In my class they had 3 veterans stand up and explain what is was we were getting into. Told us if we didn't like the language, there is the door, if we got our feelings hurt easily, this was not the job for us, and if we were not willing to lay our life down for a complete stranger, not knowing anything about them, not to waste their time. That was the nice way they said it.

My father was a firefighter for 35 years here in Chicago. He has told me and my sister that while the writers of the show have taken some liberty with what they say and do in the show. He would've killed to have a veteran stand in front of the class and tell him what it was really like. He wishes that they did that now, but due to a majority of houses going union, like his did after he retired, and all of the sensitivity training that they need to take, he doubts it will ever happen.
