The whole campaign finance/endorsement thing is a bit fishy, but I will say - Full Sail can be a great school. I graduated from there in 2009 in the video game development program ("What's that?" - how out of touch are these guys?). I had a job in the industry in forty-eight hours. I'm living the dream I've had since I was twelve and I never would have made it without Full Sail. At least half of the video game studio I work at is made up of Full Sail graduates.
I went to community college & I can say the teachers cared about how I did, always made time for when I needed help, were passionate about their work, & were not just in it for the money. Plus, they provided me with a lot of work & volunteer experience. Two years there cost ~$10,000 maybe. And I qualified for Pell grant, so I don't have to pay anything back except what I accrue at the university to which I transferred. :)
there was a special on FRONTLINE on PBS about for profit colleges and how they prey out for veterans GI bill and it's a total ripoff... what you guys say is hitting the nail right on the head...
@Midas617 Full Sail grad here and a vet. Used the GI bill while I was in school. Forty-eight hours after graduation I had a job in the videogame industry. A fellow Army vet graduated from there with a Game Art degree and works at the same studio as me. Half of the game studio I work at are Full Sail grads. In my graduating class both the valedictorian and salutatorian were Army vets, and we both have good jobs in the videogame/simulations industry.

LOL $81,000 for video game design!! ridiculous. $20,000 here you get a specialized education at a specialized school just on this subject. Some of the teachers work at EA on a regular basis. EA recruits all the time from this school. Electronic Arts!! one of the top companies in the industry.
ok i'm a gamer and i'm not insulted. Everyone knows that there is a hierarchy in terms of diplomas. Ivy League -> Top Schools -> Average Schools -> Community College -> For Profit College. In an industry like the gaming and graphical design, there are way more applicants than spots. Who in the right mind would pick a student from Everest College over a student from UPenn or even Harvard? Lets be real here, nursing i understand since they need every nurse they can get, but gaming?
Ana, you went to school for Political Science or something like that right? That degree program has to be one of the biggest waste of money... where would that degree take you honestly? I have friends with degrees like that and they are not anywhere with it.
You could've been a newscaster on TYT without that degree... skill based stuff like game programming require, well, SKILL! I agree that skill can be learned alone, but seriously it's more reputable than your degree... it's a skill.
I thought you were suppose to be a Gamer Ana how come you don't know what Video Game Design is ? you better say sorry before Gamefly stops sponsoring TYT. btw I don't care if you don't play I just hating Liars...!
If you want to make fun of video game art, try making your own game. You can download a game engine for free (unity3d or tourge or unreal or whatever). See how far you get without concept designs, 3d models, character rigs, level designs, texture maps, etc. Video game art is a real job and right out of school pays better than doing scientific research or becoming a teacher. It probably pays better than what Ana makes at TYT. Of course, you absolutely do NOT have to go to a private college.
Ana and Cenk, I understand the common misconceptions about video games, but please, research the topic. Video games are an officially recognized form of art, have beautiful imagery, story, and it's like playing a movie or book. Game development is a serious career
Furthermore, in the videogame industry people do NOT need to go work for Blizzard or Square. Unlike in many other industries, when it comes to making games you can make a game, put it up on steam, send a demo to a couple of prominent game journalists, and hope people like it. Most people who finish Fullsail (or any game design program) become self-sustaining indie developers or start their own studios. Also, the reason only 30% of people complete Fullsail is because it's a fucking hard program.
Ana, videogame art programs focus on character design, level design, environment creation, script writing, all the cool shit that make games like Mass Effect and Bioshock. You're right that the industry doesn't hire people who go to fullsail - it looks to hire people who know how to make games, and one alternative of learning to make games is going to Fullsail. Of course, the MIT Game Design program is cheaper, but Fullsail is actually better. It's one of the FEW for profit unis that are good.
I actually looked at going into the video game industry, and I even looked at Full Sail. The problem I saw with them is that basically you're in class for 40 hours a week, which, if you're getting a second bachelors, doesn't allow you to work while earning your degree. If I were to have pursued my education further, I would have gone to University of Advancing Technology instead, as they have an online program, so I wouldn't have had to relocate, and I could still work and take classes.
Of course Republicans love to advocate anything that diminishes the quality of education, such as promoting these diploma mills, like Full Sail University or the University of Phoenix. After all, if students were actually educated and well rounded, they would not fall for all the BS that the Republican Party peddles. A future population of well educated students would spell the demise of the Republican Party.
FYI: The gaming industry is fucking HUGE (COD, BF, Starcraft, all MMO's etc. exceed most movies). So responding to "video game art" as "wtf is that" (I don't blame you for not knowing, but it had a very negative tone to it) is perhaps a bad idea.
HAVING SAID THAT, paying 81.000$ is of course insanely expensive.
@ZiqqiPH I can't think of a more bull shit private college sounding course than "Video Game Art". You're just flipping your shit because it has the words "video game" in it and you jizz all over your xBox. Nobody is insulting any industries, just pointing out that the course sounds like horse shit.
@ZiqqiPH Seriously, people who get degrees in 'game design' is completely bogus. Either get a degree in computer science or digital design. I live with someone with a degree in game design, and I, as a self-taught programmer, have had more commercial success on my free-time. I also work as a full-time developer(not games) and they don't look for people who have 'kinda coded and kinda did art', they parse you into very specific roles in the industry.
@rorrt Fail. While the video game industry may be one that made a lot of money, it ISN'T an industry known to employ to any interesting degree. Even when the industry seems to be succeeding. I know it makes you want to cry because you love games so much, but this isn't a game. This is a reality, son.
Im not that interested in games to actually make them.
But the real point is the value of video games, to Britain they make more money than the British film industry...I know what you might say "Oh but the British film industry is tiny!!! UUUGHH!!! YOU IDIOT!!!"... It isnt, the British film industry is massive, drawing multimillion blockbuster films every summer. The Kings Speech, Slumdog Millionaire to name 2.
Anyways...Games make a lot of monies! Especially in Britain.
@rorrt I don't doubt that in the least. The industry makes tons of money as you say. They just aren't hiring proportionate to many other industries of the same size.
I dunno, I think it depends on the placement, and the country.
I mean there are so many indie games developers popping up, and a great thing about a lot of universities doing games design, they have great contacts in the industry.
But i see what you mean that they arent hiring as much as other industries.
OUR PROBLEM: Old people are conditioned to GovernMental FCC controlled TV(lame stream media), what they are feed/FED they have to eat, mainly war propaganda. Young people the informative internet leavening it up to young Americans to educate our elders how the biased media SELECT’s there next Pimp I mean president for them. A clear indication is if they can tell you who is unelectable before people even vote they can tell you who’s your next PIMP, Wake up, Americas under siege !
Excellent, excellent reporting Ana. The information for young kids going to college, how to avoid the scam artist, etc is invaluable to them and their parents. My daughter was guided by friends who had been there. They came from very affluent backgrounds, this in itself was exactly why their education was not as expensive and my daughter ended up in very little debt thanks to their guidance.
The best way to avoid scams like that video game art program is to be interested in knowledge not careers. If a program promises to give you a career, it's lying. Even medicine could be used in multiple fields. It's about what you know, not what program you went through.
What percentage of kids flunk at for-profit institutions? I bet you it's lower than public institutions. "Oh! they are paying us money! We can't fail them!"
@NeccoWecco The general help from the state (called BAföG) gets you up to 650€ a month depending on the income of your parents and you can do jobs for up to 400€ extra a month, like many great jobs the universities themselves offer, so that would be 1050€. If you don't live at home (with your parents etc.) you get additional help.
I still am not understanding how this is drastically different than the activities of "normal" universities. A lot of public and private university students take out enormous amounts of debt that they will paying on for the rest of their lives. My older high school teachers often noted that they were still paying off their student loans. I don't think advocates of "traditional" universities can really talk until their own institutions bring down their price tags and deliver on their promises.
it figures that mitt romney would be paid off by the for profit colleges and this is so fucked up stupity for profit colleges dont even give you a job
@kazooga1234 off course, politics beyond reason but through persuasion. social engineering gone wrong. this could be our next president?; no way! we need a person who represents a population of differences not a person of stupidity.
I remember a few years back I showed a little bit of interest in Full Sail University. They emailed and called me nonstop for two years. Along with that I kept gettinig stuff in the mail from them. After tuning into TYT and learning about for profit colleges and how they work, I'm glad I never enrolled. All I can say is thank you TYT, and I make it my mission to spread the word, especially amongst my fellow service members.
@will786 i never got emails like that i use gmail and if i ever did i would have typed back fuck you because i hate colleges that email it means they are trying to do a scam and make you feel specail when you arent
I have to say that my experience with Westwood College (a for profit) was horrible in every sense. Luckily I only took the ride for a short time and got out when something smelled fishy. The education was a joke that I felt was catering to the lowest common denominator and I know at my school we had a convicted felon posing as an ex-cop teaching criminal justice who wore a gun to class everyday. The lies recruiters tell are atrocious, and the lending practices are predatory at best.
You dont need a degree in video game design you can actually learn this stuff on your own. Look around and download free game engines and 3D software. In general, most 3D software have the same functions and virtually the same.
@DynamicMotionsHD I agree... people apparently don't understand that skill set based stuff, like video game programming, graphic design, etc can be learned on your own without a school. It is better usually to get some sort of degree for your skill to get yourself ahead in the job market, but it is not necessary.
The famed video game Counter-Strike was purely born from modders without any degree or professional background. Valve, the game developers, hired them for that modded game. BAM!
@DynamicMotionsHD Learn Maya, photoshop, site layout and take a class in userability that gives you a certificate that says you completed the course and you can get a job in many different companies.
i make 15k a year. these 2 people gave mitt romney more money then i will make in 3 years. i wonder whats the minimum money i would need to buy a politician. or maybe i could declare my apartment as a For-Profit College
Sigh. Ana, it depends on the particular college for quality of education. There are good for profit colleges, there are good public ones, there are good private nonprofits (*cough* MIT), there are also bad ones from each category. This constant "for profit colleges are evil!" bashing is counterproductive. 38% graduating means it's actually -hard- instead of the pansy shit most public schools have. Also I'm sure you know who the gaming industry is after since you're an underground gamer, right?
@DeJach The problem is that the ones that are the most profitable usually are the ones who are increasing the short term profits at the cost of long term viability, that is, investing massive amounts of money in sales, and skimping on the actual education. The result is, that they collapse, but that is fine as far as the executives are concerned, because they made their money and can start up another.
@dangerouslytalented They can try to start up another but that trick doesn't usually work more than once. It's rare when it does. It's also clear to anyone who can do math that the most profitable ones are the ones that align their interests with their students and the interests of the industry if they're also trying to help the students get jobs. For some it's worth it to get $100 now instead of $1000 in a week, they're irrational and I doubt represent most for-profits.
@DeJach Actually, no, because all the college has to do is make money during the first couple of years, more money than it loses, and when business gets to the point where it is no longer profitable, when it gets the bad reputation it deserves, they close down quietly, and then get a new name, and start up again, same tactics. I have seen exactly the same people close down and reopen over and over again, decieving a new crop of students each and every time.
@Ghostrider98745 I have studied computer games design in a public institution, and some of the people I went there with had studied in a private institution.
The few that finished their studies at the private institution could not find work in the real world because of the atrocious reputation that particular private institution had.
@Ghostrider98745 I don't think they meant to insult, having been at a school with a video game program, I used to hear the lies these kids were told. It's kind of like being 5'1" and the recruiter tells you "OH so you like watching basketball on TV? Well, if you come to school with us we will GUARANTEE that when you graduate you WILL play in the NBA." In the end you graduate with massive debt, a useless diploma, and a crushed dream. These people don't care about your future, just money.
@Ghostrider98745 How? I've been a "gamer" my whole life, western game design is 99% bald space marine games with boring brown environments and brownish black guns with run of the mill FPS/TPS gameplay. I'm not saying I'm against FPS/TPS, but I am against people getting ripped off and lack of innovation. For profit game design schools contain both of those things. I've been to a for profit, trade school, and community college and by far the community college was best bang 4 buck.
@1yearyounger Very true. I play a lot of video games and was not insulted at all. If "gamers" are insulted by this video, they are clearly focusing on the wrong things. Ana doesn't know about the video game major (or whatever it's called), so what??
@Ghostrider98745 I haven't looked at the stats, but when Ana said that video game companies aren't looking for people with these diplomas I am betting bottom dollar that is a very correct statement.
@dangerouslytalented We still don't know much about medicine. Evidence-based medicine is still new and quite controversial. (Especially when you talk to certain surgeons...) It remains a field that favors memorization over all else. It's particularly suited for computer take-over.
@nawstra578 Nah you need knowledge of 3dsMax, Maya and a massive number of other programs. Having some formal education is a good start, a good basis to THEN start practising.
when i graduated the school i went to was mainly an art school, they had animation, and as i graduated disney was investing in that school, helping to build a new facility, why? b/c so many of their artists came from that school, and it was just, what americans refer to, as a community college!!
I go to the Institute Of Production & Recording in Minneapolis, Mn and yes it is a for profit college and yes the graduation rate is down for schools like fullsail and IPR but the truth why the numbers are that way is because kids go into the schools and think it is "Rock and roll high school" and think it is going to be a breeze but they discover it is real work and so they drop out or just slack off and fail classes so they do not graduate on time.
also also, fullsail schedules are compacted more than any other college I can think of so not graduating on time doesn't make it explicitly taking any longer than a public school.
I would have to argue that Fullsail, at least for the quality of education and connections they boast, is a bit of an exception compared to other for profit colleges.
@MultiUniv3rsal By its very definition, for-profit schools are operated by private businesses. Some major universities are private but are funded by non-profit organizations. However, there are some private universities that are for-profit. Usually I tell the difference when I see schools advertising on TV, newspapers, billboards, etc. That's at least how I know those are for-profit schools.
Dis the college, not people who study video game creation. The gaming and entertainment industries have done much better during the recession than has the rest of the economy.

I know it makes you want to cry because you love games so much, but this isn't a game. This is a reality, son.
SeriouslyPissedOff 1 month ago
@SeriouslyPissedOff
Especially in Britain.
rorrt 1 month ago
@rorrt I don't doubt that in the least. The industry makes tons of money as you say. They just aren't hiring proportionate to many other industries of the same size.
SeriouslyPissedOff 1 month ago
@SeriouslyPissedOff
I dunno, I think it depends on the placement, and the country.
I mean there are so many indie games developers popping up, and a great thing about a lot of universities doing games design, they have great contacts in the industry.
But i see what you mean that they arent hiring as much as other industries.

"For profit" Is something I thought EVERYONE would understand!
It always means "we give you less for more"
Just like all the big stores.
Less price, less customer service and less co operation.
Also it has the word "profit" in it. Really surprised he supports for profit?
Clanki 1 month ago
The best way to avoid scams like that video game art program is to be interested in knowledge not careers. If a program promises to give you a career, it's lying. Even medicine could be used in multiple fields. It's about what you know, not what program you went through.

@d2kx Ya but as a student you can't work, no?
NeccoWecco 1 month ago

I just save you guys thousands of dollar.
DynamicMotionsHD 1 month ago 15
@DynamicMotionsHD I agree... people apparently don't understand that skill set based stuff, like video game programming, graphic design, etc can be learned on your own without a school. It is better usually to get some sort of degree for your skill to get yourself ahead in the job market, but it is not necessary.
The famed video game Counter-Strike was purely born from modders without any degree or professional background. Valve, the game developers, hired them for that modded game. BAM!

DeJach 1 month ago
@DeJach The problem is that the ones that are the most profitable usually are the ones who are increasing the short term profits at the cost of long term viability, that is, investing massive amounts of money in sales, and skimping on the actual education. The result is, that they collapse, but that is fine as far as the executives are concerned, because they made their money and can start up another.
dangerouslytalented 1 month ago
@dangerouslytalented They can try to start up another but that trick doesn't usually work more than once. It's rare when it does. It's also clear to anyone who can do math that the most profitable ones are the ones that align their interests with their students and the interests of the industry if they're also trying to help the students get jobs. For some it's worth it to get $100 now instead of $1000 in a week, they're irrational and I doubt represent most for-profits.
DeJach 1 month ago
@DeJach Actually, no, because all the college has to do is make money during the first couple of years, more money than it loses, and when business gets to the point where it is no longer profitable, when it gets the bad reputation it deserves, they close down quietly, and then get a new name, and start up again, same tactics. I have seen exactly the same people close down and reopen over and over again, decieving a new crop of students each and every time.

Ghostrider98745 1 month ago 14
@Ghostrider98745 I have studied computer games design in a public institution, and some of the people I went there with had studied in a private institution.
The few that finished their studies at the private institution could not find work in the real world because of the atrocious reputation that particular private institution had.
dangerouslytalented 1 month ago
@Ghostrider98745 I don't think they meant to insult, having been at a school with a video game program, I used to hear the lies these kids were told. It's kind of like being 5'1" and the recruiter tells you "OH so you like watching basketball on TV? Well, if you come to school with us we will GUARANTEE that when you graduate you WILL play in the NBA." In the end you graduate with massive debt, a useless diploma, and a crushed dream. These people don't care about your future, just money.
neversawthatcoming 1 month ago 42
@Ghostrider98745 How? I've been a "gamer" my whole life, western game design is 99% bald space marine games with boring brown environments and brownish black guns with run of the mill FPS/TPS gameplay. I'm not saying I'm against FPS/TPS, but I am against people getting ripped off and lack of innovation. For profit game design schools contain both of those things. I've been to a for profit, trade school, and community college and by far the community college was best bang 4 buck.

when i graduated the school i went to was mainly an art school, they had animation, and as i graduated disney was investing in that school, helping to build a new facility, why? b/c so many of their artists came from that school, and it was just, what americans refer to, as a community college!!
chillytoes1 1 month ago
I go to the Institute Of Production & Recording in Minneapolis, Mn and yes it is a for profit college and yes the graduation rate is down for schools like fullsail and IPR but the truth why the numbers are that way is because kids go into the schools and think it is "Rock and roll high school" and think it is going to be a breeze but they discover it is real work and so they drop out or just slack off and fail classes so they do not graduate on time.
fatguydrummer 1 month ago
also also, fullsail schedules are compacted more than any other college I can think of so not graduating on time doesn't make it explicitly taking any longer than a public school.
inademv 1 month ago
and the video game art program is a graphic design program, same as most of what fullsail does.
