  • @ ghairraigh.thanx for the info.very interesting.that was some recomendation from ray eh;things turned out pretty good.oscar sure had the best when it came to bass players. i also think our own sir george shearing kept good company in bassists.again many thanks.

  • @exjazzbassbaz You must be a fan of the many Oscar Peterson CDs he made with George Mraz for MPS Records in the the early '70's, especially "Another Day" and "Walkin' the Line", later reissued on one CD. The first Oscar Peterson album I bought was "Another Day", which I found as a $4 cut-out at the local hippy record store in my university days in 1973. I remember being blown away by the first tune "Blues For Martha" and the whole album remains my favorite OP recording today!

  • @exjazzbassbaz By the way, concerning the below post, the last album Oscar made for MPS was "Great Connection" which was also the first album Oscar made with NHOP. It was recorded soon after OP hired NHOP to sub for George Mraz for several concerts behind the Iron Curtain, again, at Ray Brown's recommendation. NHOP pretty much stayed with Oscar for the rest of his life. Maybe "Great Connection" is my favorite. All MPS stuff reissued 4 yrs ago as "OP 80th B-day" Re-masters- Great!

  • @exjazzbassbaz George Shearing had plenty of talented bassists, including my nearby-home town guy Brian Torff who was from Blue Island, just outside Chicago.

  • @exjazzbassbaz Shearing story: "The Maitre D' at the London House in Chicago always worried when I had a few cocktails while working there. I told him 'Don't worry- I'm always blind!'"

  • @exjazzbassbaz Brian Torff (see below) was a very strong walker on bass, excellent in groups with no drummer. I first saw him with the Diz Disley Trio backing Stephane Grappelli in '72.

  • george mraz is probably the best bass walker around.lovely solid sound.he can really lay it down.great swinging track.many thanks..

  • @exjazzbassbaz Yeah, great swinger. He couldn't return to Czechoslovakia with Oscar for a gig because he would have been jailed as a defector. O.P. called Ray Brown to get a recommendation for a sub and Ray told him the only guy in Europe who migtht be able to keep up with him was Nils-Henning Oersted Petersen!
