I went to see Joan Baez about eight years ago and she did this song. It was pretty incredible. Much better than this studio version. From time to time I read theories about what this song "means." If you know anything about Dylan, you understand that most of his songs are lyrical, metaphors that the listener can apply to their own lives. This song appeared at a time in my life where I was surviving by being able to be absent when it mattered. It is always a reminder of the best of those times.
Love this Dylan song. I love the way Bob sings it on "Blood On The Tracks" and I love the way Joan interprets it in her style with her wonderful voice.
I do not discuss, of course, Dylan's originality, authority or perfection, but I have to admit that Joan Baez made a beautiful cover of this song; the way her voice just floats over the words and music... It has always been one of my real favorite versions of her.
I was living with a beautiful co ed about a hundred yards from the ocean when we used to listen to this song. No money.but god we were happy even if we couldn't figure out what this song meant.
listened to this and loved it in the 70's and still love it today. Dylan is genius and Joan is amazing. Never forget seeing her in San Diego way back when.
Bob Dylan is still America's premier troubadour. Of course, Stoney, one of my college classmates, sang with him during the earliest days at various places. . .it was "our" era and I still tune my guitar the Dylan way when playing his music.
@XLily96 I wasn;t going to comment on this site again for fear of looking like a babble mouth but I have to say your father has great taste. Lily Rosemary is such a lovely name.
A great cover, thanks for posting! I finally understand all the words now! What it ultimately MEANS is still tangled up in, well, whatever it's tangled up in, the house on Montague St, or boat outside of Delacroix, maybe, leaning to the J♥, helped out of a jam before being abandoned out west. As for the silly speculation here re Joan&Bob: this song is contemporary with Diamonds+Rust, i.e. LONG after their time together in the Village. She just had a good ear for a good tune (& a golden voice!).
@deriter64 I too do not want to outlive Ms. Baez. She has been and continues to be a powerful force in my life and the thought of living and knowning that she is no long part of the world would be too much to bear. Peace be with you.
she covered the songs because she could sing them just like beautiful melanie safka however joan baez as well as melanie safka have written songs that bob dylan can't touch as well as folk singers stick together weirdo
As much as I love Blood on the Tracks, and as many times as I've played Dylan's version, there's just a magic to J.B.'s reading of the song. It was wonderful to find it here on YouTube.
Prettier is a matter of subjective opinion that cannot be measured/defined in a meaningful way. In terms of tonal accuracy/perfection of pitch, Bob Dylan is an impeccable singer. You may find the particular resonance of Baez's voice to be more aurally pleasing than that of Dylan's, but this does not mean in any way that the same will be considered true for other individuals. Nor is there any worthwhile reason for contending that such is so. Capice?
Trying to figure out this song filled many smoky, boozy evenings way back when. Fun then. Now it's just enough to listen to the beauty of the barefoot Madonna. Thanks.
Read her autobiography and she'll tell you exactly why she covered a lot of Dylan songs. Because they're so damn good, that's why. According to her he wrote the best songs of that era. I tend to agree. It's very refreshing to hear Joan do the Dylan stuff, because she does it in her own unique style which is pretty much summed up by the word "impeccable". She also said Dylan was a terrific singer...and yes, he was...back then.
@Morgteck dylan still is a great singer, just different to how he used to be ... no one can spit out a lyric with as much attitude as dylan does nowadays period. dont hate on the great one
@rantnraging - Oh, yes, I'd agree with that. His phrasing and expression is very effective, as always. What I was referring to was the loss of his range. He used to be able to sing the high notes strong and clear, but the upper end of his range is gone now. That happens to the majority of singers eventually..they lose the top end of their range. It happened to Ian Tyson recently...his voice is wrecked now, and he once had a very fine singing voice.
@Morgteck fair play, you are right about the range..... and I think your the first person not to take one of my comments as a personal insult and slag me off... kudos... Im just glad we have old bob and new bob
@rantnraging Me too. ;-) I like both versions of Mr Dylan. He's a fascinating character who has given us a lifetime of amazing songs. I have always loved his music and Joan Baez's too. I'm a singer myself, and I cover a lot of the same material. If you do a search for "George Coventry" here on Youtube, you'll find a video of me playing one of Bob's songs.
@Morgteck Dylan actually can SING when really wants to; indeed, he can sing some pretty moving stuff. His VOICE is, to put it kindly, an acquired taste, but he really can SING. I wouldn't trade beautifully moving performances of "It's Not Dark Yet," "Trying to Get to Heaven," "Mississippi," or "Shooting Star," to name a few for anyone with a more aesthetically pleasing voice.
@Sisury First Joan did not sing every song Dylan wrote. Quite the contrary. As for Dylan, Joan transformed the hillibilly to breath-taking beautiful. Those Dylan songs would not have sold if it weren`t for Joan.
@clownhotel84 Then you don`t know your music history. Joan Baez was close to an overnight sensation even before she met Dylan. Joan already recorded three albums that were all hits. During Joan`s concert tours, she dragged Dylan onto the stage with her because she believed he was very talented. When Joan was already giving concerts internationally, many that didn`t know Dylan thought he just sounded like a hillbilly. With Joan`s constant prodding, people slowly began to hear of Dylan more.
I heard this on one of her albums in the mid '70''s. If you look at her discography, I think you can find it. It was on an album with "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". As far as comparing voices, obviously joan baez has a beautiful singing voice, but Bob Dylan was the definitve songwriter of the folk movement of the 60's.
When Joan was in her prime, she had the prettiest voice I ever heard. When she was with Vanguard, I mean. I don`t think we will ever have another Joan Baez. Her voice was the prettiest ever heard! I like this song, but it isn`t the definitive Baez.
