So basically if you start something you're not sure of, you just do it on a new layer? I notice you virtually never flatten them. Does your computer ever lag from lack of RAM?

never ran out of ram as i use 8GB but if i work on a very large image i simply save it as a new file then flatten.

It's not about unsure, i just made it a habit to paint each new progress on a new layer, this way i can always go back, turn it off and see if i liked the progress.

It is always best to work on layers, If you paint a image with a couple characters, having them and all other elements on different layers will make changes and adjustments easier.
