  • "It's raining cats and dogs" also deals with dead animals. :( Way back when people used to throw their small pets in the gutters when they died and when it rained heavily the cats and dogs would be carried downstream. Hence, the people started to say that it was raining cats and dogs.

    I recently looked up the origins of the last two idioms. From what I read (somewhere on the internet) is that the reason why we say "The cat's out of the bag" is because a few hundred years ago people used to scam others by selling them a dead cat instead of the animal they thought they were buying, maybe like a chicken or a coon? I'm not sure. So, it was a "secret" that the cat was in the bag.
