A special star in the Vanelli musical firmament, one performed live on this special day in 2002 that perhaps exhibits his multi-layered talents and perspective more than any other. It seems like a simple standard-like jazz ballad. Gino again is “perfect,” or - derisively really - almost extraterrestrial in mien and technique. But to hold to those views alone would be an anxious avoidance from what is really going on here and a pity. So don’t be fooled.

Though he wouldn’t have to mention Whitman explicitly, Vanelli does so unabashedly. Like so much of his work the shimmering fluid surface is only one small part of the story. A deep river runs underneath. Here he doesn’t direct his gaze towards an idealized lover, like “Keep on Walking” (an earlier gem it recalls), but toward another perhaps more fundamental primitive desire: how one engages with creative love itself.

Indeed with a little imagination one can go deeper by substituting Gino’s voice for ours. And that voice both reveals and challenges us. Where are you, O sage of passionate selflessness? Can one sing through the bleak “darkness and despair” of a personal midwinter? Can radical love flourish in this crazy physically-obsessed world? Gino and friends tacitly seem to assure us: yes, it can.
