Chile's buildings have to respect antiseismic rules and that's why this disaster was not even worse, but we are seeing now that some buildings have not respected those rules.
The reason why there were more deaths in Haiti than Chile is simple. The buildings in Haiti used concrete with a high water-cement ratio, while the buildings in Chile used concrete with a low water-cement ratio. A high water-cement ratio results in concrete that is very weak and susceptible to damage. Because the people in Haiti were living in buildings with such concrete, the entire structures came collapsing on them all, while most Chile buildings remained intact with their stronger concrete.
@MiniverJD Yes, I actually heard that the reason there were so many deaths in Haiti was that "earthquakes don't kill people; buildings kill people." Due to the lack of insitutional memory of earthquakes in Haiti and corrupt building inspectors, as well as the fact that the Haiti earthquake occurred closer to the surface and population centers, the death toll was higher...Thank you for adding your knowledge on why more buildings in Haiti crumbled, leading to a higher death toll...very sad.
because it was deeper in the ground
