In his Washington Post "On Faith" forum column this week, Michael Otterson, Public Affairs managing director of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints explains that "countless Christians have wondered what it was truly like, not only on that most holy of nights, but later in Jesus Christ's life."
A few years ago the Church began including nativity scenes from various nations and cultures in its Christmas display at Temple Square. While the traditional nativity has always been a central piece of Temple Square at Christmas time, these other depictions of the crèche demonstrate the worldwide adoration for the Savior Jesus Christ.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' mormon*org website was selected as one of Interactive Media Awards (IMA) "Top Ten Websites of the Year" this week. Award judges considered more than 4,000 entries from 53 countries and all 50 U.S. states. According the IMA, 36 nominees represent the sites with the highest-scoring evaluations from among the Best in Class winners. From those 36, IMA judges select the top ten and the winners are determined by popular vote. .
There are lots of pencils; pictures of families eating dinner; families playing with a red ball; families in the living room with scriptures; families in the garden planting carrots (everyone is happy planting vegetables and getting dirty, and mother is usually wearing a work dress, and it's all very 1950s); and lots of old filmstrips that no one wants to throw away for fear of some media curse.
But in the ward, having a normal ward library meant having a normal ward librarian.
One of my first callings in the singles ward was the ward librarian, which I loved because our singles ward was made up of older, single university students at Brigham Young University who were lucky enough to meet in a real ward building and not in some chemistry lab still stinking of sulfur or ammonia.
We met in a family ward building on Grandview Hill in Provo, Utah. We were quite proud of our existence in that building.
Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be (ibid., 10:110;
@Joeybsmooth Your ancestors were probleming RAPING the slaves they own and yet you come here and find some unreliable obscure quote and try to force it on us?
@Joeybsmooth "My Ancestors have what your people would call the curse"
NONE of "my people" use that term. However, the term did originate with the EVANGELICALS and was used to justify SLAVERY, JIM CROWS and SEGREGATION. THREE things that the Mormon community did NOT participate in. Yet, you ATTACK the Mormons and give the EVANGELICALS a pass?
@Ayisiens "it was not too long ago that they removed the part about black people being a curse from the book of mormon."
You LIE. I would ask you to quote me the part in the Book of mormon that you say was removed, but since I know there was NOT such part. You would LIE and make up something. How do you sleep at night?
“Certainly the caste systems in communist countries and in India, for instance, are man made and are not based on true principles. “However, in a broad sense, CASTE SYSTEMS have their ROOT and ORIGIN in the GOSPEL itself, and when they operate according to the DIVINE DECREE, the resultant restrictions and SEGREGATION ARE RIGHT AND PROPER AND HAVE THE APPROVAL OF THE LORD.
To illustrate: Cain, Ham, and the whole negro race HAVE BEEN CURSED WITH A BLACK SKIN, the mark of Cain, so they can be identified as a CASTE APART, a people with whom the other descendants of Adam should not intermarry.”
John Taylor, 3rd LDS President concerning the abolitionist Horace Greeley after Mr. Greeley visited Utah: “... I WOULD NOT TALK TO HIM: I FELT MYSELF SUPERIOR TO SUCH A MEAN CONTEMPTIBLE CUR. I knew he was not after truth, but falsehood. “This Greeley is one of their popular characters in the East, and one that supports the stealing of NIGGERS and the underground railroad....
@majinish "Shall I tell you the LAW OF GOD in regard to the AFRICAN race? If the WHITE MAN who belongs to the CHOSEN SEED mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is DEATH ON THE SPOT. This will ALWAYS be so." LDS "Prophet" Brigham Young
@ChristianaBoone "were more valiant than others…Those who were less valiant in pre-existence and who thereby had certain spiritual restrictions imposed upon them during mortality are known to us as the negroes. Such spirits are sent to earth through the lineage of Cain, the mark put upon him for his rebellion against God and his murder of Abel being a black skin...The present status of the negro rests purely and simply on the foundation of pre-existence"
Blacks are Inferior Church leader Bruce R. McConKKKie, on the denial of equality for Africans: “NEGROES IN THIS LIFE ARE DENIED THE PRIESTHOOD; under NO circumstances can they hold this delegation of authority from the Almighty. The gospel message of salvation IS NOT CARRIED AFFIRMATIVELY TO THEM... “NEGROES ARE NOT EQUAL WITH OTHER RACES WHERE THE RECEIPT OF CERTAIN SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS ARE CONCERNED...”
Are the Mormons abolitionists? No,unless delivering the people from priestcraft, and the priests from the power of Satan, should be considered abolition. But we do not believe in setting the negroes free.
@CounterCultureLives That was according to the law of the time, and it is a commandment of God to live the law of the land. the slaves at hat time (at least those belonging to the church) were more like members of the family. All people are allowed the same privileges of the world, so they are allowed all privileges of the gospel. Besides people don't hold grudges against the US government when they were discriminatory, so why should such now invalid complaints be charged to us. All are equal?
@ChristianaBoone Why, of COURSE that was "the law at the time"!! "God's laws?? Or man's laws?? Of course, that pesky "curse" WAS "lifted" back in 1978!! Interesting!! Right at the time that "the blacks" (as Mormons refer to them) were graduating from medical schools, law schools, pharmacy schools, universities, holding commissioned officers ranks in the military, and entering the middle class in droves,(their skin was still black, but their money was green!!) heavenly father lifted the curse!!
A small replica of gold plates can cure anything from cancer to bankruptcy. You're going to see restoration, you're gon-a see miracles in your life. The price? It's free, absolutely free! " FREE' but that promise of Godly miracles comes with a earthly request. 750 of MY followers ARE turning over all worldly goods for the privilege of joining. I invite you to do the same. Before you give me everything, I feel led to ask you to prove God with a $20 offering."
and this person speak on muslim??? how dare you compare religions... since when was it GOD's work to kill thousands of innocent lives... shame on you!!
okay...i was born and raised in the LDS church...growing up my parents werent very strong members in the church, so my brothers&sisters including myself always attended the methodist, lutheran, and catholic church..jst because most of our cousins were apart of these religions!!! til this day we enjoy going to watch their programs, but we are proud to be LDS members!!! eitoobmiz i wish i can meet u in person to show u what the LDS church is all about..the name of it tells u clearly who we worship
@NLV8688 Muslims have a Jesus in their religion, as well as Buddhists, and many false religions. Simply writing Jesus on the door or on the sign in front of a building does not make one saved, or a Christian. Jesus said that it wasn't just the people who claimed Him as Lord who would be saved, but those who God's will. God's will is that we trust fully and SOLELY in His son for the salvation of our souls, not that we join a man run religious organization. Your pride may be your downfall...
@NLV8688 As soon as I saw the word "eitoobmiz" I knew what to expect underneath your comment. I've seen his anti-Christ-like comments before. He's ignorant. Just ignore him.
Are you a space alien? Your prophet Joseph Smith said that there are men living on the moon who dress like Quakers and live to be nearly 1000 years old. Since he was wrong about the moon, is it safe to trust him regarding the way to Heaven? (The Young Woman's Journal, vol. 3, p. 263-264.) Another of your prophets Brigham Young taught that the sun was inhabited. as recorded in Journal of Discourses 13:271 In these assertions where do you see prophetic insight & spiritual acuity?
I understand that many including those in high leadership positions believe they cannot leave Mormonism because it may cost them their marriage/family/social standing/business, etc. to actually gain Christ.
Extremely seldom is this control the case in churches outside of cults such as JWs & LDS. How many well meaning missionaries have been used to destroy marriages & divide families when one or more spouses\children have received the love of the Truth & exited the cult? More than you know...
@Shulamitefire First things first, are you an ex Mormon? If so, how long were you a member? Did you actually attend the church, or did you just sit in the parking lot? Is this where you received your "understanding" of the inner struggles that "many" Mormons have with leaving the church? Feel free to take your time researching on the internet the answers to my questions, I have a feeling this is where you have downloaded your font of wisdom.
@oldjeepsrule@oldjeepsrule Highly hypocritical of you it is to throw a comment inferring internet research does not count! Your own cult church of counterfeit Christianity has web sites incl. BYU & there are FARMS & FAIR, etc. I think it is evident that you fear information serving to refute Smith's spiritually suicidal schemes of sin & thus your own. The LDS church has been hemorrhaging at the Smith-stitched seams ever since the advent of the internet! I would not be surprised you run to FAIR.
@oldjeepsrule For the past 2 yrs. 11 mos. I have had almost daily extended talks with a 5th generation temple Mormon. This person is presently in process of leaving the LDS church, loving Jesus, but realizing the church is not who they claim to be. I have had personal exchange with former LDS who have left the cult of Joseph Smith including a president of the oldest stake in the country.
@oldjeepsrule Are you an ex-Muslim? If so, how long were you Muslim? Did you actually attend the mosque? Or did you just sit in the parking lot? You see your argument is weak. Neither do you have to deal in harmful drugs to know they do harm & that people struggle quitting them.
@Shulamitefire I don't have an argument, just a few important questions that you are too yellow to answer, or too weak. Funny thing, the twelve year olds in my Sunday school class will probabally forget more about Christ than you will ever know.
PS. Your descriptions of Mormons betray your ignorance. How very little you know.
@oldjeepsrule aw, you hurt my feelings, man... :-) but my identity is not defined by a church as is yours; it's defined by my relationship with Christ, so your attempt is vain.
I'm not surprised you attack my person because you feel impotent dealing with the message, maybe afraid that which you might face if you ever did in actuality receive the love of the truth & bail out of the church of Joseph Smith.
Nevertheless, I desire Christ's best for you harboring no ill feeling toward you. Selah.
This is some of what and how missionaries do work. If you want to know more talk to one. I was a missionary and everything in this video is exactly what happens all over the world in 100+ different languages. What they teach is wonderful and only improves the lives of individuals and families so LISTEN.
What am saying is the Pastor and the Eskimo story. If the Eskimo has never heard of Christianity, would he go to hell for not accepting it? If not, then why should the Pastor risk the Eskimo's eternity by revealing it to him?
That's my point. Obviously a caring god would not punish someone for being ignorant (even though that is the god we see in the old testament), but then why would a priest not allow someone to live in ignorance if it guarantees them a 'free pass'. By the way, the Eskimo himself was not the point. He merely represents someone completely ignorant of Christianity and it's teachings.
It makes perfect sense. If the eskimo had not heard of Christianity, and therefore did not worship it, would he go to hell. I think you'll find that the god of the bible is not as fair and merciful as you think (i.e. destroying a fig tree because it didn't produce fruit - in the wrong season!).
no god wouldn't send anyone to hell for not listening we believe in the three kingdoms which even the lowest kingdom which is for thieves and murderers pretty much will still be happy we don't believe in a cruel god
@10Residentevilfan True , True , True , humanbeings are more cruel to themselves and to eachother and not knowing or refusing to know is the cruelist thing anyone can inflict on ones self or to others ! I wonder how many people have been disappointed passing thru the vail to find their still here but without a body ?
it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me whosoever who call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Seriously you say this because it has happened to you? I certainly hope not. You know I can understand the stuff about polygamy or the black priest ordeal. Though those subjects to can be explained . But for you to seriously attack a subject the Church is pretty much build upon the Foundation of Charity is poorly thought out and foolish. I am living proof, of the immense Charity the LDS faith has. I was housed, well fed, and warm. But i am not the only one. Countless disaster victims know too.
But for you to seriously attack a subject the Church is pretty much build upon the Foundation of Charity is poorly thought out and foolish.
Since LDS refuses to disclose it's finances, your claims about LDS's philanthropic activities are exactly that..... unsubstantiated claims and nothing more!!
@thwbbhm14 I am Lds too , disasters come in many forms , but the greatest disasters of all stem from Ignorance = fear =hate= anger = spiritual disaster they are their own victim .
hush up you have no right talking like that about something you dont know. you have no idea what the missionaries and that Church has done for me so before you think you can be all sarcastic know that they do more good than just about any other church
"hush up you have no right talking like that about something you dont know."
Sorry, SaxDude, but it's a free country; I'm not bound by Mormon censorship!!
"blah, blah, ..so before you think you can be all sarcastic know that they do more good than just about any other church"
Sure they do!! And their financial disclosures prove it!! Of course, LDS refuses to disclose it's finances, or what percentage of their tithing revenues go toward humanitarian purposes.
listen they do a lot and pour resources in too their welfare program, which more churches should do then we wouldnt have ppl running to the gov for help, And look they have gave out their information, the Times did a spot on it around 15 or 10 yrs ago, They use money to pay for all the copies of the bible, BOM and videos they give out, also the food that they give, also it stresses service and the red cross said it depends a lot on the LDS church in emergencies
Im mormon and if you think you're helping anybody youre not!!!!!
YOU ARE ONLY SPEWING HATRED,
and if you continue... on the judgement seat god will tell you that what you said here and now you despised the ones that were "CHOSEN'' to help bring salvation to the world.... now whos trash now huh?
This isn't Spam. It's an opinion. I believe in God and I can't believe it's marked as spam. Now, the fact that alexrad1 posted it on something religious means he's looking for an argument or possibly a trolling, but it's not spam.
I am NOT Morman, so I am not sticking up for them because I am one. But I disagree, Mormans are one of the highest contibuters to charity. They are usually the first on the scences of disaters to lend help, food, clothes, anything that is needed. Contact them, and they will give you food from the Bishop's Storehouse if you need it. They are vary charitable, wrong as they migt be in doctrine.
just because they spend 2 years teaching doesn't meen they arnt charitable. The LDS church does many charity projects throughout the year. The missionaries just want to bring the gospil to thouse who may want to learn about it, i am a convert into the church and it has brought me more happiness than i could ever have dreamed of. Thats what they want to give to people, because some of us get that from the scriptures.
@CrazySingingNote If your faith is in anything but Jesus, or in addition to Jesus, then regardless of how "happy" you are, you are still lost. We are not called by Christ to join a religious system, to follow the dogma of men or to trust in man and his works, we are called to faith in Jesus. Any doctrine that denies, waters down or adds to salvation by grace through faith is false, and must be avoided. I pray you will convert to Jesus, and deny the world's churches.
armando...you are hopeless and all "THAT bullshit" has turned you into something...do u think ur purpose on earth is to try to jusdge other people's ways or to try to find yours?? And tallllplay...the last part of your comment is just wonderful, but unfortunately it is a contradiction with the first part...if u do "let go and let God" and understand that we are all imperfect...then i don't understand why u wrote the first part...
Well sir, we know that rumor to be false. The government cannot tax a religion based on anything. Also the revelation from HEAVENLY FATHER came at that point most likely because the movement inspired people to pray for equal rights. It would have come eventually.
Joseph Smith was a con artist,a murderer, and a pervert who was swiftly followed after his death by an even bigger con artist, murderer and pervert namely Brigham Young.Mormonism is nothing but a cult masquerading as a religion of christ which is an even bigger con in the first place." Study your history.
He didn't judge your history Scotts, he judged the history of your church which is completely different, he didn't call you names, he just told what we all know, Joseph Smith and Brigham Young were two really fucked up men.
I thought you had understood, but this last message you posted makes me realize how ridiculously thickheaded you are to follow your just found truth, oh well, couldn't expect much from someone who believes a racist pedophile pervert was a real prophet. I'm not wasting my time with such idiocy, have a good day, and may some day you wake up and clean your senses from that bullshit that doesn't let you think critically.
Joseph Smith was a con artist,a murderer, and a pervert who was swiftly followed after his death by an even bigger con artist, murderer and pervert namely Brigham Young.Mormonism is nothing but a cult masquerading as a religion of christ which is an even bigger con in the first place." less
For and attorney you do not seem to have read much. The Book of Abraham was proven to to be a lie. DNA proves the native Americans are not descended from lamanites. THEREFORE Joseph Smith was a liar and a con artist.
wgordon - Yeah... that did not answer my question. Where do you get your information.
That is NOT true. The Book of Abraham was proven to be true. DNA has not proven that Native Americans descened from lamanites. If you are going to make ridiculous claims that are not true, please provide your source of information.
there has been no worse time in his life, and I had to suffer for this too.
f.e. every time he went to toilette, his partner stood in front of the toilet door, taking time and said: time is over. Come out or I will tell the mission president that You...
(I am german, please excuse my awfull english)
consider living 24/7 for the church, no second to be alone, everything on Your own money...
And just what is "the gospel" according to Mormonism? It's "the Mormon gospel", not the gospel found in the Bible. The major doctrines of the Mormon gospel aren't even found in the Book of Mormon, let alone the Bible.
I used to have sex with lots of young mission men LDS Is the best, There so pent up and uptight all you have to do is so them some effection and there putty in your hands.. Trust me..
LOL i think you need help hahahha if your sleeping with missionaries, they have a job to do and they are obviously not doing their job if there wasting their time on you
Being gay and living in TEXAS I just LOVE the missionaries. Matter of fact one is now my lover and moved from SPUDville here.. we realy do love each other. Have a super holiday. It was sure NOT a waste of time for myself or him.
I am soon to be a missionary in 3 weeks, and i just have a little to say. Nothing anyone ever says about our Church will lead us astray, but it strengthens my testimony of the truthfullness of this gospel. I will go about teaching anyone who will have a open heart an open mind but we do not force our church on anyone but give them the great chance to Know the Church of Christ.
Mormons just don't get it. Their religious fanaticism makes them unable to think clearly. Mormons joined with the Nazis and the KKK to fund TV ads that were filled with BLATANT LIES. The majority of Californians were against Prop 8 a month ago. Then the Mormon-funded dishonest, lying, deceptive ads were run thousands of times a day and they deceived Californians into thinking Prop 8 was something it was not, and that is the ONLY reason it passed.
First of all, the vote no on prop 8 campaign had way more money than their opposition so they should have taken action likewise. Second, members of the church were advised by the Leaders of the church to go and vote with no specific advice as to vote for who. Third it was the members of the church in the state of California that funded the YES on Prop 8 campaign not the Church as a whole. If our church would have funded it beleive me we would raise BILLIONS to fund YES on prop 8
I have been on a mission myself and it nothing but that, serving, sharing and teaching from Jesus Christ's teachings beautiful in it's simplicity really and I will always be glad I did it. Putting away the focus on worldly things which really are temporary anyway, and focusing on the purest most simple truths we can all use that message whether you claim to believe in God or not.
Amazing! I love missionary work and helping others develop faith in Jesus Christ and his atonement! I had the wonderful opportunity to spend 2 years of my life in north west Germany serving the wonderful people there! I made tons of friends and have learned a lot from the time I spent there with them! I know that Christ lives! I know that God lives! The Gospel of Jesus Christ is such a wonderful message! Just as Gospel means... "Good News!" I am so grateful for the Church of Jesus Christ!
These folks give their time, talent and commit their lives to sharing their beliefs. I'm not even LDS but I have a TREMENDOUS respect for their willingness to "put their money where their mouths are". To ridicule or try to diminish their love of God and their Church is so low-class and ignorant. You may not believe in LDS, but I for one am very thankful they are in the world. Their decency, love of family and love of neighbors are admirable. Why the vitriol? They spread the message of God's love!
Missionaries are regalr people with a desire to teach a message that they beleive will help people who listen change their lives for the better. Success depends upon dedication to the work and LOVE, real, genuine sincere love of the people(the key and most difficult attibute to attain). When you are young you are still forming your sense of identitiy. Sometime missionary work can challenge who you think you are. I know because I was one almost twenty years ago(yes, I'm OLD!!)
No need to get defensive--Superstitious is as superstitious does. You might not be superstitious, but mormonism is.
--
As superstition is a considerable ingredient in almost all religions, even the most fanatical; there being nothing but philosophy able entirely to conquer these unaccountable terrors; hence it proceeds, that in almost every sect of religion there are priests to be found: But the stronger mixture there is of superstition, the higher is the authority of the priesthood. David Hume
johnPhilos - What you may see as harrassment may be viewed by them as "help." If you do not like their tacts then sit them down and nicely explain to them why and ask them to stop. Put yourself in their shoes.
They have been told by more than one person that we aren't interested in their message, yet they persist. I have no idea why they are camping out in our neighborhood.
john - What do you mean by "camping out in [your] neighborhood"? Are you upset b/c they are visiting others in your neighborhood? Or are they visiting you personally on a consistent basis (i.e. weekly) although you have asked them not to visit? I am interested by what you mean by "harass."
There must be someone here that likes these guys, which keeps them coming back, but I see them almost everyday, and they have not respected us when we have told them we aren't interested. Also they have followed my neighbor after she said she wasn't interested and hounded her. Also they go to the playground and talk to the kids about religion (I thought there weren't supposed to do that). If they keep it up I'll call their mission president.
So when you say they are "harassing" you, you mean that they are in your neighborhood and they talk to you? Isn't that just being "neighborly" or "friendly"? Do you think there is something wrong with talking to kids about religion? As long as they are not being inappropriate there is nothing wrong with them talking to children.
No offense, but it sounds that you are being hyper-sensitive. Perhaps you should try to be more understanding.
They won't leave my wife and kids alone because they keep trying to push their crackpot religion on us, yes by talking, after we have told them repeatedly that we aren't interested. If you think that is cool then you are pushy religious zealot too. My daughter printed off a bunch of information on their church and gave it to them and the other kids at the playground. Now they don't seem as interested talking. Lets hope it lasts. Maybe they should work on people interested in joining a cult.
JohnPhilos - Perhaps you SHOULD talk to them. It appears that you do not understand who they are or what they are doing. The missionaries are representatives of Jesus Christ. They teach the same things that Christ would teach you if he were standing before you. Your comments calling me a "pushy religious zealot" and calling my Church a "cult," evidence a disrespect for others beliefs. There is no excuse for personal attacks. I recommend that you are more open-minded and understanding of others.
I'm not interested in having my kids indoctrinated with superstitious baloney. Thanks for calling me open-minded. Perhaps you aren't as empty minded as I initially thought;)
johnPhilos -- If you were open-minded you would realize that anothers beliefs are not "supersitious baloney" simply because you do not understand them.
Missionaries do not "indcotrinate" others, they simply share what they believe and provide others with an opportunity to learn for themselves. If you don't want to listen and remain close-minded that is your choice. However, it is unfair to deprive others of the chance simply b/c you feel harrassed b/c they are in your neighborhood.
"Not superstitious" are you serious? Have you never taken inventory of all the superstition your religion embraces? I would rather teach science, and logic to my kids than teach them fairy tales as fact. Just because something gives you a warm fuzzy doesn't make it true.
Okay, john, there is no reason for you to attack my beliefs as "supersition" or "fairy tales" simply b/c you do not understand them. Please show some maturity and respect for others. Thanks.
As a former missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I appreciate this documentary to be just as it claims. This is really, honestly a fair representation of what I did and a fair representation of how I felt and still feel about being a missionary. Thanks for not accusing me of things I don't believe in!
We really don't care what YOU believe in jakefake. It's what the official LDS church holds as doctrine that counts. Often in the LDS church individual LDS beliefs don't match what the church holds to. The LDS church, for example, does NOT hold to the LGT (Limited Geography Theory) re: the BoM. Given the insignificance of the LDS religion in the world, I'd say 99.999% of the world could care less what you believ OR what the church itself holds as doctrine. AND that percent is is falling.
They come to my door all the time... Frankly, I think its sick. How arrogant do you have to be to go around with the assumption that your faith is "true" and you're "saving" people. It's practically a mental illness.
You are being deceptive. The mormon gospel is the supposed revelation of joseph smith and there is no possible way of distancing yourselves away from smith. Mormonism stands or falls, on joseph smith. I personally after much study see joe smith as a complete fraud, a sly fox at that!
I agree that the strength of our position stands or falls upon whether Joseph Smith saw and spoke with God. I believe that he did because the Spirit of God has told me he did. I have studied it and prayed about it. In fact, my great (x3) grandfather was a personal friend of Joseph and I have read his journal and he spoke very highly of him. Don't believe every rumor you hear. Study it out for yourself and pray about it.
Rumours? Are you kidding me? I grew up lds and I have studied joe smith more than you will ever know! I do not mean to offend, when I say joseph smith was a lot of things(that u don't know about) to many people, but a supposed prophet sent from God he was not! Many attest to his practice of freemasonry occultism, divination, communication (with the dead) not to mention lying to his wife and the towns people about his polygamy (had 30 wives) several still married to someone else, some 14 yrs old
Yes, rumors. If you have studied Joseph Smith so much, then why do you believe all the rumors regarding him (even those recently devised)? My great (x3) grandfather was a personl friend of Joseph Smith, he knew him well, and spoke very highly of him in his journals.
It is cowardly to retrospectively look back and to attack the character of a man who died many years ago!
your sense of logic and reason seems more like your trying to win an argument than trying to get at the truth. You make little sense. If you don't know the truth, you better ask somebody!
desert - I'm sorry if what I have does not make sense. I would gladly try to re-explain myself so you can understand. I am always seeking truth. I am not trying to win an argument, I don't think there can be a winner. I am merely trying to get you to think and to encourage you to stop spreading misunderstandings about my church.
I don't know exactly what you are calling rumours, maybe you could be more specific. When it comes to joe smith there are plenty of historic documents that tell us everything there is to know, from his aquaintances as a young boy, his many wives to lds members attesting to smiths sordid life
gutcheck - You may not be intentionally lying. However, you are spreading unsubstantiated rumors. Do you have first hand knowledge of Joseph Smith? If not, then you are merely spreading rumors.
wrong most so called rumors are in the Documentary History of the Church, him shooting people with a smuggled pistol while he was in jail for example, many mormons call that lies
gutcheck - Okay, if it is not a rumor then please provide a citation to your source. You can not state an opinion as fact, just b/c you think it is true. You must be able to support your opinion with credible authority to strengthen (or weaken) your position.
Why, stylee, when you won't accept ANY info that may put the LDS church/Joe Smith in anything but the most uplifting and inspirational light? You have a list of LDS mantra, memorized, that you can pull out at will in any situation that excuses or explains away all problems: HE wasn't a prophet when he said that. THAT is not doctrine. THAT's not true. THAT was just his opinion. YOU are a LIAR. HE was excommunicated when he said that. That about
1Mo - WHY? B/c I have found that most of the things that I have read that are not uplifting are NOT true. I do not offer excuses!! I am not hear to justify or excuse my church's doctrine or history! I am here to ask others (such as yourself) to support your opinions and to respect the opinions of others! I know my Church's history and doctrine! I do not need someone else to tell me what I do or do not believe! (Please note the use of exclamation points!!!)

But in the ward, having a normal ward library meant having a normal ward librarian.
omiolo 7 months ago
This meant a normal library with normal library stuff.
By the way, there aren't many books in any ward library. I wonder why?
omiolo 7 months ago
One of my first callings in the singles ward was the ward librarian, which I loved because our singles ward was made up of older, single university students at Brigham Young University who were lucky enough to meet in a real ward building and not in some chemistry lab still stinking of sulfur or ammonia.
We met in a family ward building on Grandview Hill in Provo, Utah. We were quite proud of our existence in that building.

@CounterCultureLives That was according to the law of the time, and it is a commandment of God to live the law of the land. the slaves at hat time (at least those belonging to the church) were more like members of the family. All people are allowed the same privileges of the world, so they are allowed all privileges of the gospel. Besides people don't hold grudges against the US government when they were discriminatory, so why should such now invalid complaints be charged to us. All are equal?
ChristianaBoone 9 months ago
@ChristianaBoone Why, of COURSE that was "the law at the time"!! "God's laws?? Or man's laws?? Of course, that pesky "curse" WAS "lifted" back in 1978!! Interesting!! Right at the time that "the blacks" (as Mormons refer to them) were graduating from medical schools, law schools, pharmacy schools, universities, holding commissioned officers ranks in the military, and entering the middle class in droves,(their skin was still black, but their money was green!!) heavenly father lifted the curse!!

"Gain Christ" You dirty his name.

@oldjeepsrule @oldjeepsrule Highly hypocritical of you it is to throw a comment inferring internet research does not count!

I have had personal exchange with former LDS who have left the cult of Joseph Smith including a president of the oldest stake in the country.
Shulamitefire 1 year ago
@oldjeepsrule Are you an ex-Muslim? If so, how long were you Muslim? Did you actually attend the mosque? Or did you just sit in the parking lot? You see your argument is weak. Neither do you have to deal in harmful drugs to know they do harm & that people struggle quitting them.
Shulamitefire 1 year ago
@Shulamitefire I don't have an argument, just a few important questions that you are too yellow to answer, or too weak. Funny thing, the twelve year olds in my Sunday school class will probabally forget more about Christ than you will ever know.
PS. Your descriptions of Mormons betray your ignorance. How very little you know.
What ever makes you happy Saul.

Selah.

What about that he was considered the "village magician" and he was a treasure seeker with his dad and uncle.
What about the trial AND CONVICTION of his treasure hunting scams?

True? Or False?
Fact is: BOM = Joke. Entire passages ripped out of KJV Bible (namely Isaiah and the gospels), the rest - pure folklore and fiction!

What am saying is the Pastor and the Eskimo story. If the Eskimo has never heard of Christianity, would he go to hell for not accepting it? If not, then why should the Pastor risk the Eskimo's eternity by revealing it to him?

retromusic85 2 years ago
That's my point. Obviously a caring god would not punish someone for being ignorant (even though that is the god we see in the old testament), but then why would a priest not allow someone to live in ignorance if it guarantees them a 'free pass'. By the way, the Eskimo himself was not the point. He merely represents someone completely ignorant of Christianity and it's teachings.

It makes perfect sense. If the eskimo had not heard of Christianity, and therefore did not worship it, would he go to hell. I think you'll find that the god of the bible is not as fair and merciful as you think (i.e. destroying a fig tree because it didn't produce fruit - in the wrong season!).

just because they spend 2 years teaching doesn't meen they arnt charitable.

Mormons just don't get it. Their religious fanaticism makes them unable to think clearly. Mormons joined with the Nazis and the KKK to fund TV ads that were filled with BLATANT LIES. The majority of Californians were against Prop 8 a month ago. Then the Mormon-funded dishonest, lying, deceptive ads were run thousands of times a day and they deceived Californians into thinking Prop 8 was something it was not, and that is the ONLY reason it passed.
muscleman9 3 years ago

I love the missionaries! they're so amazing!!! You try devoting that much of your life to religion. They make me so happy!

Mormon missionaries keep harassing my wife, kids and neighbors. I don't respect their tactics.
johnPhilos 3 years ago
johnPhilos - What you may see as harrassment may be viewed by them as "help." If you do not like their tacts then sit them down and nicely explain to them why and ask them to stop. Put yourself in their shoes.
ScottsdaleStylee 3 years ago
They have been told by more than one person that we aren't interested in their message, yet they persist. I have no idea why they are camping out in our neighborhood.
johnPhilos 3 years ago
john - What do you mean by "camping out in [your] neighborhood"? Are you upset b/c they are visiting others in your neighborhood? Or are they visiting you personally on a consistent basis (i.e. weekly) although you have asked them not to visit? I am interested by what you mean by "harass."
ScottsdaleStylee 3 years ago
There must be someone here that likes these guys, which keeps them coming back, but I see them almost everyday, and they have not respected us when we have told them we aren't interested. Also they have followed my neighbor after she said she wasn't interested and hounded her. Also they go to the playground and talk to the kids about religion (I thought there weren't supposed to do that). If they keep it up I'll call their mission president.
johnPhilos 3 years ago
So when you say they are "harassing" you, you mean that they are in your neighborhood and they talk to you? Isn't that just being "neighborly" or "friendly"? Do you think there is something wrong with talking to kids about religion? As long as they are not being inappropriate there is nothing wrong with them talking to children.
No offense, but it sounds that you are being hyper-sensitive. Perhaps you should try to be more understanding.
ScottsdaleStylee 3 years ago
They won't leave my wife and kids alone because they keep trying to push their crackpot religion on us, yes by talking, after we have told them repeatedly that we aren't interested. If you think that is cool then you are pushy religious zealot too. My daughter printed off a bunch of information on their church and gave it to them and the other kids at the playground. Now they don't seem as interested talking. Lets hope it lasts. Maybe they should work on people interested in joining a cult.
johnPhilos 3 years ago
JohnPhilos - Perhaps you SHOULD talk to them. It appears that you do not understand who they are or what they are doing. The missionaries are representatives of Jesus Christ. They teach the same things that Christ would teach you if he were standing before you. Your comments calling me a "pushy religious zealot" and calling my Church a "cult," evidence a disrespect for others beliefs. There is no excuse for personal attacks. I recommend that you are more open-minded and understanding of others.
ScottsdaleStylee 3 years ago
I'm not interested in having my kids indoctrinated with superstitious baloney. Thanks for calling me open-minded. Perhaps you aren't as empty minded as I initially thought;)
johnPhilos 3 years ago
johnPhilos -- If you were open-minded you would realize that anothers beliefs are not "supersitious baloney" simply because you do not understand them.
ScottsdaleStylee 3 years ago
"Not superstitious" are you serious? Have you never taken inventory of all the superstition your religion embraces? I would rather teach science, and logic to my kids than teach them fairy tales as fact. Just because something gives you a warm fuzzy doesn't make it true.
johnPhilos 3 years ago
Okay, john, there is no reason for you to attack my beliefs as "supersition" or "fairy tales" simply b/c you do not understand them. Please show some maturity and respect for others. Thanks.

As a former missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I appreciate this documentary to be just as it claims. This is really, honestly a fair representation of what I did and a fair representation of how I felt and still feel about being a missionary. Thanks for not accusing me of things I don't believe in!
jakefake1 3 years ago
We really don't care what YOU believe in jakefake. It's what the official LDS church holds as doctrine that counts. Often in the LDS church individual LDS beliefs don't match what the church holds to. The LDS church, for example, does NOT hold to the LGT (Limited Geography Theory) re: the BoM. Given the insignificance of the LDS religion in the world, I'd say 99.999% of the world could care less what you believ OR what the church itself holds as doctrine. AND that percent is is falling.

You talk about a cult, the book of Mormon is a joke! There are two kinds of Mormons, the first is the deceived and the second is the deceiver!

They come to my door all the time... Frankly, I think its sick. How arrogant do you have to be to go around with the assumption that your faith is "true" and you're "saving" people. It's practically a mental illness.

We believe that Jesus Christ has commanded his followers to preach the gospel to all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people (Matthew 27:17-19).
joaozaow 3 years ago
yea, joseph smiths gospel!
desertdoggz 3 years ago
The missionaries are representatives of Jesus Christ and they share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, not Smith's gospel.
ScottsdaleStylee 3 years ago
You are being deceptive. The mormon gospel is the supposed revelation of joseph smith and there is no possible way of distancing yourselves away from smith. Mormonism stands or falls, on joseph smith. I personally after much study see joe smith as a complete fraud, a sly fox at that!
desertdoggz 3 years ago
desertdoggz-- How have I been deceptive?
I agree that the strength of our position stands or falls upon whether Joseph Smith saw and spoke with God. I believe that he did because the Spirit of God has told me he did. I have studied it and prayed about it. In fact, my great (x3) grandfather was a personal friend of Joseph and I have read his journal and he spoke very highly of him. Don't believe every rumor you hear. Study it out for yourself and pray about it.
ScottsdaleStylee 3 years ago
Rumours? Are you kidding me? I grew up lds and I have studied joe smith more than you will ever know! I do not mean to offend, when I say joseph smith was a lot of things(that u don't know about) to many people, but a supposed prophet sent from God he was not! Many attest to his practice of freemasonry occultism, divination, communication (with the dead) not to mention lying to his wife and the towns people about his polygamy (had 30 wives) several still married to someone else, some 14 yrs old
desertdoggz 3 years ago
desert - You avoided by question.
ScottsdaleStylee 3 years ago
your sense of logic and reason seems more like your trying to win an argument than trying to get at the truth. You make little sense. If you don't know the truth, you better ask somebody!
desertdoggz 3 years ago
desert - I'm sorry if what I have does not make sense. I would gladly try to re-explain myself so you can understand. I am always seeking truth. I am not trying to win an argument, I don't think there can be a winner. I am merely trying to get you to think and to encourage you to stop spreading misunderstandings about my church.
ScottsdaleStylee 3 years ago
I don't know exactly what you are calling rumours, maybe you could be more specific. When it comes to joe smith there are plenty of historic documents that tell us everything there is to know, from his aquaintances as a young boy, his many wives to lds members attesting to smiths sordid life
desertdoggz 3 years ago
ya im sick of mormons callin ppl liars for listing joseph smiths ill deeds, history was kept very well in the 1800s
Gutcheckcoming 3 years ago
gutcheck - You may not be intentionally lying. However, you are spreading unsubstantiated rumors. Do you have first hand knowledge of Joseph Smith? If not, then you are merely spreading rumors.
ScottsdaleStylee 3 years ago
wrong most so called rumors are in the Documentary History of the Church, him shooting people with a smuggled pistol while he was in jail for example, many mormons call that lies
Gutcheckcoming 3 years ago
gutcheck - Okay, if it is not a rumor then please provide a citation to your source. You can not state an opinion as fact, just b/c you think it is true. You must be able to support your opinion with credible authority to strengthen (or weaken) your position.
ScottsdaleStylee 3 years ago
which thin are a you replying to the joe smith so called rumors ? the boo Documentary History of the Church published by the mormon church.
Gutcheckcoming 3 years ago
Gut - Have you actually read the "Documentary History of the Church"? If so, please provide a volume and page number.
Or are you merely repeating what someone else has told you. (That is called a rumor.)
ScottsdaleStylee 3 years ago
Why, stylee, when you won't accept ANY info that may put the LDS church/Joe Smith in anything but the most uplifting and inspirational light? You have a list of LDS mantra, memorized, that you can pull out at will in any situation that excuses or explains away all problems: HE wasn't a prophet when he said that. THAT is not doctrine. THAT's not true. THAT was just his opinion. YOU are a LIAR. HE was excommunicated when he said that. That about
covers any documentation we bring up.
1MoNoMo 3 years ago
