double tracking is fun and makes the learning process more exciting, so you should definitely try it.

you can use Adobe Audition, Reaper or any other program. I'm using Reaper 0.9, which is free. You can search for it on web (mine is virus-infected).

Anyway, the most important things you should are: practice a lot, experiment a lot, and record yourself a lot to hear what you really sound like.

the most impact to my voice was Metallica old stuff which i've listened to and sung along to when i was like 12 to 18. i think my main singing voice has been established by the age of 18. after that i wasn't singing too much. i never took any classes, never had stage performances, only sung among friends with my guitar.

however, recently (a year ago) i decided to try recording myself singing, and it was awful! ways worse than i expected! there where good points, but overall it wasn't rythmic enough, powerful enough, expressive enough. i turned out to sing way worse that i've imagined myself to.

so i decided to work on my vocals more professionally. i spent whole spring/summer 2009 doing vocal covers, which helped a lot. now i'm taking classical vocal lessons and sing in a band, improving permanently.

another point i should mention: screaming.

screaming is my dream and my weak point. i try hard to learn fry screaming, but i can't, for half a year now. th progress is very slow. the high-screams you hear in my covers are actually cheating: i'm double and sometimes triple-tracking myself so screams sound more powerful. in reality they sound weak.

the recent video, slipknot cover, shows more what my current screaming is. there are still doubletrackings there at some places.
