I looked under there, and the diff bushing is worn beyond belief. Somehow the bolt hasnt snapped. Its also an e36 M3, and subframe reinforcements come pre-installed. I highly doubt anything has ripped under there. If it has, it will be one of the first documented failures of this area.
AKG poly subframe bushings, new balljoints, and new diff bushings are being installed this week. Hopefully this fixes the problem.
I had a similar issue with my BMW e36, i found the problem to be that the tail shaft was running on a guard due to the actual subframe housing being cracked the subframe mounting points at top towards the front of my diff where the diff meets the tail shaft had completely snapped causing the diff to rock and tail shaft to lower and grind...
Did replacing all the bushes stop the clunk?

Same problem I had, and same reason my E36 is going to the scrap yard! Bet your subframe is ripped off the frame just like mine was!!!
