  • I admit, i was very wary about something called the "Hot Mikado", but THIS version, I think I could love. Of course, I'm biased as I'm obsessed with swing. :)

  • those bitches ruined the originals

the original is more funnier and cute

  • WOWEE... this is so hot and so wonderful. i LOVE IT!!!

  • this video is pretty neat thank you for posting it

  • AW REET!!!

  • I can't decide if I like this or not!

  • I love this version :) I now there's a whole lot of people who will disagree with me, but I think the music in Hot Mikado is really clever... And a good way to make the music appeal to a new audience. My school did this a few years ago and I really enjoyed it. And it made me look up all the original songs. At this point I was 15. There is not a lot that would motivate a 15 year old to search for Gilbert and Sullivan songs of their own accord...

  • @caitlin0903 I loved swing music at 15 - if I'd had access to "The Hot Mikado" I'd have been singing this in the house constantly and annoying everyone.

  • If the original is like a fine chocolate bar, this is a sort of hot fudge sundae with nuts and cherries.

  • LOVE IT!

  • I remember seeing them at the theatre several times!! Most of the cast where from the old cast of Grease, which i also saw them several times in. AMAZING cast!! Wish i could go back to my childhood days and go and watch them all over again!!

  • This is great - harmonies are intricate and sung with flare. The original is brilliant also, but belongs to a different genre altogether so one cannot really compare the two realistically! Thumbs up.

  • I thought this was fun!

  • Entertaining version, but a looooong way from what G&S had in mind! And somewhat missing the point, methinks?

My oh my, the things that have been done to their work since the copyright ran out.... :(

  • LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • haters suck. the change was really nice. i like it!

  • there brill singers but they murdered this song :-(

  • definitely no comparison to the original, but very fun nonetheless :)

  • They ruined it! It sucks!

  • D: no.

  • Yeah.... this is an insult to the original.

  • Not funny or clever.

  • Three little maids who, all unwary, come from a Ladies' Tutilary? I think not :)

  • Meh.

  • This is gay.

  • Wondering if the Puppini Sisters took any inspiration from this show?

  • This would really irritate me if it were done, in some sense straight.

As a 40s spoof/pastiche? Great! Not because it makes fun of the 40s but because it's such a good and unlikely piece of that style.

Disclosure: decade I was born in. (But save your Boomer Hate, I'm not one.)

  • I love the way in every vid on you tube there is garunteed to be an argument in the comment section involving name calling anger and quite often swearing !!!

    I personly think it's really funny !!

love this version btw !!!! thnxs for posting it, I'm doing this song with two of my mates and it has really helped !! oh nd iff anyone can find lyrics PLEASE send me a link !

    thnx :D

  • Hey Bec :)

I agree this is really good its funny how looked at the same vid :) Thanks for posting this !!! Woo I'm one of your mates xxxx

  • love it! i mean i still love the the g&s version, but this does it justice i feel.

  • OH MY. Alison Jiear is one of my ALLTIME favourite singers!!! Thanks so much for posting this! Met her once and she was so nice! What a fantastic mix voice, a bell like quality and a real powerhouse too. her album Simply has been playing in my flat for years!!!

  • I prefer my G&S played "straight", without camp, as the original is funnier when the absurd situations are played as though they are perfectly normal and correct. So, I was nervous about "Hot Mikado". This sample has made me want to see the whole play--maybe only once, but at least that much. Nice performance.

  • Wow! This is an awesome rendition of a great song! Thoroughly enjoyed this! Thank you!

  • the girl in pink look pretty

  • during that fast part, did they say "who you know i nagasaki?"

  • BGDVA respects everyone's opinions, but is hysterical that someone with half a brain cannot think of something more creative to say than "The girl in the orange dress is very fat". No desire to delete comment as it simply displays that CRAZYFORFUDGE has limited vocabulary. Never mind.

  • @BGDVA The girl in the orange dress is actually a friend of mine and very sucsessful in the theatre business, so she has done something right!! Shame the idiot has nothing better to say about the video!!!

  • the woman is the orange dress is very fat which

i think her name is pitti-sing or peep-bo

  • @CRAZYFORFUDGE

I was thinking that too, but she's actually not that big, it's just compared to the other ladies who *are* super svelte.

On a side note I think it's quite amusing you're commenting on bodyweight when your username is crazy for fudge ;) I love it!

  • @LOTRFAN827

well...umm....thx? i was watchin this cuz i was in this play at my school

    but still....thx!

  • dont really care for this I like the original

  • I love to hear songs taken out of their original styles, this was a fun interpretation, along the lines of walter murphy's "a fifth of beethoven", or taco's "putting on the ritz".

would love to be able to see this show done live somewhere.

  • not as good as the original

  • Good to see a new take on this, but I think the singing could have been more dynamic in places.

  • Makes this Opera so much more interesting...although I do love the original one as well, this is just an awesome new take on it/

  • i love it....i think stuff like this brings a whole new generation to not only broadway and the west end but musicals....i think its great

  • I am an devotee of Gilbert and Sullivan, and throughly enjoyed this. Mike Todd (Elizabeth Taylor's husband) started this back in the 1940s. I noticed that whoever wrote this did not change any of Gilbert's words. It is fun, which unfortunately is a quality that many Savoyards seem to forget.

  • This is great!

  • If you can sex up Shakspeare, G&S shouldn't be ouyt of bounds either. Besides, G&S were ruthless theatrical businessmen...they would have loved this! Their estate will be happy too!

  • I think the rights may have expired. hence the boogie-woogie version.

  • HMS Pinafore or Penzance were far more famous. Also how do you set a musical in 1940s Japan(So nice they nuked it twice)? Does it end with a fade to white or is it full of allied servicemen?

  • The Mikado is much better known world wide than either Pinafore or Pirates.

  • No not really, given that their most famous songs a British Tar and A Modern Major General are from Pinafore and Pirates respectively

  • people need to calm down. yes G&S's version is amazing but this isnt doing any harm to it. its something new and different and audiences are eating it up :) plus it sells. i dont see G&S on broadway right now but i sure see alot of riffing. :) just saying.

  • the one at aberystwyth was amazing tonight :D

    it was brilliant

  • Watched a live performance of this in Aberystwyth tonight. It really is as bad as it looks and sounds. If you enjoy Gilbert & Sullivan then stay well clear of this nonsense. On the other hand, if you are about 14 years old and are happy watching X-Factor, Fame etc then you'll possibly like it.

  • Yes Alan, it was like I have never heard it sung before - thank goodness!

  • horrible version of a great song.

  • I played katisha in hot mikado! i loved it!

  • It so utterly loses the point that It becomes pointless. Poor Gilbert, his billious satire turned into log fire entertainment. Shame on you all!

  • CUTE .... I LOVE ORIGINALITY

  • I just saw Hot Mikado nd it was amazing! I really want to see it again-but i think the version i saw was better than this version-not being cruel to them, they r all good singers and dancers, but in the version i saw they danced around a bit more.

  • I will not tolerate racist comments on my profile. I will report you to youtube the next time this occurs.

  • @BGDVA bravo and well said. i love shagging chinky birds

  • This might be fun, but the original is much naughtier...

  • FAIL

  • The haters should STFU. There's no HARM in doing it a different way, it doesn't hurt the original. I feel sorry for those so threatened by a little variety. Dueling musical genres, can't we all just get along?

  • pitti-sing's like the blackest of all the characters and she's the only white one here.

    randooooommmm

  • In original casting, she was white.

  • The Hot Mikado ain't an improvement The Original is infinatley coyer Sexier & naughtier stop Dicking around with timeless masterpieces

  • I saw this song on zack&cody but it sounds not like this

  • That's probably the original song from "The Mikado"

  • I really want to know what Pish-Tush's solo is like in this show, i played him last October in the originally written score and loved that song, a jazzed up version could be even cooler.

  • I like the original better, but this version is too fun to really dislike.

  • @curlytoes79 i know i love it i have a skool mikado performance tomorrow...im scared lol

  • We're doing this in skl! And I'm playin' Pitti-Sing! I'm so happy! =]

  • i like the 1 in the blue dress

  • Peep-Bo

  • It's a bit odd seeing this particular song interpreted like this.

In the original they were three fairly naive and giggly young Japanese girls, shy and rather gauche.

    This version is all wrong.

Not saying I don't like re-interpretations of classics, but they could have worked this particular song just as well without being brash about it.

  • The Hot Mikado is great fun. Very different from the original I'll admit but it makes it more accessible to younger people who might find the original a little dry. I love them both in their own ways.

  • Oh, c'mon people! Get some crative juices and relax a bit. It's a great adaptation of the original G+S piece. That's what's great about music, it's very fluid and open for variations. You can love the original, but be open. I think this was a fantastic '40's version of the song.

  • just not feelin' it.

  • I like this but i dont think its better or worse than the original... it just depends what mood you're in hehehe

  • derivation? in a spoof musical? never!

  • So do I

  • I love this song! I played Nanki-Poo in my schools production of this.

This song is really great. A lot of G+S is very satirical and of the time, so it would have to be updated to make sense, and I think that the Hot Mikado is a very good reworking of an amazing operetta.

  • amazing revamp! better than g + s!!!!

  • can't hold a candle to the REAL mikado.

  • yeah but its a good arrangement

  • I love this! I did the Mikado and was Pitti Sing!

  • love it!

  • As Nadakio stated earlier,

My school performed this musical this thursday to saturday.

    I played Pooh-Bah!

    It was an awesome experience

    Anyway, nice video xD

  • heyy nickk :) and by the way .. nadakio is nadine =]

    and i'm andy :)

  • heya nick ;p

  • Beautifully orchestrated and really well sung. What a lot of work to rewrite the opera in the jazz idiom.

  • This is the most fun show I have ever been in! If you get a chance to see it do it! You will love it!

  • we did this show for our summer theatre program.

    i played katisha

this is an amazingly fun and lively show

    gotta love it

  • Our school is performing this in Chichester (west sussex, england) next year february i think.

  • heyy nadine

  • I love this show so much! It's really rediculously fun.

  • Gilbert & Sullivan turn in their graves every time this is played, and performed in this garish manner.

  • Actually, though I have been known to complain about Modern versions of Gilbert and Sulliven, I think this is how they would have written it if they lived in the 40s

  • Alison Jiear is amazing. Im so glad she went on past Hot Mikado though! She was incredible in Jerry Springer the Opera

  • I was played a lead role when I was at school in South Africa, Fantastic!!!

  • cool

  • I liked it... It's different, definitely, but it's still good.

  • the few productions I have seen of this, the leads were always horrible and showboating, then there was always the chorus singer who was showboating because they didnt get their big part they wanted.

its nice to see a trio that work well together and dont overpower each other.

  • My school just did this play... Great but I didn't really like the jazzy-ness the original was funnyier because it tried to be traditional but at the same time making fun of it. Still was a good play

  • A fantastic, fresh take on an already great show. Beautiful costumes, too.

  • Oh my god, I can't even watch this.. They are very talented singers, but I just can't watch The Mikado like this..

  • ah i am scared what the?

  • Cool!

  • Weird. Persoanlly, I think the original Mikado is better.

  • Yes!
