

  • @andrewps84 Double Dare ended in 1977 so yeah, pretty much.

  • Jerry Lee Lewis!?

  • I miss this on GSN

  • actually this came first before Card Sharks did.

  • Goodson-Toddman kinda used the same sound effects and music cues on their shows. It's all owned by them, so it's fine.

  • exact same music as card sharks?

  • no one got slimmed!! D: lol :3

  • @RoboTekno Wrong version of Double Dare that's Marc Summers version of Double Dare not Alex Trebecks version.

  • @RoboTekno this was before nickelodeon

  • This Double Dare is not what I Expected

  • @youngyasha expecting Marc Summers?

  • @smashwhammy yes

  • haha look at 2:28. a crew man runs out from behind the contestant area. But this seems like a good show!

  • and the familar TPiR loser horn ..

  • dude, the 'fro and the 'stache? what?

  • If you watched "Double Dare" on a regular basis and they show the subject of a person, they always accepted the last name of the person.

  • Man, I wish Trebek would look like that now! Shouldn't have gotten rid of the 'stache.

  • Sounds like Card Sharks!

  • whooooa the hair and clothes :)

  • Also Nickelodeons was better.

  • OMG That intro at the start was just like the one on Card Sharks

  • How is this a dare?

  • This is like Jeopardy.

  • "Alex, I would like to take the physical challenge, please." OOPS!!! Wrong game show. LOL

  • With a man like Alex Trebek back in that decade, he is not a bad piece of ass after all.

  • What's with the TPIR Sounds?

  • Mark Goodson liked to recycle. He also used the losing horn and the theme to Double Dare for the gameshow "Card Sharks." The theme to "Family Feud" began as a car cue on TPIR.

  • The closing bars to the "Family Feud" theme is still in use these days as the prize cue for the Grand Game.

  • The losing horn was also used on "Showoffs" when the bonus round was lost.

  • and of course the wonderful 60 minute: "THE PRICE IS RIGHT!"

  • @Permaglo The wind-up sound was also used in Barry/Enright game shows like CBS's "Tic-Tac-Dough" and "The Joker's Wild". "Break the Bank '85" also used that sound.

  • @Permaglo Yes!!

  • @Permaglo Yes!! The Family Feud theme is the car cue from THE PRICE IS RIGHT. The Price Is Right losing horns are from SHOWOFFS, CARD SHARKS, DOUBLE DARE and others from Goodson game shows.

  • @jubjub449 Y'know, it's common for shows produced by the same company for the same network to recycle sounds. A lot of Goodson-Todman shows on ABC used the Family Feud sounds, for example. As would GT shows on NBC using Card Sharks and/or Password Plus sounds...

Then, there's versions of Family Feud in Latin America that recycle 100 Mexicanos Dijeron's sounds... also common with Central-produced shows on ITV in England and Grundy-produced shows on the Nine Network in Australia.

  • I just happened to hear that some company (not sure which) was planning to revive Double Dare! They're currently searching for contestants. And yes, I'm positive it's this version, not the kid's one. :)

  • If you look carefully, there is a man leaping from the right side of the screen at the 2 minute and 27 Second mark.

  • Alan's best performance when he loses to the spoilers is $600.

  • I saw this one episode of "Double Dare" and it was during the spoilers round where Alex said "There's a smile among one of our spoilers, I wonder why." The correct answer had to do with another author which was John Steinbeck.

  • He was my brother in-law

  • Dear Alan, passed last month

  • I hate to hear that. How did you hear?

  • THEY SHOULD BRING THIS BACK.

    lol.

our media would probably butcher this though.

    :(

    i love it anyway

  • This show deserved a longer run than it did.

  • I wish someone would post a full episode of this game. I watched reruns nonstop of this when GSN was playing it.

  • GSN still airs this. Mondays on 1 and 1:30am, though.

  • Alas...not anymore. GSN had since replaced DD with more of that fucking poker tour crap. I wish the GSN of old would return; it's now almost a joke. Bill Cullen's gotta be rolling over in his grave.

  • They also took away Body Language.

But they still air Now You See It and Hall's Beat the Clock.

And they should bring them back... just you wait...

  • I never really cared for Body Language, or Now You See It...but I like Monty's BTC. I still wish GSN would bring back Double Dare as well as the B&W Allen Ludden Password; Bud Collyer's BTC/TTTT and several others.

  • Well you will get your wish with one of your shows. Allen Ludden's B/W Password comes back on March 30 at 3 a.m.

  • Thanks for the head's-up on that...I'll be looking forward to it. :-)

  • But it will be replacing Collyer's To Tell the Truth.

  • Yep, aware of that...must have typed my previous MSG before I found that TTTT was on overnites, which is now replaced with the early 70's color version of Ludden's Password. I like it, but was still hoping GSN would bring back the B&W version that had his widow Betty White often as a celeb player.

  • Wait a minute... early '70s??? Was that the rare ABC version?

  • Me thinks so...yesterday's run had one of the female stars from the Beverly Hillbillies, as well as Frank Sutton (Gomer Pyle sergeant)...the show before that had a cast member from "Family Affair." Sure seems like the early '70's version to me...it's shown in color and the intro shows the audience clapping, which was a kinda new thing for that era lol (the B&W versions to my knowledge never showed the studio audience)

  • Actually, I've done a little 'search...I knew the Hillbillies & Fam. Affair ran in the late60's-early70's, but USMC ended its run in 1969, so therefore the PW shown on GSN is NOT the rare early '70's ABC, but rather a latish 60's version..not much difference though lol

  • The Password currently airing on GSN in the overnight hours is from the prime time CBS run from around 64'-67'

The ABC run minus the Brett Sommers episode and 75' finale are all believed to have been erased and used with Dawson's episodes of Family Feud.

  • Thanks for the info...seems like I read somewhere awhile back that a lot of the ABC PW run was erased but didn't know if maybe a few eps were saved for reruns by GSN. Makes sense that the CBS run is on GSN since Ludden tells viewers to watch Beverly Hillbillies (some cast members were on PW), and of course Hillbillies ran on CBS back then...no point to promote another network's show lol ;-)

  • POKER, SCHMOKER!!!!

  • This is Double Dare? Where's all the slime and the intense craziness?

  • This is not the Nickelodeon Version of the show. This was an actual Game Show, televised by CBS back in 1977, long before anyone ever knew what Nickelodeon was.

  • The Last Clue was a Dead Giveaway. No wonder why The Spoilers won that round. If all 3 Spoilers would have been available to answer that question, ALL 3 OF THEM WOULD HAVE SWEPT THROUGH THAT WON!

Just the name "Mahatma" said it all!

Could he not have passed on that Clue as well?

  • I saw one time when all 3 did sweep...

  • Really? Would you happen to know the Clue the Spoilers had given to them, and what the Answer was to that Round?

  • The clue had something to do with an interesting fact on where this guy wrote the Jungle Book, so the answer must've been the book's author.

  • Another time that happened, all 3 spoilers swept the C.I.A. answer on the clue "With the aid of a Howard Hughes salvage ship, this organization reportedly recovered part of a soviet submarine."

  • Alan Lusher was quite a character on the show, but he was a smart guy. i was watching double dare last night at one in the morning. it's a pretty good show.

  • You don't happen to have those 2 ep.s?

I goofed up on my timer-recording programming, and I was willing to catch every ep. for trading purposes.

  • GSN aired this last week!

  • Also, the entire ep. has been posted.

  • They're more appropriate for TPIR, though...if you listen closely, the first four notes are a variation on the TPIR theme.

  • O__O;

Has anyone realized that the music for this is the same as the OP for Card Sharks?

  • Look closely at 2:28 -- you can see someone running from the right side of the contestant booths. Any idea who that might be?

  • stage hand?

  • The door reveal was heard on many game shows. It was heard on ``Joker's Wild'' ``Tic Tac Dough.''

  • i like the sound that the opening doors make!!!! ^_^

  • Ilove gsn.

  • OMFG they use the same losing horns as the price is right too????!!!!! sorry lol this is way too funny. Plus mr trebek is lookin kinda funny in all tht 70's hair and stache LOL

  • Well, Price and Double dare were MG-BT productionS!

  • omfg, they use the same theme song as card sharks?????? WTF??? lol thats funny. i guess the show must have been made by the same people who made card sharks. try and look for it sometime im serious LOL

  • Dont the clues seem like they could be used on jeopardy?

  • yeah. excecpt alex dosent use the pronouncations he does on jeopardy! which i find weird

  • Well, in 1976, he wasnt hosting Jeopardy!

  • The show that "Double Dare" (CBS) and "Card Sharks" (NBC) had in common was "The Price Is Right" because of the losing horns.

  • they also were in common because their both MG-BT productions

  • Right. Of course, MG-BT productions eventually folded and now Fremantle owns the former MG shows, such as TPIR, Family Feud.

Also, interesting how your name is secondchance1977...did you call yourself that, after the 1977 game show of that title, which ended up being remade in the 80's as "Press Your Luck?" (Both shows were made by the same company methinks)

  • I think MG-BT ended cause first todman died, and once Goodson died, there was really no one to handle the company, and goodsons son was busy with his on production, Johnathan Goodson productions. And on my username, "THE WORLD MAY NEVER KNOW":)

  • There was always a buzzer toward the end of "Double Dare" which wasn't used on the Jim Perry era of "Card Sharks"

  • that sound near the end at 5:28 was used on card sharks and the price is right as the losing horn

  • A dare situation. Don't you Double Dare go away!

  • The obstical course is next, so don't you Double Dare go away!

    Differend Double Dare, same phrase

  • My dad was working at "Jeopardy!" when Alan Lusher was dubbed Al on Mark Leinwand's 2nd game. The Final Jeopardy! category was Science and he was the one who didn't phrase Helium in a form of a question.

  • Those losing horns are used on "The Price Is Right."

  • So is that clue revealing sound, in the Penny Ante game.

  • Not the clue revealing sound in Penny Ante the buzzer where a commercial break is taken and when they come back from it, there is not enough time to continue with "Double Dare."

  • The sound of selecting a price in Penny Ante is used in this show.

  • and don't forget about The Joker's Wild during the syndicate run on Face the Devil as well as the Jump-ins on The New Tic Tac Dough during its 9 week run on CBS.

  • and card sharks

  • Look at that lady's hair @ 1:20!!! They should just put her out of her misery!

  • Horrible hairstyle. It was the style back then though. Some woman wore it better than others.

  • Still horrible no matter what though.

  • I grew up in the 70's and never heard of this game show, must have been short lived. Is it true that Alex Trebek was a contestant, before coming a game show host? on oneof the

  • Yeah. He was on the Price Is Right. He was such a charasmic contestant that Bob Barker and Mark Goodson talked to him after the show and got him this gig.

  • It was short lived. It only lasted 4 months.

  • GSN should bring back "Joker's Wild", "Hot Potato", "Bullseye", "Name That Tune", and "Play the Percentages", cause I grew up watching those classic game shows!!!!!

  • Great show with the theme to "Card Sharks."

  • Yeah, in fact, the opening here is very similar to the original Card Sharks opening.

  • Not only they used the "Card Sharks" theme and opening, but the sound cue from Penny Ante on TPIR and the Face the Devil wheel on "The Joker's Wild."

  • The Card Sharks theme during the Perry era was originally used here.

  • Yea I had Time Warner, then Comcast took over;;shrugs;;; I'm with you, if it was up

to me, I'd pick the channels i want.

  • Well, my folks thougt they would like it more...but, they don't as much, they may go back to cable..btw..believe it or no, I hace comcast & they don't carry it! Can you believe it?? I'm in Shreveport, Louisian btw.

  • I'm in South Florida...and Comcast here has it on the diggy tier. I would *think* they offer it in Louisiana, if you desire it (up to you of course). Time-Warner in my former state of NC also offers GSN on digital. Of course 'tis a shame you can't cherry-pick the channels you do want and NOT have to pay for the entire package of those you don't care to watch! I dare say I virtually ignore about 90% of my lineup just to get such gems as GSN and music choice and HD locals LOL. Good night. ;-)

  • I wish cable would HAVE GSN..my parent's have Direct so i watch when I go over there.

  • I have Comcast digital cable which carries GSN..most cable systems carry it on their digital tier, not on analog (usually). Of course, it costs more but worth it, sometimes LOL

Also, nothing against your folks but why do they have DirecTV? It's cheaper yes but my mom had it a few years ago and quickly dropped it due to so-ooo many "issues" with signal fade whenever the weather didn't cooperate. I used to think satellite was better but now cable offers so much more and lot fewer outages. ;-)

  • On Time Warner in central NC, you have to get eight or nine crummy sports channels in a package to get GSN. And my Dad, who pays the cable bill, hates game shows, so no dice. I do get to see it at my grandparents' house, where they have satellite.

  • That's hard to say, Bob i always liked..but, Jim was, as you say, more down to earth.

  • I just wish GSN would bring back Sale of the Century and drop some of these stinking poker games or whatever other pointless crapola...Jim Perry would be proud. ;-)

  • AHH! Yes, Card Sharks I knew I could hear it in my head. I remember when Jim & Bob both hosted the show!

  • Which host did you like better on Sharks? I always liked Perry better, but Bob wasn't too bad though he could be a little cocky at times LOL Perry was very down-to-earth.

  • I think that raffetty(is that how it is spelled?) was a good host, though everyone else thinks he didnt do a good job

  • Where have i heard this theme besides this show? It sounds SO familliar.

  • It was played at the intro of "Card Sharks", which was initially hosted by Jim Perry ("Sale of the Century")...Bob Eubanks hosted "Sharks" after Perry left, but the theme was changed.

  • Alan Lusher always stumped the gentlemen but not the woman.

  • Strange that CBS games had $25,000 limits, Double Dare followed ABC's $20,000 rule.

Alan Lusher was the Ken Jennings of Double Dare.

Favorite quip; "I think Dr. Wallace is striking a blow for women's lib." (When Alan couldn't stump Spoiler Dr. Sally Wallace).

  • Are you watching Ray Winston right now? If you're not, he has been trying to win the $5,000 with the spoilers but the highest he has ever gotten was $700, his lowest was $0. He won $0 in his very first game because all 3 spoilers knew about the C.I.A. on the very first clue he had to give.

  • I wonder how long it took Trebek to do his fro back then?

  • The "YOU LOSE" sad trombone sound from The Price is Right. I know it's all from Mark Goodson, but couldn't most of each of these game show have their own unique sound effects?

  • Many Mark Goodson shows on the same network shared the same sound effects. It was a trait of his dating from the early 1960's. I can think of three--the bonus bell from the original Price is Right was the same as the win bell on Play Your Hunch. When the Match Game in the 60's came about, the "Ship's Bell" win bell from The Match Game was used on no less than FOUR different GT shows from that era!

  • plus card sharks

  • Also, the clue reveal cue music was used in Price is Right's retired Penny Ante game when Bob would press the price button connected to the product a contestant has chosen (I believe the game was retired because the game board malfunctioned so often).

  • The clue was: Her husband once called her his "Unguided Missle" and that was the clue to where Alan Lusher buzzed in and guessed Margaret Mitchell. The audience applauded but unfortunately the bell got cut off when Alex said "No that is incorrect, that is incorrect, we close your door and we bring Chuck back." The penalty clue was: Next to her high school yearbook picture were the lines, "I love to wind my tongue up and I love to let it go."

  • Trebek was the host of Double Dare (Not the Double Dare from Nickelodeon.) before he became host of Jeopardy!. Interesting.

  • Alex hosted several other shows before Jeopardy! There was the Wizard of Odds, High Rollers, The $128,000 Question, Battlestars, Pitfall, and even after he started Jeopardy!, there was also Classic Concentration and To Tell The Truth.

  • "Double Dare" was Alex Trebek's only CBS game show, not counting game shows he hosted in his native Canada. Also, Trebek's only ABC game show was "Super Jeopardy!", which ran for thirteen weeks as a tournament.

  • The subject was a person and there was a clue where Alan buzzed and said Margaret Mitchell. The audience was applauding and got a ding but that was a mistake because Alex Trebek said "No that is incorrect, that is incorrect, we close your door and bring back Chuck." The next clue was "Next to her high school yearbook picture were the lines, "I love to wind my tounge up and I love to let it go."

  • This show deserved better than it got from CBS and several affiliates which didn't clear it (including one I had at the time). It's a first-rate format that is not flawed in any way, despite Maxene Fabe's comment in the book TV Game Shows that the isolation booths and "cold fish" host Trebek doomed it. Bring this one back!

  • Alan Lusher won the most possible games you can win. That's Double Dare History.

  • "Double Dare" (not the Nickelodeon version) uses the theme song which was later used for another game show "Card Sharks" with Jim Perry.

  • Why?

  • why not?

  • I'll tell you why: It just fit both shows. A lot of people know this show for using the same theme as the more famous Card Sharks. So, I'm guessing Goodson-Todman decided to reuse the theme.

  • That's a hair inaccurate, because Double Dare was over before Card Sharks started.

  • How is that inaccurate?

  • I'm reading the statement to say something it doesn't. I won't waste your time on it.

  • What?

  • theres a guy running across the stage at 2:28 isnt that funny

  • Which is better: The gameplay, the bonus round, both, or neither?

  • Both. The question is, if they had the sense to bring this back, would they change the name?

  • Probably not. This show didn't last long because it wasn't that fun for most of the viewers.

  • Well, I think it's pretty cool. Just shows how weird I am. Maybe they can use the Spoilers concept somewhere else.

  • Alan Lusher was one of Double Dare's biggest winners if I'm not mistaken, he won a good deal of games.

  • He was the all-time winner here

  • Which verison is better: Alex Trebek or Marc Sommers?

  • dude. Marc Summers. But this version is highly respectable
