Shadowmere can die :( only by your own hand! if you kill shadowmere, there is a way to take shadowmere back!! i found in google this method, you need to know the exactly location of shadowmere (obviously dead) then you go to any city like whiterun or solicitude and you need to wait 10 day (10 time 24 hours), then you go to the location of the dead horse and tadaaaa!!! shadowmere is a live!!! >:D

Shadowmere can die and you're correct at that, but only at fault of the player (i.e falling off of a cliff) otherwise he's invincible in combat and a great asset when fighting dragons because he distracts them. XD

as long as you don't mod or put armor on it it's deemed as an essential character and can't die. it can be knocked out and will come back after a short time. once you alter it, it breaks the 'essential' status.
