They need to do something about the JFK controllers. An accident is going to happen because of the douchiness of these guys.
Yes, of course Air China is not going to be speaking like Noel Coward. It's the controllers job to get his intentions across, not ridicule and mock the guy.
@headhunterke All pilots must have an excellent level of English. The problem is not the level of English they speak. It is the accents of the world. But i get your point. I work in Thailand from Suvarnbhumi and it is so international. Indian, Chinese, Japenese, Thai etc and it can be very hard because Towers speak English but with their accent, then indian with their accent etc.
@tomcat514: 13 isn't bad luck in Chinese culture. Numbers ending in 4 are, such as 14 or 24, because they sound like "to die 10 times over" and "easy to die" respectively in Cantonese. Even in Mandarin, the number 4 isn't a "fortuitous number" for the same reason. On the other hand, 6 (sounds like "fortune" in Cantonese) and 8 (sounds like "to profit" in Cantonese) are fortuitous, so 666 (!) and 888 are favored numbers in Chinese culture. FYI.
This is outright wrong and crazy to allow these pilots into any air space. No I dont care what anyone says, this pilot should not be allowed to fly anywhere.
@chinaispro You must know the English language to become a pilot. English is the international language of aviation. You can not become a licensed pilot without knowing English and passing a written and oral test of English if English isn't your first language. The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) mandated the use of English in all of civil aeronautics in an effort to make every airport in the world accessible to every pilot in the world.
@GPMSharpCommand Southern, air china and eastern airlines are rated higher than american airlines and delta and most american airlines, Remember that
A lot of foreign speakers, not just Chinese, only pick up the nouns and verbs. They think that they understand. This example illustrates the need for understanding grammar as well.
If some Chinese dude can't even speak the English language, how is he a pilot and why in gods name is he flying into one of the busiest airports in the world!?
@chinaispro Obviously not but if your job has you flying between Shanghai and New York City you would think you would know both languages. Instances like this are real and could cause real people to lose their lives. Airport Operations and Flying are not games to be played.
@GPMSharpCommand I'm calling you on your bullshit, you're lying. State specifically - WHICH COUNTRIES regulatory authorities have banned China Southern Airlines from operating there? China Southern employ international flight crew from all around the world, and have legal representation in every country they fly to (ever heard of "libel"?). You've made some specific allegations against China Southern Airlines. Back them up or admit you're lying and retract your statement.
Training at AirSafety these pilots sign 99 year contracts to work for shenzen airlines and this is exactly how they fly/talk. Its not safe and they shouldnt be allowed to fly in controlled airspace until english is their second language. This is absolutely embarrasing for the Chinese and you can see the potential for disaster.
No disrespect but English is the aviation language of the world. Its stated clearly by the ICAO so my true reaction to this movie other than laughing my ass off is that this pilot should not be anywhere near the cockpit until he/she can read, write, and understand the english language. That's the International law lol and thats why all ATC facilities anywhere in the world speak understandable English. I think the IP did the absolute right thing under the circumstances.
Dude! i dont agree there was NO POOR ATC communication at all. its just english. Either you know it or you don't. I'm Brazilian and I have my ICAO 6 level. i would never be tricked into a situation like that. Air china is sole responsible for putting in their pits, pilots that fly international with very poor english rating. In my humble opinion atc states clearly several times his order in a way that even a kid that speaks reasonable english can understand. I feel sorry for those guys, really.
i know it's hard for them to learn english but that's some bad english i think he didn't even understand what to do.. how can they be allowed to fly to the US :P
china has all kind of evil things, so many death camp, secret police, etc etc,,,,,,,china is most hell place in the world, communist kill their against people without any permission necessary, chinese communist party killed historical amount of people, china is perfectly lawless zone for anythings
He says 'HAVE they cleared you to the ramp?', which he repeats several times, as well as saying that IT'S A QUESTION, INTERROGATIVE, several times. Not knowing English is inexcusable for ALL international pilots, no matter what anyone says. Chinese pilots' poor command of English is, unfortunately, legendary. No excuses here. American pilots can only 'make dicks of themselves' in China if the Chinese ATC speak poor English.
@Kamadev888 Actually, no. American pilots are renowned for using casual slang on the radio when talking to ATC who have no idea what they're trying to say. My whole point is that you can't just point the finger in this case and say the blame is entirely on AC's PNF - it isn't. As an industry, worldwide, including the US, we all have a long way to go before we can claim Tenerife wont happen again. The US doesn't have some kind of exclusive on good radio practice, there are problems everywhere.
@toranamunter Yes, you've got a point. Still, the real issue here was the AC pilot and US ATC. US ATC was very clear, and they repeated themselves several times. AC pilots are renowned for not getting high-level English certificates and not knowing good, practical English. I can see what level they're at since I'm an English teacher myself. This lack of practical knowledge might be excusable for a cook or a waiter, but is very dangerous in flight situations.
In the above example, instead of screaming the same question at the pilot multiple times, has the ATC considered rephrasing the question using simpler words? Just as an example, "ramp" is known as "apron" in most ICAO countries (it even says "apron advisory" on Jeppesen charts which many international carriers use). Even people from UK may have a hard time understanding North American English terms – e.g. most "fries" are actually "chips" (as in fish & chips), "chips" are called "crisps". 2/2
While I agree that the air crews involved in these incidents should be more proficient in the English language, ATC must bear part of the blame too. All too often, the ATC non-standard phraseology. They also seem to not understand that many FAA phraseology/procedures are not ICAO compliant. Put thick American accent (many ESL instruction in non-English speaking countries use UK pronunciation) on top of it all, problems occur. 1/2
How do they come up with these answers? Seriously, how can a trained pilot not understand a question and then even come up with an answer totally unrelated to it, consisting of several fictional clearances that were not even mentioned?
@teamevangelista That's because when people are yeiling with you they're speaking slower, with lower bass and clearer, thus you can understand it better.
"OK, they had cleared you into the ramp?" - dangerous non-standard phraseology, and especially risky saying this to a foreigner. If a ramp accident occurred following this "question phrased as a statement" then poor ATC standard would be determined as a major causal factor from NTSBs end... It should be noted that American pilots also make dicks of themselves in China sometimes. Cross cultural communication is often a threat so strict radio discipline must be maintained by both sides!
@toranamunter Really? So what would you suggest as "standard phraseology" to ask whether a plane has been cleared to the ramp? There isn't any prescribed in the AIM or 7110.65, so a concise plain language question is permissible. However, what IS in both, along with ICAO and IATA guidelines, is the necessity to be able to communicate clearly in English with air traffic control anywhere in the world.
"Dangerous" phraseology? "Major causal factor"? You really don't know what you're talking about.
@Ihdc1 English is the international language of aviation. ICAO is English. If you want to be a pilot and fly internationally, ESPECIALLY to the US - you MUST have a decent command of the english language.
@lhdc1 What kind of English are you referring to? UK English? American English? Canadian English? Australian English? New Zealand English? A former RAF instructor once told me, when he came to Canada from the UK 20 years ago, even he had trouble understanding Canadian terms and slangs. A breakdown of how spoken communication is understood: 55% from facial expressions/body language, 38% from tone of voice, only 7% from words themselves. Does the ATC's tone actually promote understanding?
@744PIC Yeah, English is HARD language to learn especially for someone that doesn't use out alphabet. His tone isn't the best but I can understand his frustration. While I'm not the one to determined what English is to be spoken it is dependent on where in the world you are. I did my flight training at a big box flight school where we had Chinese training there (oops I just gave up where I went, don't go there. over priced) and they were almost fluent when they left. :)
It's totally appropriate that the pilots are pissing him off. What if they take a wrong turn at a taxiway and ram straight into another plane? Then there'll be casualties and tons of damage to pay for, which controller DOESN'T want.
@jt733 Wow I'm sorry to hear that--I do think he's clear in his communication with pilots, as opposed to some others who are sometimes more muffled. How do you know all this?
The guy is kinda a dick anyway- He's a true New Yorker, so a bit of a dick comes with birth, he's lived there all his life, so he's gathered decades worth of dick-ness, and he's probably never had a true vacation, so he's got plenty of dick pent up! But I agree the asian carriers are the funniest when it comes to radio communications!
this is dangerous, the chinese guy needs to learn english... but anyway why are we in 2010 and still the radio communications have such a shitty noise in first place?
@IronPump89 because they use voice band (200~3300 Hz) in radio equipment to reserve bandwidth. if you were to utilize the full audible spectrum (20 ~20kHz) you'd need very powerful transmitters in the aircraft to be able to transmit while on air.
@c0unterph0bia Which kind of English shall we adopt? UK? American? Canadian? Australian? New Zealand? Have I missed any other dialects?! Try going to a shop in UK and ask for a pair of boots, or order a bag of chips .. see what kind of reaction you will get!! ;)
@744PIC Even in English, there will always be slang and dialects native to specific locals. What's amazing is that people who speak English in America can still effectively communicate with speakers of Australian English, despite that they both live on opposite sides of the planet. Visit China and travel to Shanghai with someone from Beijing. When you see two people who live just 9 hours away from each other be unable to communicate using the same language, you'll know why I picked English :)
@c0unterph0bia Actually that's already being done except for the metric part, every country uses feet for altitude except for Russia and every country adopted English but they are free to speak the nation's language as well.
@c0unterph0bia - The rest of the world does speak English and all sciences are tought in metric. Only dick countries like France and Germany refuse to speak English (though they know it but use it as last resort).
I completely agree that this pilot's English is way below standard, but standard phraseology exists for a reason too. Once the guy misunderstood the original clearance (for which there is no excuse) the controller switched to conversational English, and got mad when the pilot responded to the standard phraseology words he heard. It's a lesson for ATC that when you KNOW someone can't understand you, go back to the basics.
hahaaha have you been cleared into the ramp??? OK CLEARED TO THE RAMP!!! hahahaa noooooooooo that was a questionnnn haha pretty funny rite....feel bad for the chinese pilot and NO they shouldnt get an asian controller the whole world just needs to learn english thats all
People don't understand how hard it is to communicate with ATC in the first place. There are a lot of things that have to be said in a certain way to avoid confusion. Even flying to the UK has a completely different terminology. Someone from China or any other non-English speaking country will have an even harder time understanding what is being said. Go to China and try to speak and understand their language before you say they are stupid and shouldn't fly. Obviously, they had training to fly.
@PinkFloydian21 Any flight into or between any US airport requires operation of the aircraft and communication in accordance with 14CFR which mandates communication in English and adherence to standard phraseology. The Airman's Information Manual contains that standard phraseology, which ATC was clearly speaking. The fault is with the pilot 100%, not ATC/Gnd/Clnc. When flying outside the US, ICAO rules dictate standard communication protocols as well. All pilots are required to adhere to these
Simple too fast for a foreign language pilot...I know that some airport are very busy and the atc need to speak fast but i think that is not easy to take note of all the instruction they give to you :) Anyway...Great patience from ATC.The China pilot is cleary confused...
Does this remind anyone that scene from Rush Hour, "do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?!" In Chinese, they don't ask questions with have, has, or had. I think that's why the pilots were so damn confused. But still, they need to improve their English proficiency. I wonder how they communicate with ground people who have strong accent if they can't understand the American English accent.
Sometimes I go on youtube and laugh and sometimes I go on youtube any get scared. Right know both just happened. I am not usually going from china to JFK but if I do I am gunna be worried! If you cant comprehend the universal language of flying(ENGLISH) then you are not suppose to fly. And come on, there schools teach them english like the schools here in the U.S. do. They have english class like us. They must have failled. Also they used too many big words like nowember :D
@thekidzcorner Well, it takes more than just going to classes to be proficient in a new language. You really have to practice a lot. With that said, this "conversation" between Air China and JFK Ground is just scary. The pilot needs to put in extra effort to improve his English.
Those Japs sounded clueless. Proficiency in the English (universal) language should be a prerequisite to commercial flying. A miscommunication could be fatal.
Why English? Above Italy everyone speaks Italian, above South-America everyone speaks Spanish, ever tried flawless communication in anything other then French above France or the Middle-East?
On the other hand, English is extremely simple, a babylanguage, so easily learned.
Lol! That's great!

JFK controler seems having a bad day.. he should calm down a bit.. after all he is ATC, responsible for people's lifes..
HotDog12ist 1 year ago
@HotDog12ist

IronPump89 1 year ago
@IronPump89 because they use voice band (200~3300 Hz) in radio equipment to reserve bandwidth. if you were to utilize the full audible spectrum (20 ~20kHz) you'd need very powerful transmitters in the aircraft to be able to transmit while on air.
rajithaify 5 months ago
If you're a pilot, you need to speak English very well. This is very very dramatic English!!

Air China is worst then American Based airlines. For 12+ hour flight going from JFK- Beijing they don't even have TV's in the seat back....

@CathayGuy Many american airlines dont have TV`s in their back...

@Pvjinflight Yeah but for domestic it's no problem but, for international travel they should have TV's.

We should just adopt metric, and the rest of the world should adopt English... now wouldn't that be sensible!
c0unterph0bia 1 year ago 22
@c0unterph0bia Which kind of English shall we adopt? UK? American? Canadian? Australian? New Zealand? Have I missed any other dialects?! Try going to a shop in UK and ask for a pair of boots, or order a bag of chips .. see what kind of reaction you will get!! ;)
744PIC 10 months ago
@744PIC Even in English, there will always be slang and dialects native to specific locals. What's amazing is that people who speak English in America can still effectively communicate with speakers of Australian English, despite that they both live on opposite sides of the planet. Visit China and travel to Shanghai with someone from Beijing. When you see two people who live just 9 hours away from each other be unable to communicate using the same language, you'll know why I picked English :)
c0unterph0bia 10 months ago
@c0unterph0bia Actually that's already being done except for the metric part, every country uses feet for altitude except for Russia and every country adopted English but they are free to speak the nation's language as well.
999lifegoes 7 months ago 2
@c0unterph0bia - The rest of the world does speak English and all sciences are tought in metric. Only dick countries like France and Germany refuse to speak English (though they know it but use it as last resort).
AtlRacerBoyz 6 months ago
I completely agree that this pilot's English is way below standard, but standard phraseology exists for a reason too. Once the guy misunderstood the original clearance (for which there is no excuse) the controller switched to conversational English, and got mad when the pilot responded to the standard phraseology words he heard. It's a lesson for ATC that when you KNOW someone can't understand you, go back to the basics.
That said, I won't be flying CA any time soon.

PinkFloydian21 1 year ago 3
@PinkFloydian21 icao dictates that ALL pilots from an english speaking country or otherwise must read, write, and speak the english language
equlibrium06 1 year ago
@PinkFloydian21 Any flight into or between any US airport requires operation of the aircraft and communication in accordance with 14CFR which mandates communication in English and adherence to standard phraseology. The Airman's Information Manual contains that standard phraseology, which ATC was clearly speaking. The fault is with the pilot 100%, not ATC/Gnd/Clnc. When flying outside the US, ICAO rules dictate standard communication protocols as well. All pilots are required to adhere to these

No american pilot has to learn a second language just for fly an airplane! So stop to curse on the other nations ppl!
Nevertheless, every international pilot should talk and understand well english.

Also they used too many big words like nowember :D
thekidzcorner 2 years ago
@thekidzcorner Well, it takes more than just going to classes to be proficient in a new language. You really have to practice a lot. With that said, this "conversation" between Air China and JFK Ground is just scary. The pilot needs to put in extra effort to improve his English.
helsinkisuomi 1 year ago
Those Japs sounded clueless. Proficiency in the English (universal) language should be a prerequisite to commercial flying. A miscommunication could be fatal.
ylekiot43 2 years ago
Why English? Above Italy everyone speaks Italian, above South-America everyone speaks Spanish, ever tried flawless communication in anything other then French above France or the Middle-East?
On the other hand, English is extremely simple, a babylanguage, so easily learned.
