De Valera was an anti treaty politician who went into government in the Republic of Ireland after the civil war, the gov was seen as illegitemate by anti treaty IRA- thats why they say he is greatly to blame.
De Valera was a sly fox. He knew that home rule for the whole 32 wasn't on the cards, so he sent Michael Collins and Co to the Treaty negotiations. Thus he didn't get the blame for partition, even though he knew that a slice off a cut load is better than no bread.

None that I know of. Luke was a bit wary of violence in the pursuit of justice. The translator in this last remaining version of Luke singing this song could be a neo-nazi. Mor an trua nach bhfuil leagan glan ar fail.

Don't delude yourself, Britain's done terrible things in Ireland but, come off it, what about Germany? Hardly a country of sympathy for national liberation. I don't think the average german stands behind the cause of republicanism, unless maybe it means holiday homes in the west might stay cheap. Not to mention, wasn't it a german that got Sinn Fein banned from selling their 'sniper at work' t-shirts?!

fair enough, i won't pretend to know a lot about german history but i was talking about 20th C. politics, not 19th C. romanticism of a battle that happened in 9AD! What i was initially complaining about was people from historically well off countries pretending to understand what its like to come from a country with a history of colonisation. I tire of meeting germans (and others) in ireland who are all for the quaint dancin' irishman but who make no effort to understand of our difficult history

I'd never seen it that way. I thought Behan was lamenting the hatred that was fostered in young people that led to their spending years in gaol or losing their lives - over something as abstract and irrelevant as a government. I think O'Hanlon is supposed to be a hate-filled parody.

fergel o hanolan was killed along side sean south (not from limrick as depicted in the song ''sean south'' he was actualy from what was known as ''sackville street'' in an attack on the british dureing the border campign of the 50's.

Great song, sung by the best. Yes it is good to hear the full version. It tells us the obvious, Luke was indeed, a good honest republican. In a political sense of course. Modern Republicanism would have made him sick. Democracy is the only way Ireland will be restored as a nation, I think Luke knew that but God he loved singing the old rebel tunes..

De Valera was a sly fox. He knew that home rule for the whole 32 wasn't on the cards, so he sent Michael Collins and Co to the Treaty negotiations. Thus he didn't get the blame for partition, even though he knew that a slice off a cut load is better than no bread.
