  • a voice of a hero

  • This is a fabulous version of this patriotic song, I am English, not that it matters & I love this song & In my opinion Luke together with Sean Cannon are magic voices.!! Thank you Kellyoneil

  • Sadly this is ruined by the German speaking. But thank god for Luke. He sung this song the way it needs with the truth and blame point at De Valera

  • I believe that's from the TV or radio of the former GDR. The Dubliners were actually allowed to play in East Germany. Apparently not everything was bad in the communist block...

  • unreal german rap haha

  • lol that idiot dublinnoely claims he grew up with luke kelly and yet hes 42 and from the US. What a pillock. Sure no1 can check.....

  • Kelly you have probably been asked this loads of times but is there a version anywhere without the German language audio track over it?

  • @Shagrat65 Not that I have been able to find so far, still looking though :)

  • hearing this translated to german is somehow very comforting, obviously the germans appreciate luke too, hats off kelly, love ur vids.

  • wtf????

  • god bless luke kelly!! all thats gone before is confined to history but long live ireland!!!!!!

  • @tomthetiler01 How beautifully put.... God bless and long live Ireland and Irish people. The world is a better place for us being here! Erin go bragh!!!!

  • I wish to god that the rest of the Welsh people would feel for there land as the Irish do . FE GODWN IN ETO

  • Do you have it without the german voiceover?

  • Anybody who blames Mick Collins is deluded. Before his death he had the IRA launching raids into NI, it was his plan to reunite Ireland. Read his work - A Path to Freedom - You'll learn the Collins had it right, DeValera Fucked it up big time.

  • @EireAontaighe Quite right.

  • @EireAontaighe yes i agree,if only the brits had shot the bastard and pearce had survived,

  • O'Hanlon was killed in the border campaign. That's what the song is about: the tragedy of young lives being lost as a result of being brainwashed by political idealogy. Dominick Behan wrote this song. For another view of this, read his brother Brendan's book The Borstal Boy. Kelly, I like this version with the German voiceover. Would it be possible to let me have a copy? LOL

  • @slm5muph Sure :) Just send me your email address.

  • @slm5muph brainwashed? He died trying to free his country from forgien occupation, his living comrades who were with him that night are very proud to have given there service to ireland just as Fergal o hanlon and sean sabath did! at the end he speaks of wanting to fight on and how he and his comrades were failed by traitors like devalera.

  • @slm5muph Actually this song is about the free staters selling out and the resulting freestate. If you listen to the lyrics it talks about De Valera and how he shirked the patriot game. Oh and it also supports the killing of 26 counties police officers. It isn't about "brainwashing" when infact Dominic Behan supported the IRA and was himself a member.

  • @daire1916 ur dead right, one of the greatest songs to tell the irish story after partition

  • Folk calm down this is a sad song about a dreadful time in Ireland's sad history. That's al over and done unless you want to bring all of that back and start shooting at each other. The nasty comments sure do not honor Irish patriots. There are more problems in todays world to fight for and against it's 2010.

  • @Astrodan2600 Absolutely, well put!!

  • @Astrodan2600 Absoutely, well put!! Luke ,the genious.

  • I love the german voice over .... kelly was a real patroit... wish he was still with us....

  • kelly have you got a version posted of this song without the other language ??

  • if you could all hear and know how perfect this mans version of what has been voted the greatest irish song of the last hundred years;

you would realise the complete insignificance of propoganda/ editing /irrelevance!

    After Dominic L.K is the real deal.{please listen to Raglan Road}

  • to kelly thanks for the gift of listening to my dubliners ,all my tapes have been by tape recorders and players dont pay any attention to the idiots whosay stupid stuff in anominity. thank you very much

  • @blackbog69 You are very welcome and thank you :)

  • could someone with music production software remove the voice over? or find they the original recording? absolute shame to talk over luke kelly

  • REBELS come on cork .beat the british out of ireland.only sorry we didnt finish the job.

  • @daveeol the reason tat the british are still in our country is because of you free staters who left us people in the north of ireland!! you prob no us as the black north

  • @inisboy1 well the plan was to get the 26 counties first and move the ira north to destroy the crown forces there and make the border unable to funtion as their were large amounts of recently inactive ira men in the south.this started with mick collins sending guns and supplies to the ulster army council.when the civil war started in the south and the death of collins it all fell to shit leaving with those english neighbors.a pity

  • @inisboy1 i have never heard the term the black north before we only refer to unionists or orangemen as black.

  • why is this gob shite talking over the song. Put subtitles at the botttom u dope

  • This is the best version, because (in addition to his great voice) I think Luke sings all the verses that Dominic Behan wrote. The Clancys and others usually left some of it out. The voice over takes away from it. But fair play for the Germans for taking an interest in it anyway.

  • Wake up IRA

  • True song, true song

  • Extremely powerful song even with the german translation. In fact it serves to remind how powerful this song is across national and cultural boundaries.

  • Comment removed

  • fuck this Nazi over dub shite !

  • @dublinnoely Germans are not Nazis, this times are over

  • @dublinnoely Thats just like stating "being Irish means were guilty so were guilty one and all "

Keep your Racism to yourself, It's not welcome on these videos

  • @kellyoneill Go fuck yourself you cheeky cunt ! Im right!. Dont tell me whats welcome and what isnt. You have no idea who I am child ! I grew up with Luke Kelly you pup !

  • @dublinnoely I gont give a flying fu*k who ya grew up with, you are a horrid racist I have a lot of German friends and none of which are Nazi's! Go spill your hatred on somebody elses vids coz ya blocked from these ones!

  • You know the bite of it all? If the Irish had all of their needs met they would not be the dynamic interesting people they are today. They would be more like us apathetic Americans and never produce people like Fergus O'Hanlon, or Luke Kelly.

  • Is there any other recording of this? I went all around town looking for this but the only version I can find is on Dubliners CDs and whoever sings it is fuckin shit, some country fella with a weird voice. This is my favourite song and Lukes my favourite singer really hope I can find it!!!

  • If someone has the original file, then perhaps I can try to remove the voiceover? Should work, but the quality of the song will probably be poorer. Yet, likely better without the german guy.

  • @PKtheFirst you could download the youtube video (pick a free program from google). I am dying to find a non-translated version of this!

  • @Stoltzfus The youtube-version is all stereo, so I can't kill the german guy:/

  • @PKtheFirst I am going crazy trying to find a version of this without the translator. It simply was not recorded. >:

  • @PKtheFirst I am going crazy trying to find a recording of this without the German translator. It appears that such a recording does not exist >:

  • thx for an german version of this song. i am impressed by the fight for independence of the irishmen. i wish, that those mind would swap over to all countries to overwhelm every pseudo-democracy in the world and, of course, the direct dictatorships... sry for my miserable english... but the irishmen are brave people and i hope, that every country will be so brave... in a near future

  • I would love this song without the interpreter.

  • PLEASE DOES ANYONE HAVE THIS WITHOUT THE INTERPRETER??? IM WILLING TO PAY AT THIS STAGE!!

  • Thanks k for posting this and all the other stuff from Luke. Hours of great listening! This one has created a bit of a political stir. The interesting fact is that when Dominic Behan wrote this it was ironically intended but patriotically received! (And nothing has changed)

  • Luke Kelly was never to afraid to sing the version naming De Valera. Wish more of the other singing this song had the guts.

  • Ignoring the politics for a moment

I would love to get a copy of Lukes brilliant version of this song without the voiceover. Anyone know if its possible??

  • great version of this song, for paul barnes him with the enlish name cop on tell me this when was ireland a nation, if i remember correctly from history we were a an island of 4 countries and these scotish prods are prob alot more irish than you ya twat

  • You are an Icon of a forgoten empire, long live the revolution...

  • no its not racism its princapal 800 years of rape murder and slavery and were still not free i cant speak for every irish man but i am anti-english and i no a fair few who are aswel..and im a againist them scottish prods in the north of ireland they are pure scum immegrents want to fuck off back to scotland if you ask me..

  • 6 counties still unfree, ruled from across the irish sea, by a country of inbreds. we shall never forget no matter where we walk the 800 years of rape and destruction. god bless ireland.

  • why the fuck is there a man talking through this to ruin a great song?

  • it a broadcast version from germany

  • regardless of the backround its the voice which makes this the best verison, the feeling ah god ...he gets it perfect every time. Never heard Luke anything other than magnificent , thats the truth.

  • good point lad!!

  • enyrb: First of all, learn your history you uneducated muppet. The English have been oppressing the Irish for 800 years, so if anything, they're the racist ones. Secondly, who are you to pass judgment? You don't like racism? Move off of the planet because it exists EVERYWHERE.

  • @enyrb were not racist mate jus people get anoyd listening 2 tat german wen your tring 2 listen 2 mr kelly its very rare song for luke 2 sing the irish are anti-english not anti-german so you go fuck yourself as your old grandmother would say..

  • Can anyone please tell me where I can get a copy of Luke the ledgend singing this without the weird voice over?

  • leave out the crap voice over and let a legend sing

  • ich komme aus irland, bin stolz darauf.. natuerlich... warum diese scheisse sogenannte "uebersetzung"... zerstoert dieses lied, ich muss dass sagen...

    rip luke love you always

  • Shame about the voiceover, but Luke's version is the best I've ever heard.

  • Lovely song but hitler got a bit annoying

  • Terrible this fucking translation. Type Patriot game by Searching und you will find a few more. poor Luke kelly.

I love him and I hate this fucking acehole, destroying the song.

    Anyhow i am German

  • actualy i like the additional german translation. the pathos of kellys singing combined with this calm voice leaves me with a melancholic feeling

  • A fine song; however I wish that Hini would shut his gob.

  • I wish that amadan would shut up ! Let Luke Kelly sing.

  • be proud of the fact that the germans loved this song bye irelands finest.

  • The Germans then, and the Germans today, are two different people,i personally know why the Germans did what they did,but from talking to Germans in Ireland today, things are not easy,a lot has changed.many Germans i spoke too, talk about huge amount of extra taxes,i cant say it is true, but they are a serious people when it comes to work,i know because i have relatives working over there, they are a very focused people, its like as if something has touched them, there is a good side to Germans.......

  • Comment removed

  • @vanhoog dont talk rubbish, go and seek help for yourself.

  • @irishgeal1 this is a German song loved by Irish. Die Moorsoldaten.

  • Could someone PLEASE tell me if theres a version witou d german on d net???? tanks

  • fatherted101, Ireland is not free.

  • You're quite right there!

Ireland in part of the European Union, and already Brussels, Frankfurt and Strassbourg exert more power over Ireland's law and economy than London ever did.

And if Ireland votes Yes to Lisbon, Ireland becomes a minor colony again.

  • the german makes it better if possible. it ads a solemnithy

  • Aber warum singt er in des Feindes Sprache?

  • If he was born in a barn would it make him a horse?

  • Rare to hear Luke singing this song. This is my fathers fav song. Also love Ciaran Burkes version

  • Ciaran doesnt have a verison of this does he? I know the other dubliners verison is of Bobby Lynch singing it.

  • thats what i thought too

  • Aye, Bob Lynch sings it, very nicely too, on their second LP, 'In Concert'.

  • whos that eejit talkin, ruins a great song

  • Dr Johnson was a English traitor ha ha

  • That man spoils it, is there a verison without him on it ? lol

  • Who is that amadan translating? I wish he'd stop.

  • i agree

  • Doctor Johnson can suck my plums for all i care. Just because one man said one thing doesnt make him right.

If it wasn't for patriots, Ireland, and many other countries wouldnt be the nations free from tyranny that they are today. This is a song about patriotism if you listened to the fucking lyrics.

One thing my father said, which has logic and meaning, not just a statement was

"If you're not proud of who you are and where you come from; you're no-one"

    Im a proud irish patriot

  • good attempt

    i expect you mean -

    tá do lá tagaithe -

níl sé tagaithe fós - ach - tiocfaidh ár lá

translation - for those who speak the language of the English -

your day has come - no, it hasn't yet - but, our day will come.

  • "whenever their is a vaiguily irish song all the undesiribles come out of the woodwork"

yeah - you just proved your point

& BTW - tiocfaidh ár lá

mow - you can go " insane"

    good riddance.

  • God Bless Luke Kelly and Feargal O`Hanlon......

  • its a great song by a great singer but the german translator does get a bit repetitive and annoying after a while

  • Anyone know is there a Luke Kelly version up without the translation?

  • To jmcjmc2007,

None that I know of. Luke was a bit wary of violence in the pursuit of justice. The translator in this last remaining version of Luke singing this song could be a neo-nazi. Mor an trua nach bhfuil leagan glan ar fail.

  • Trua gan dabht, tá fonn orm go mbeadh..

  • It wouldn't be the same without the german in it

  • Reply to FROGGYDOHERTY: Not all of us in the 26 are so ignorant although I admit that quite a high percentage are.

It is human nature to bury just causes if your own life or liveliehod would be threatened by your involvement in righting wrongs. It is also, sadly, human nature that many people in this situation resort to condemning the people who choose to try to right the wrongs. Republican in the 26 during the years of war was synonymous with pariah.

    KON, take out the translator.

  • if you care to look at my profile you will see plenty of irish songs eg luke kelly the dubs ect i was taking the piss out of the german voiceover get your facts right before you start slagging people off

    slainte

  • why is adolfs mate translating a great song

    2 worlds war and a world cup!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • who is adollfsss?? Ich hab mit vollem Entsetzen diese scheiss Übersetzung mir angehört.

But please could you give me a good translation of this song. Best wishes from a German Angler

  • who is adollfs ss? Dont you mean who are Adolf's SS?

  • Never forget.

  • never thought i would say this but kieran sung this one way better.

  • omg its so touching...

I am a german and i'm a fully celtic supporter! me and my country stand complete behind your nation and all of your objectives for PEACE, reunification and FREEDOM!

im still young..but for the future...i set myself a big goal..

I WILL fight for you and do anything what i can do, for your country and for you irishmen.. that the centuries of crime, death and oppression, operated by britannians hand, finally find an end!!!!

"if we all stand as one"...

    tiocfaidh ar la..!!

  • Don't delude yourself, Britain's done terrible things in Ireland but, come off it, what about Germany? Hardly a country of sympathy for national liberation. I don't think the average german stands behind the cause of republicanism, unless maybe it means holiday homes in the west might stay cheap. Not to mention, wasn't it a german that got Sinn Fein banned from selling their 'sniper at work' t-shirts?!

  • sorry, you have no idea about german history. i give you some points about the german history, read about it and then talk again: Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, luther, rising of 1848 and so on...the germans nearly always were a peace- and freedomloving and a anti-imperalistic folk. 12 years hitler and some in the middle age were

  • fair enough, i won't pretend to know a lot about german history but i was talking about 20th C. politics, not 19th C. romanticism of a battle that happened in 9AD! What i was initially complaining about was people from historically well off countries pretending to understand what its like to come from a country with a history of colonisation. I tire of meeting germans (and others) in ireland who are all for the quaint dancin' irishman but who make no effort to understand of our difficult history

  • *lol*

Aside from Luke's great version of this fantastic song... i really laughted when listening to the german translator :)

I'm really curious, where the song with this translation was actually shown? I wonder, if it was some kind of TV documentation or something like that.

Has one of you any infos about this?

  • can u get rid of the damm translator o_o

    he ruins it

  • i like the fact that the translator didnt use the word 'cruel' in the voice-over.

  • It was written by Dominic Behan (younger brother of playwright Brendan Behan)...song by luke kellly here but he didnt write it

  • Luke or Bobby???

  • Luke

  • That was really annoying - with the translation, I mean (and it was not a very good translation, either). Didn't Kelly sing it without translation somewhere?

  • luke kelly is class i love this song i read the comments, all i can say is learn wat our flag means green white and orange we need to remember wat orange stands we are all one thats wat 1798 1802 and 1916 were about

  • mo chara well said... im from belfast and when i meet someone from the south in kellys cellar.. 9 out of every ten say its green white and gold ...and i have to correct them..shocking that no one in the south knows the colours of our national flag...

  • Not many of them could tell you that the colours of the flag ar uaine, bán agus flannbhuí. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar Luke Kelly - fear uasal a bhí ann.

  • Comment removed

  • do it cladagh, I wouldn't care. I like Luke Kelly and his songs. But for me it is a nice sing to hear the translation.

    Greetings from Germany

  • Why? What's the point?

  • can u hear the passion dying with the speed of a flame??? nationalist or not where is the passion that spurred on our forefathers to take arms in DEFENCE of all they held dear?

  • Good question.

  • German or not, does anyone have this beautiful rendition of Luke singing this song without someone talking through it?

  • what did "that german" spoil?

  • Its the german translation of the song. Have a nice day!

  • achso, stimmt!

  • why is that german spoiling it in the backround

  • god the conversaton you guys had 3 weeks ago was awful

i just hate the new young irish nationalists

they really are a shame, irish nationalism should never be forgotten was originally republicanism in the old sense, republicanism meant a concern for your neighbour, thankfully some people living in ireland have not forgoten that

nationalism does not need to be about hate of other nationalities but about love of an ideal of brotherhood

  • your are truely right

  • isnt this song about the bad affects of overzeal and misguided intentions?

  • As much as I wish I could agree 100% with you about nationalism I must disagree. However this is no place for this debate, thank you KO'Neill you are one of the finest.

  • Be sure to watch the new film "Hunger", its being released this week and tells it like it really was. The media tells the truth... now that is news!

  • but you do

  • and yes i know my history , and your going to become a history teacher and what history is that , were you taught about fergal o hanlon , sean south , etc i doubt it cause your goverment labeled them terriosts . have you read about the belfast pograms of 1920 to 22 i doubt , listen to the song and the last two verses , sums up the puppet free state regime ,

  • I'm insulted by your insinuation that I just blindly accept what judgement my government passes on history without thinking for myself or doing my own research. Thinking for yourself and questioning your government, that's what it means to be American, or Irish, or Scottish, or any other nationality that has had to bleed for its freedom. I'm sure my own government wouldn't hesitate to call Thomas Jeffferson a terrorist, if it suited their purposes.

    Your move, old sport.

  • otto von bismarck[1815-1898]''i want to play only the music i myself like or no music at all''best of luck with your studies let us know the conclusion you come to.'kulturkampf'

  • would you listen to music or watch films that you do not like?

this is not the begining of "kulturkampf", it is just hte individuality of everyone.

  • i wasn't talking to you

  • but you do

  • typical free state cunt , sits on his pc and makes smart comments prob wudnt know who fergal o hanlon was then again he was prob taught that he was a terrorist by his free state scum leaders , like the song says the triators who sold out the patroit game .

  • this is to all the guys, who are not shure about, if it is german or not:

    IT IS GERMAN

i know it for shure, because i am german

    slan

  • Typical Anglo-Saxon comment.

    You fail.

  • ever seen a medal from the war of independence?don't think so....my grandfather fought the brits...for what we are now ruled from brussels,we've sold enough of this country to be but strangers in it,are you irish?catholic r church of ireland?im don't practice any religion because they were imposed on the ancient celts.think you know history?

  • "are you irish?"

German/Irish, actually, and about an eighth Choctaw, so a typical North American mulatto. I'm proud of where I come from, and I don't particularly care for people who make fun of any one of the three.

    "catholic r church of ireland?"

What in the fuck is that supposed to mean? Please learn to speak English.

    "my grandfather fought the brits..."

Answer me this: What in the Hell does that have to do with you insulting all Germans. Another question: did YOU fight?

  • (sorry for the multiple comments; I ran out of characters)

    "think you know history?"

Yeah, actually. I know quite a bit about history. I'm aspiring to be a history teacher, in fact.

I'm basing my argument on the assumption that you're an adult, but based on your knowledge of grammar and your typing ability, there's a chance you're a child.

Your move, old sport. Your move.

  • Well, stop speaking, reading or writing English!

And learn a bit more history.

The celts were not the first humans in Ireland.

  • It's great that there's a translation in German - take it handy Brother. Wir sind alle auf dem eine strasse.

  • do you know just anything about germany????!!!

  • I'd say he doesn't.

  • this song is about the free stae scum who sold out the 6 counties.

  • I'd never seen it that way. I thought Behan was lamenting the hatred that was fostered in young people that led to their spending years in gaol or losing their lives - over something as abstract and irrelevant as a government. I think O'Hanlon is supposed to be a hate-filled parody.

  • I would tend to aggree with your explaination !

  • if it meant getting rid of half wits like your good self....it was probably worth it...

  • fergel o hanolan was killed along side sean south (not from limrick as depicted in the song ''sean south'' he was actualy from what was known as ''sackville street'' in an attack on the british dureing the border campign of the 50's.

  • Sean south was from limerick, but he wasnt from garryowen

  • Great song, sung by the best. Yes it is good to hear the full version. It tells us the obvious, Luke was indeed, a good honest republican. In a political sense of course. Modern Republicanism would have made him sick. Democracy is the only way Ireland will be restored as a nation, I think Luke knew that but God he loved singing the old rebel tunes..

  • Thanks for telling me about that.

I'm wondering, why is there a German translation?

  • Are you sure it's german?... could be gaelic maybe? Im not really sure though.

But that would make more sense...

  • Its German, i'm no expert but I take German at school. Wish it was Gaelic! Beautiful song by a man who shall never be forgotten. Saoirse!

  • I realized it was German after about the second verse, haha. And I agree he will never be fogotten, his music will carry on.

  • no definatly german, irish music is very popular in germany, russia, actualy, all over europe, you wouldent think it, but it is.

  • Never heard this version before.

I don't recognize some of the people they mentioned in the verse that says about a half free island.

  • John Bull is just a common name for Britain a bit like "Uncle Sam" means America

De Valera was an anti treaty politician who went into government in the Republic of Ireland after the civil war, the gov was seen as illegitemate by anti treaty IRA- thats why they say he is greatly to blame.

The song itself is about Fergal O'Hanlon

  • De Valera was a sly fox. He knew that home rule for the whole 32 wasn't on the cards, so he sent Michael Collins and Co to the Treaty negotiations. Thus he didn't get the blame for partition, even though he knew that a slice off a cut load is better than no bread.
