  • Rabbit was my boy. I play tenor, but when I play I try to be Rabbit.

  • Thank you photonsoup for posting this classic that can't be duplicated, may it last forever in these archived pages. Thanks again.

  • Only the measuring stick for all saxophone players. Baseball has Babe Ruth. Basketball has Michael Jordan. Saxophone has Johnny Hodges. What a tone. Often imitated, never duplicated. He never sold out. Always remained true to himself.

  • this is the best version ever of this song

  • I had goosebumps the whole song, but at 2:05 I thought my skin was going to jump off my body. This man is my idol.

  • Fuck.

Can it be something better than this?

I mean despite all this moaning on today's music, you just can't get better than this saxophone lamenting about broken heart with Duke's piano on the background...

    This is musical perfection!

  • Sensational.TY photonsoup for posting.

  • One of a kind sound. This is real beauty.

  • For me as a clarinetist, Johnny Hodges and Willie Smith were the only reasons to bother with alto seriously.

  • what year was this recording?

  • to do that on an alto and be so deep and smooth…amazing

  • @johngoo343 Bird ??

  • @Jazzman555 agreed, but Hodges had that smooth butter tone that was unique to no one else.

  • Nobody sounded like Johnny Hodges. A master of the alto.

  • It is the first time I hear an alto sax sound that good.

  • i may be 17 but its good to hear some of the classics

  • Mind Blowin'!!! What can I say? I've heard Hodges play that song at least 200 times. Every time I hear it, I'm ALWAYS overwhelmed at the the artistry that produced that sound. In this song, Hodges elevates the blues in a manner whereby they're unrecognizable: it's simply heavenly. You're just blown away by the sound; it's like stepping into a hurricane. What's even more phenomenal, he's playing the dam thing "LIVE." The sound is so beautiful it's ... almost spiritual. Can I get an amen!

  • @Alvin276 amen bother

  • @Alvin276 AMEN !!! ;) Truly beautiful .........as you say mind blowin.

  • @Alvin276 amen, Alvin! Johnny Hodges has been my favourite soloist since I stumbled across him in the 70s. Thanks to everyone for sharing their sound/film clips on YouTube!

  • Just so good

  • Awesome. One of the greatest solo performances of this lovely tune.

  • Awesome

  • Can anyone tell me what concert or album this song is on ? This is my favorite version of this song. I had it on a Italian bootleg cassette I bought in the 80's. It had a version of West Indian Pancake that I need to have too. Thanks very much for posting.

  • @badmf666 You can find it on the album The Popular Duke Ellington, track 2. It's fantastic, isn't it?

  • Johnny Hodge's live's

  • Johnny Hodges was the master of this smooth style of alto playing. He is often imitated, but he is the real thing.

One of the greatest alto players of all time.

  • Best Jazz band ever with one of the best soloists in a long list of excelent players.

  • There`s no music like this today. And that aint good..
