  • How does the ahb1 and ahb3 compare? I love my ahb1, would like to try the 3 but i don't like the S logo

  • I can tell from your face you prefer the blackouts?

    So do I ;-)

  • What is the DC resistance of those Suhr pickups?

  • @bobgilles1 DC Resistance: 17.5K ohms for the bridge position, 9K ohms for the neck position, 4-conductor wire

  • whars the song at 1.38

  • @jesterraj Meanstreak by Y&T

  • If you wanna play only Metal music maybe the Blackout is better but if you want something more bluesy hard rock the Suhr is the best !

  • Hi mark, grat video as usual, what camera and editor did you use?

  • I always make my own. Based on a 500ms delay and a plate reverb both low in the mix.

  • mark what preset did you use on the g-major for this demo

  • It's hair-rific!

  • This is a really cool video, escpecially to show us how much the pickups are important to create a sound. Both are great but my choice goes to the SD Blackouts (more definition, "metal" style, the best to cut in the mix). The Doug Aldrich is more hard-rockish for me.

Great riffs all along the video!

  • I prefer the Aldrich way over tha AHB3, more crunchy, dinamic, more alive.

  • great video Mark, done the way a proper shootout should be. Personally I thought both sounded great, but the Suhrs edged it for me, they just sounded slight more organic to my ears

  • Y&T riff ftw! :)

  • Great video. Now I'm convinced the Aldrich's are not for me. They're muffled and compressed.

  • @schuey999 Remember my amp was dialed in for the Blackouits NOT the Aldrich's. I am going to do another with the amp dialed in for the passives :)

    Mark

  • For high gain I actually like the Blackouts slightly better, though only by a slight margin. They seem to be a bit fuller in the low end, and crisper in the highs. On the clean settings it's not even a contest. The Aldrichs sound sooo much better than the Blackouts. So overall the Aldrichs win :-)

Btw, John should be paying you commission.. You're the reason I've bought a Suhr Modern (you and Andy Wood), a Riot, and KokoBoost and a CAA OD100..

Next time I'm in Canada I'm buying you a few beers

  • i have tried owned all the 3 blackout generations and the aldrich pickups.

    they alll give different things.

i sold the aldrichs again because they have no attack compared to the blackouts.

imo there are better passives for heavy distortion tones.

of the blkacouts i like the 2`s the most. they are dark and massive.

  • Aldrich wins in every way.

  • The Blackouts have much less character to my ears.

The Suhr's are deep, yet have tonnes of kick.

  • Doug FTW!

  • Nice vid as always Mark. To me, the Blackouts have a bit more kick (and are just SOOO much better sounding than anything EMG have ever produced) but the Suhrs sound much more organic. On the clean sounds, there's no comparison - Suhr wins hands down. You've made the right choice.

  • @VoyagerProject Do you try the newest EMG X Series?

  • Mark have ever tried the WCR's? I have 3 sets in some of my guitars , Fillmores in a Les Paul, Dark Burst's in another and a set of custom Dark Burtst in one my PRS.

The SUHR pups sounded amazing. I actually just ordered a Suhr riot based on your demo of them.

  • The Blackouts have better note defintion, when you "chunk" on power chords. The Suhr's, is a bit muddy. The Suhr's sound good, but comes in second, when you want to "crunch".

  • @taztherocker I agree. Suhr's are muddy, a little brittle sounding. Blackouts are better!

  • Hey Mark,

Great Job as usual!! To me, the black outs sound more vivid, the Aldrich PU's a bit more honky in the mids and a touch more bottom. Both great tones, just a matter of personal taste. In this instance I like the black outs, as they are more "in your face"...

  • Aldrich pups sound much more natural.

  • They both sound awesome as usual Mark! Thank you for doing this. I am also going from actives to passives now.

  • Sh

Blackouts without a doubt. Plus I think the Suhr w bo's is your voice!

  • Y&T!! Nice!

Both are cool sounding pickups in their own way. Whoever said the Blackout has more bottom end is crazy, the Aldrich is massive in the lows and low mids, enough to rattle fillings. The Blackout is a bit more aggressive in the upper mids and highs and has more bite. The attack is also faster on the Blackout, while the Aldrich is more chewy, much like a finely seared filet mignon. And now I've made myself hungry.

  • I have the Aldrich humbuckers in my new Modern and love them, have to say though the high end is impressive with the AHB 3's

  • Duncan Ahb3, is much better !! great sound..

  • The Suhr sounds better

  • do you Aldrich need to be F-spaced? I have a Ibanez 540R I want to put them in, Thanks

  • Good choice, I always loved your tone but much prefer the suhr pickups.

  • For those settings, I preferred the blackouts. They weren't as full, but definitely more articulate with a ton of edge and presence. I tend to like a lot of presence though. I'm sure that if you made the settings for the Aldrich's then compared that to the Blackouts, people would find different things they liked about each.

  • Both of them sound killer. The Ahldrich had a slighty fatter tone and bottom end, but was missing a little of the highs that the SD delivered. Either one, you can't go wrong.

Oh, and props for playing Y&T's Meanstreak!!

  • the aldrich sounds much more organic.I think passive pick ups like EMG and others alike just sound lifeless..

  • I prefer the Aldrichs, although i'm not a fan of actives really. I think the Alrichs sound more open, whereas the actives sound more compressed. A matter of taste.

  • ADD A TOUCH OF HIGH FOR THE DOUG ALDRICH AND YOUR THERE,BOTH SOUND AWESOME HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG EITHER WAY..NICE AS ALWAYS.

  • I like the suhr better. I just got mine in the mail today along with a spc control. Cant wait to install them in the strat I custom built.

  • The Aldrich pickups have better cut and are probably better in a mix. However for flat out growl and tone I prefer the Blackouts.

  • The Duncans had more low end it seemed but the Aldrich's sounded more open, Are you gonna change the ones in your PRS as well

  • I like the Blackouts better. Seem a bit more full.

  • Blackouts are more my taste personally..
