I think Utah may go blue a few times this century. If a serious crisis comes about and the Democratic platforms involve stuff that appeal to Utahns (eg.: The Great Depression, Utah voted for the Democrat 5 elections in a row.) and the Democrats do enough campaigning, I believe Utah could go blue.
But under normal circumstances, it will be very difficult for a Democrat to carry Utah.
That was at a time when neither parties supported abortion rights. Utah will continue to be Republican because the Republican Party is doctrinally superior to the Democratic Party.
This video surely was overblown. Utah remained one of the reddest states. It gave McCain his 3rd largest margin behind Wyoming and Oklahoma.
