Nice ibook! I just got a 14 in ibook g3, 900 mhz, 640 mb ram, and a 40 gig hdd, so I have the fastest ibook g3 you could get. Has airport, too. Im still really into the older, clamshell designs, though.
Geoff, great to see you young folks keeping these alive! You might want to think about an "alternative" OS for your little guy. Like the PowerPC fork of Ubuntu or FreeBSD if you're wanting to get your geek on. I looked up batteries for these on Amazon, you can get an 8 cell for about 30 beans! Good luck! ~ Scott
@tomwest666 Their keyboards have been argued to be the most comfortable and easy to type on design ever! If by design you mean "looks" yea you might be right but design? Poor word choice my friend.
my old elementary school had a bunch of these, and a bunch of old system 7 macs with cd rom drives *looked like the classic*, I have no idea what they did with these bcause they phased em out asap with drives me nuts because I always wanted to get em,
@helenatorr Really? because I have had my latitude for 1 year and it's in the shop. My macbook, which I am using right now, is still being used after 5 years of use, not needing of repair once.
This was the last fun era of Macintosh computers, before Apple catered to clueless douchefags like silenteyesspy who couldn't find their way around a computer if you drew them a fucking map. Granted the iBook has always been an underpowered POS, but I love using mine today as a test computer for different Linux distros since its really not good for much else besides being a cute paper weight, and I already have its bigger, better brother sitting on my desk. Bondi Blue iMac with OS X, mmmmm.
I really wish apple would make newer iBooks similar to the Clamshells. They are gorgeous in my opinion and if I wasn't afraid of one running too slow for my taste I would get one. I kind of want to buy one for the outside casing and build the inside myself... but I have no experience in building computers... maybe I should learn...
Hi! I have the same iBook, but when it boots a flashing finder folder/icon comes up and it does not boot... I cant even get to install another OS, please help?
@MBP6705 I considered a mod like that, but I just couldnt figure out a way to approach it. I considered instead taking a Netbook's insides and working them into a ibook. But the problem is finding a laptop with power and a screen of the same size. :|
@RealEmotionX Plus these used a special kind of keyboard and I don't think a netbook would have a connection for that. That sure would be interesting, "The iBook Atom"
think i should get a torquiest clamshell for really cheap off ebay. Ill still need a new battery, charger, and airport card but it would be fun. seriously i just got a new macbook pro, but these look acctully really cool
@DeLong6994 nope, it came in 5 colors. indigo, blueberry, graphite, tangerine, and key lime. I actually have owned all five at different times. you might be thinking of the g3 imacs
@freeyourmind775: well they actually do how harsher words but seeing as how you're so naive and have a very small vocabulary you don't know of any...and second I love Macs as I've never experienced issues with them as I do with windows...I anathematize windows so much they are such an abomination

Macs are just windows computers with an expensive case. Also, Macs don't get viruses because if they did, all the dumbshits (like you) who use them, would have shit tons.
@BlueVihtic: is it bad if a computer does it all for people? cause I don't see that as a negative...I'd rather have everything simple and get on with my day than have to be confused and worry about virus scans and freezing and crashing...and I'd never compare them to windows as macs are all unique in everyway and that windows always copies them
Windows copies mac? You have to be kidding me right. How dumb are you. If you, or any mac users switched to a PC, you would just fuck it all up because you're used to being babied by a mac. Mac is like a play toy for children because there aren't any consequences, and it doesn't do much.
@BlueVihtic: nope mac was the first computer to actually run like a computer without commands and crashing every 2 seconds...what windows 7 is doing now I was doing back in 2001 with the mac g3..and I use PCs at work so that's pretty pointless of you to say that I wouldn't know what to do..but I always can't wait to get home to my Mac..and see right there about the playing games..I use computers for WORK NOT playing games..that's why I have a PS3 and an Xbox 360..
@silenteyesspy: so windows maybe better for your gaming but it's not for me for my work and you still haven't answered my question about "is it bad if a computer does everything for people" because I don't see that as a negative
@BlueVihtic: actually a lot of that matter cause it shows you were windows would be if it wasn't for the Mac to copy from..and again I'd rather have a simple thing that does everything and not worry about which virus software to install or if a trojan was detected then going through scanning the whole entire computer or putting it into safe mode to get more of an accurate scan..then removing then all..too much time..obviously you like doing that and that's cool but it's NOT for me
Actually, I don't get viruses because I'm computer smart. Even if I got one, I could remove it in 5 seconds unless it was something major. Windows is ten times more customizable and used for more things than mac. That picture got it exactly right. Mac is like a tricycle. It doesn't break, anyone can use it. It's like a child's toy.
@BlueVihtic: the picture is right and if you were to actually read, I specified that "I'd rather have a simple thing that does everything" and you don't get viruses because you have software installed or have windows defender running and that's good that you could remove it in 5 seconds..you might customize your computer but all I really do is just the wallpapers..I could care less about setting start up and shut down tones..again I WORK on my computers, I don't care about the other stuff
You think that customization is just shut down tones and stuff like that. It goes way begone just sounds and pictures. And you did say that you want something simple that does everything. No such thing. At least that isn't a mac.
@BlueVihtic: sure it does, memory, HD, video card etc etc etc...my mac does everything..built in webcam, garage band, Imovie etc etc etc..I photoshop, check my emails my facebook..I watch youtube, cbs, abc..it's synced with my iphone...that's everything to me. so I don't know what you're talking about
Memory doesn't count, HD doesn't count, Video Card definitely doesn't count, Oh wow, a webcam, sick, stock programs. Youtube, facebook, and shows are the internet, not mac. And guess what, you can't break outside those barriers. There is so much more, but you don't realize it because you have a mac.
@BlueVihtic: But what part of "I do everything I want" don't you understand? and everything that I listed are pretty much daily routines, I obviously have Microsoft office and that's how I type out letter and resumes and excel I use often too..that's just my point, I am already doing everything everything I want WITHOUT the extra worry of viruses or if I should buy sony veges studio or just download movie maker because it doesn't come preinstalled etc etc etc
We're not arguing about what's best for you. It's about what the mac is like all together. It might be good for people like you that just do basic things, but when you get more into computers, mac has many boundaries. That's why the picture compared it to a tricycle. It works all of the basic things, but you can't really customize stuff, and when you want to do something outside the boundaries, it won't happen.
@BlueVihtic: ok so what do you customize that "everyone" supposedly does except for the Mac people..cause like I told you I don't have time for customizing things..I don't care about different cases that glow, or about the liquid cooling system that flows through different color pipes etc etc...people just all buy PC because they're cheap..the richer families buy Macs because they have the money..more than half the people that buy PCs only know how to work the basics and it was a cheap buy
You're saying facts that aren't even true. Smart people buy PCs. Chumps that know nothing about computers buy macs. They buy them because they look good. Not because of the specs or anything. And more than half of people that buy PCs only know the basics? Macs customization level is below basics. Even if you facts were true, the over 50% of people would be doing more customization than a mac while not even knowing it.
@BlueVihtic: first off you never explained how you customize it or how everyone that owns a PC customizes it...so I'd like that answered. and I'm going by the majority of people who have PCs..they have them because they are cheap and got the whole desktop for 299, they honestly just check email surf the web and print the occasional letter/resume..and who cares if the Mac customization is low..no one customizes any computer except for those that know exactly what they are doing
I'm not going to sit here and list off the things to customize on a PC. You can find that elsewhere. By the way, where are you getting your facts from. You lie on all these stats you say. The majority of people don't buy PCs because of their price. They buy them because they are a lot more useful than macs, and aren't all about looks. You could buy a PC with the same EXACT statistics as a mac, for half the price. That is completely true. Like I said before, people customize PCs not even knowing.
@BlueVihtic: what not even 2 little things that you can customize on a PC? yeah probably cause you haven't even done it yet..so all these people in their middle age that buy PCs know exactly how to work them and so that's why they need geeksquad and also take in their PCs to get the virus software installed instead of doing it themselves? and people customize PCs without even knowing? how is that exactly?
I have customized my PC over a mac well enough times to realize it. And you keep trying to make it seem like everyone who buys a PC doesn't know anything about computers. That might be it for mac users, but not PC users. People customize PCs without knowing it because if they tried it on a mac, it wouldn't work. Whether they were using a tutorial or not, it's a lot more customizable. And if you buy a Mac and say you won't play games, what about later when you might want to play a game/simulator?

@BlueVihtic People who want good customer service, a computer that isn't hideous, and a UNIX distro that isn't fagged up with X11 buy macs. Deal with it.
@richardmaudsley77 There are Linux distros that aren't that bad like Ubuntu, Debian (it's verrrrry generic though) and Linux Mint. But there is no OS that looks as great and is as functional as the Mac OS.
I also did a video about optimizing a Clamshell to get the best performance. The only thing that I thought I'd change about yours is to update the airport card to a wireless N USB adapter for a faster internet experience and WPA encryption. It is possible to put a 120 Gig hard drive in one of these as long as you have the latest firmware also. Batteries are readily available on line.
getting one soon, I am planing to make it my main school computer as its so portable, as it has that handle, :) and my school is using 15 year old computer's (windozes) XP and there lab got vandlised today and that sucks, as like wtf? but yea,
to give you an idea of it's performance: computer im typing on: 700mhz g4 640 mb ram 5400rpm hdd 32 mb vram discrete im getting about 4 fps on this video and its the same for other videos too. ibook: 300-450 mhz g3 maximum around 600 mb ram( not sure exactly) 4 mb vram, integrated vram. 4200 rpm hdd maybe now you see what i mean? lol
I got a iMac g3 400 and it runs youtube Okay, I suppose. The sound plays fine, but the video ends up out of sinc by about a second or so towards the end. If you download the video and run it in quicktime instead of Flash it's perfect.
I know, I made it sound like they made the PowerBook line because of the kid-ness of the iBook, but I meant to say, thats why they have the PowerBook line.
nice. i'm bidding for 1 on ebay right now!! thumbs up to this video. ( i'm 1 of teh people who liked.)

You think that customization is just shut down tones and stuff like that. It goes way begone just sounds and pictures. And you did say that you want something simple that does everything. No such thing. At least that isn't a mac.
BlueVihtic 1 year ago
@BlueVihtic: sure it does, memory, HD, video card etc etc etc...my mac does everything..built in webcam, garage band, Imovie etc etc etc..I photoshop, check my emails my facebook..I watch youtube, cbs, abc..it's synced with my iphone...that's everything to me. so I don't know what you're talking about
silenteyesspy 1 year ago
Memory doesn't count, HD doesn't count, Video Card definitely doesn't count, Oh wow, a webcam, sick, stock programs. Youtube, facebook, and shows are the internet, not mac. And guess what, you can't break outside those barriers. There is so much more, but you don't realize it because you have a mac.
BlueVihtic 1 year ago
@BlueVihtic: But what part of "I do everything I want" don't you understand? and everything that I listed are pretty much daily routines, I obviously have Microsoft office and that's how I type out letter and resumes and excel I use often too..that's just my point, I am already doing everything everything I want WITHOUT the extra worry of viruses or if I should buy sony veges studio or just download movie maker because it doesn't come preinstalled etc etc etc
silenteyesspy 1 year ago
We're not arguing about what's best for you. It's about what the mac is like all together. It might be good for people like you that just do basic things, but when you get more into computers, mac has many boundaries. That's why the picture compared it to a tricycle. It works all of the basic things, but you can't really customize stuff, and when you want to do something outside the boundaries, it won't happen.

@BlueVihtic: ok so what do you customize that "everyone" supposedly does except for the Mac people..cause like I told you I don't have time for customizing things..I don't care about different cases that glow, or about the liquid cooling system that flows through different color pipes etc etc...people just all buy PC because they're cheap..the richer families buy Macs because they have the money..more than half the people that buy PCs only know how to work the basics and it was a cheap buy
silenteyesspy 1 year ago
You're saying facts that aren't even true. Smart people buy PCs. Chumps that know nothing about computers buy macs. They buy them because they look good. Not because of the specs or anything. And more than half of people that buy PCs only know the basics? Macs customization level is below basics. Even if you facts were true, the over 50% of people would be doing more customization than a mac while not even knowing it.
BlueVihtic 1 year ago
@BlueVihtic: first off you never explained how you customize it or how everyone that owns a PC customizes it...so I'd like that answered. and I'm going by the majority of people who have PCs..they have them because they are cheap and got the whole desktop for 299, they honestly just check email surf the web and print the occasional letter/resume..and who cares if the Mac customization is low..no one customizes any computer except for those that know exactly what they are doing
silenteyesspy 1 year ago
I'm not going to sit here and list off the things to customize on a PC. You can find that elsewhere. By the way, where are you getting your facts from. You lie on all these stats you say. The majority of people don't buy PCs because of their price. They buy them because they are a lot more useful than macs, and aren't all about looks. You could buy a PC with the same EXACT statistics as a mac, for half the price. That is completely true. Like I said before, people customize PCs not even knowing.
BlueVihtic 1 year ago
@BlueVihtic: what not even 2 little things that you can customize on a PC? yeah probably cause you haven't even done it yet..so all these people in their middle age that buy PCs know exactly how to work them and so that's why they need geeksquad and also take in their PCs to get the virus software installed instead of doing it themselves? and people customize PCs without even knowing? how is that exactly?
silenteyesspy 1 year ago

Deal with it.
richardmaudsley77 1 year ago
@richardmaudsley77 There are Linux distros that aren't that bad like Ubuntu, Debian (it's verrrrry generic though) and Linux Mint. But there is no OS that looks as great and is as functional as the Mac OS.

I also did a video about optimizing a Clamshell to get the best performance. The only thing that I thought I'd change about yours is to update the airport card to a wireless N USB adapter for a faster internet experience and WPA encryption. It is possible to put a 120 Gig hard drive in one of these as long as you have the latest firmware also. Batteries are readily available on line.

I know, I made it sound like they made the PowerBook line because of the kid-ness of the iBook, but I meant to say, thats why they have the PowerBook line.

Hey, this is great! Finally, someone my age who knows what he's talking about when it comes to computers!
The clamshell G3 is probably one of my favorite Macs. I've never owned a Mac, so I would like to find one of these on eBay.
That DVD played pretty smoothly - looks like that ATI 3D Rage video card built-in works good.
