  • It's getting so sad how so many men feel the need to express their sexual attraction in a video that's about a young girl. Pathetic.

  • @Tearlach2012 Gonna cry over it?

  • Sometimes I wonder what would have happened had Eisel been able to serve out the match? Luckily we'll never know. :)

  • I have films of the place. Used to work here. I met Chrissy.

  • porque en la placa dice 1971 us open? y luego debajo dice 'sept, 4 1974'....???? es de 1971 o 1974???

  • Bud Collins looks like that wig salesman in Goodfellas. Wanna see him delivering the line "Am I something special? Some sort of schmuck on wheels?"

  • She still pretty much looks the same 3 or 4 plastic surgeries later. Go figure

  • chris is the hottest and smartest tennis babe I've seen.

  • wow!

Chrissy Evert! I wasn't even born when this was played. She's so hot.

  • chrissie is so cute!

  • como se nota que el tenis femenino a evolucionado, muchas tenistas de ahora se pasearian en esos tiempos, es increible que hayan jugado pasado los treinta años ahora seria imposible. Gracias por subir este video, saludos de un amigo peruano en España.

  • Chrissie was such a lady always.

  • chrissie babe, u married the wrong aussie

  • yes, she was only 16..........

  • Us open on the lawn? so it got through all three the surfaces. I knew Forrest Hill was for the clay. Where is that from?

  • haha, they play like 2 amateurs on nice weekend, any proffesional girl nowadays would destroy them

  • remember this is before the age of the new racquets, and even the new balls....the balls they are hitting are heavier than todays, plus they were white which picked up the grass stains....and they were ladies, not the ubermen that rule the courts now..

  • Chris was like 17

  • 16 actually, 4 months shy of 17.

  • great tennis!

  • how can you say great tennis this is so low level any amateur can beat them, of course bad rackets but still so not professional

  • The racquets make a big difference. The sweet spot is so small on these old wood racquets that it was very difficult to play with power. Sure, training overall is better these days at the professional level, but these folks weren't out of shape, and Eisel was No. 4 in the world at the time. The racquets are the biggest factor here.

  • the racqets and even the balls...which were heavier and white,,,,after a few games they were grass stained and hard to see as well....

  • Yah, right ! Okay ... then...

  • remember it looks slower now too because of the age of it...in person, they hit very hard...i saw both of them play...and unless the guy was a pro, most men got their asses kicked by them..

  • Finally someone actually has seen them play? I saw most all of these players on the slims tour in the 70s The clips are great, but don't give a true representation of their abilities. I saw Chris so many times and she did HIT the ball--you had to with wood rackets and in the center and it was not easy to play with them. After taking off from the game for 20+ yrs I found these new rackets easy to play with. I am now a serve and volleyer with a power game! Where did you see them play?

  • i saw chris and bjk at the us open back in the early 80s....bjk was playing doubles, but chrissie was still playing singles , with her wood racquet.....i loved playing with wood.....it took me really long to find a racquet i liked.....it ended up being a kennex racquet with a really dense string pattern...i had it about a month and it got stolen out of my car....and then they stopped making it....lol...my luck sucks... now , im playing with a slazenger tim henman racquet and if it breaks im done

  • That's funny because I always wanted a Slazenger racket. You are going to give up so easily? But sorry to hear your racket got stolen.

Would you buy one on ebay?

  • the racquet stolen happened ages ago.....i did buy a racquet on ebay....a pro kennex WOOD, standard size, never used...its a beauty...i had it strung with gut and i was hitting great with it....but it was very hard to keep up with the pace that the new racquets generate.....it felt like cannonballs hitting my frame.... the strings broke after one day.....

  • chrisrei10...Evert loved pace, both she and Connors used the pace of the ball from the other player to generate power...the thing is with these new rackets you can get away with a shorter backswing, which also reduces errors. Evert used her body and followed through for power, now they can use the racket and arm more...but if you shorten (slow), bend and rotate you can use the cannonballs and generate just as much pace back with less effort, hope this does not sound like I am a know it all.

  • youre exactly right....with my bigger racquet, i mostly block the ball back now, the best part about the new racquets is that it makes net play MUCH easier....i hardly ever played the net with the wood racquet, now, im up there alot..

  • I love Chris Evert

and did you know that this video was referenced as the 8th must-see youtube clups on youtube by Tennis magazine?

i dunno if it was this video exactly but this was an unbelievable match

  • pretty good---she had that killer backhand--real reliable,,especially cdrosscourt drive

  • at 7:21 in the video it says the year is 1974 so which is it 71 or 74?

  • It has to be '71. By 1974 Chris Evert had a more mature womanly look. Here you can see she's clearly only 16.

  • it's 1971 and ESPN classic is replayiing it in 1974

  • That can't be right. ESPN wasn't around in 1974.

  • this was shown on espn classic they show old stuff on that channel, and this guy copied this video from me when i used to have this up on my old account, anyways i put it up again in much better quality than his copycat video.

  • It's 1971, because TENNIS magazine just published it.

  • She showed more outward emotion then but later she didnt.....

  • i know this guy copied this match from me when i had it up on youtube on my old account,it even started at the same point when mine did.

  • omg evert is hot.

  • Bud Collins hasn't changed in all those years - does he ever draw breath! Try counting the number of times he uses the names of the two players in a ten minute spell.

  • trop mignonne chris evert elle avait 15 ans

  • No wonder she's called the ice maiden. No emotions absolutely at such tender age. Like a 50 yr old living inside a 16 yr old body. Poor Mary Anne, up agst one of the greatest champions of all time.

  • if you watch closely right after the point ends, she(Evert) slaps hew thigh in frustration, arches her back in disgust. not the overt histronics of others but there are emotions displayed .....ciao:~)

p.s. and she is one the greatest ever

  • Yeah, those small signes are there. But she was a 16 yr old in a GRAND SLAM match down 6 match pts. Those emotional marks were really next to nothing.

  • Chris, cruised through until she fell victim to eventual champion Billie Jean King in the semi final. Chris was 16

  • Chris had an easy first match, then saved six match points against Mary-Ann Eisel in this match before beating Francoise Durr 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the last 16 and Lesley Hunt 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the quarter finals. Easy?

  • the chair umpire use to announce a double fault?

  • Yes, talk about rubbing it in!

  • Anyone know why that space at Forest Hills was so big? Did they ever play matches on either side of that particular court?

  • yes and they usually played them at the same time so you could be watching like 4 or 5 matches all being played at the all right next to each other.

  • Madre mi, todavia era en hierba

  • So much has been written about this particular match over the years and it's great to see some of it here. Chris, of course, won this match and made it to the semis where she faced Billie Jean King. Billie Jean later wrote that she actually cried before her match with Chris - being so sure she'd lose, and essentially, see the end of her dream of being a force for change in women's professional tennis. Billie steadied herself and beat Chris handily in the semis and would go on to win the final.

  • I really feel for Mary Ann Eisel.

  • Thanks for posting this, I'm a huge Chrissie fan.

  • not anymore...

the ball boys and girls eventually threw Evert the second ball when she missed her first serve

  • are players allowed to just drop the ball when they make their first serve?

  • Allowed. Players may toss the ball a second time if they feel that the toss is not right or they're distracted by anything as long as they haven't struck the ball after the first toss.

  • How exciting. Thanks for posting.

I hope it doesn't get removed.

  • Wow, brings back memories. I remember watching Chrissy become famous growing up in Ft. Lauderdale. I watched her play on court 2 at Tennis Club. Wow did she draw crowds. Great job on video.
