This is the song sung by a man named Charles Hall who in the US Air Force during the 1960's and stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.
He dealt with with Tall White (aliens from outer space who use Nellis as a way station). They have an intimidating manner which would threaten others. How Charles would cope is singing this song to himself and "pray a lot" (his words).
interesting to point out how classy the artists of the 50's and 60's dressed; suit and tie. You would NEVER see Lady GaGa dress professionally, let alone be able to have the talent Ricky and the other artists back then had. A true shame.
Hey all, just thought I'd share my memories of Ricky Nelson's music. I'm 21, so it's not like I was around then, but my dad (who would be 59 now) had a CD of his greatest hits. I loved listening to his music. (still do) I was in middle school I think by that time. I asked my dad about who he was and he told me a little bit about him, then he got me watching Ozzie & Harriet with him. I consider myself a die-hard Beatles fan, but that also means that I love great music. :)
@JohnPaulSaylor .John Paul you have restored my faith in the future of music. As long as there people like you who appreciate what great music was around in the early sixties
I recall the songs from the early 60s era so well too. I was 16 and had just fell in love and during that intensely emotional time tracks like this and "Say Hello Mary Lou" also by Ricky Nelson, and another in particular- "Runaway" by Del Shannon, burned into my teenage emotions. At such times songs are suddenly meaningful and personal. Roy Orbison also used to tear me up with "Runnin' Scared". It was so ghastly that Rick Nelson died in that plane crash like that.
What is it about this music which touches so deeply? The simple romantic melodies, and innoncent sensuality may help explain it to a degree. I am now 48 and was only a toddler when this song was already a few years old, but can still remember it playing on the car radio in the mid-60's. And now in mature adulthood it evokes such powerful images. Was there a moment in the past 45-5o years when we passed a musical point of no return?
@jeff62rey Thanks for the insightful comment. You've a good memory, I'm a year older than you and remember very little from that time - it just wasn't played in our house. A perfect song. Rick's version of 'Down Home' touches me even more than this one.
@SirBasildeBrush Thankyou for the reference to "Down Home," which I had never heard, but which allowed the mule of emotional memories to kick me in the gut. That phrase, "Down home," was one always used when referencing a trip to my Grandma and Grandpa's farm. They died within the last 7 years and the memories tinged with grief are still quite fresh for me.
@jeff62rey So very well put. I had 4 older brothers and these songs were constantly playing in my childhood home and today they are more precious to me than back then. It saddens me because they are not being replaced with anything better these days. It's like today there is a vacumn in talent.
@sapphiretaurus No, I did some serious record collecting during the British Invasion. However, releases like this one were far and few between during the British Invasion. I found out that around 1967 or so I went back to the music from 1957 - 1964. The Searchers, Dave Clark Five, etc, were all great. Ronnie
awsome song!! My fiance likes it soo much too, that he is going to sing this song to me at our wedding in a few weeks!! TY for posting such a great song from Ricky, keep posting some of the greats from this man!!!!
Aaahhhhhh.....I could listen to this song 24/7! AND......I agree with 8dakota6 about the horns and bass! The horns really make this hit a solid knockout! Thanks again for posting this Basil!
Sir Basil......I forgot how outstanding the horns and bass were on this cut. I think, aside from Ricks great voice, the horns really make this hit a solid knockout!!
Great piece of rock for my enjoyment. Thank You. Rick was a class act and a real gentleman. I grew upin the 50's and 60's and am so happy I got to experience all of this great music by endless wonderful artists!!!! Sorry, but the music these days is crap! Thank God for recordings!
when I type, it's up to you, this stereo version does not come up on the list unless I type [stereo[. I believe a lot of perple miss this one because of that..
Great stereo version of this song. Can you get your hands on Young World & post it this way too? Strangely enough,I don't see it posted at all & it was a big hit for Ricky.

A true singer who represented a totally different time and mindset on music.
Clean cut, a true gentleman, never disrespected women or his audiences, didn't need to make negative headlines nor curse and swear to sell a record.
Yeah Rick you were, are and will remain a class act.
Nice one SirBasil
