yea ur totally right, no better words to describe the concept. theres no multi cylinder class (that i know of) yet... aprilia is like the first one (ive seen) that came out with the 2 cylinder engine...im not sure if they even make dirt bikes with 2 cylinders? ive only seen supermotards...never full on trail bikes. by then again im not a big dirt guy, ive owned a wr250 and a yz250 but they were all supermoto, and now i have a hypermotard which is more of a 'tank' than a SM lol

Supermoto = dirtbike with street tires. The 990 is an adventure bike (not a dirtbike) with street tires. Those are all naked bikes, but none of them are supermotos.

I used to have a ktm 640 and didnt think it was quick enough so am considering the 990. is it not a good alternative for someone who doesnt want a sports bike but wants a bit more top end than a 640.?

@RatRaper Traditionally, yes, too big. I commute to work every day, and like mountain blasts on the weekend. What bike did i just buy???? 2010 KTM 990 SM R.  It does what i need it too, and really, is just about the best fun you can have with your pants on. Commuting on any "Real" Supermoto (FS570 Etc) would be fun.......... For about a week. A little too narrow focussed for most people.

The 690SMC is still light and agile enough to be a true supermoto. The bikes in this video are large and in a different class, they can't jump or stunt or do anything. I don't consider them to be be proper motards, and I find them to be annoying and pointless motorcycles. Is that a contradiction?

Those bikes looks far too big to be thrown around a SuMo track - luckily the testers were just ambling round.

The Superduke is king IMO, but surely the 'supermoto' is just a cursory label with a bike of that size!

Plus, if they were going to go 'foot down', they could have worn some proper boots; come on bike journos, sort it out!

The results of their 'test' would not influence my purchase decision (won't be buying the rag on Wednesday) :(

I read someone characterize them as standards with slightly longer suspension travel, that's all. The really fast motards are around 500cc and smaller.

The 530 is 510cc, so it would qualify for "around 500cc and smaller" :P Don't hold the 500cc as written in stone. Husky has the 570cc sm610, and then there's the 690smc.

it's kind of six of one half dozen of the other, isn't it? I mean the DRZ400SM is supposedly a supermoto but it's built on the DRZ dirt version.  There's a lot of grey. The only difference that I've seen is that some bikes are actually supermotos/motards, and some are more just styled that way, like these.
