The man is a sociopath. He has not feeling. He speaks way to fast, and does not wait to see the audience is moved by his comments. He is simply spouting the words that need to be said.
Mr.Dunlap's story was moving and inspiring, something I have become familiar with through TED talks. I was amoung those that wished roaches would inherit the earth, but knowing such people exist/existed has instilled new faith in me for humanity.
I can assure anyone that has doubts about the authenticity of this story that at least the basic facts are true. I attend one of Dr. Dunlaps classes every Wednesday at Wofford College, at which our library is dedicated to Sandor Tezler. I also recieved funding from the Sandor Tezler fund to study abroad in high school.
Dr. Dunlap is certainly a southerner though I wouldnt classify his accent as purely southern. Even those of us who hear him on a regular basis wonder about its exact nature.
I stumbled on this video and am almost overwhelmed. I had the privilege of taking a class -The Film Experience - as an undergraduate at The University of South Carolina, Fall of 1973. The professor was the same Dr. Benjamin Dunlap. I can assure you that the accent is southern, as he identifies his hometown, Columbia, as being burned during the Civil War. I remember EVERY class session with Dr. Dunlap as exciting and thought provoking. For me, he was one of my absolute best teachers.
The story of a passionate life in a passionate telling. I'm kind of wondering what is the relevance of the hungarian nation[ality] in the big picture but it does bring a nice touch to the story. Great stuff.
Sandor Teszler was indeed a real person, and his story was real. That's who Dunlap's talk is about. Google Teszler, and you'll find a link to the Wofford College Web site that gives more details about him.
It sounds like he said his native state is South Carolina, and his city was burnt down in the past for considering independence -- probably during the Civil War.
this guy is a powertalker.storyteller.peopleempowerer.profi
a little too reverent of the old guy, but the heart of this story rings true to me, having lived 31 years with a golden-hearted Polish holocaust survivor, and known a few Hungarian survivors.
Human stories are quite limited in number, when you leave out the detail, but the living of them doesn't care if they have already been written down. What's truer than truth is the story.
That such interesting coincidences as the sockthief episode are not so rare in the lifestories of SURVIVORS is a fact. Look at the Shoah Project. The vast majority of those arrested under similar conditions experienced no miraculous-coincidence salvation.
Check out 'Bolte-Taylor's 'what it feels like to have stroke.' Brilliant.

I think he sums up Central European (or at least Hungarian) identity beautifully:
"A complex moral awareness; a heritage of guilt and defeat, matched by defiance and bravado."

One of my favorite TED videos! He is such an eloquent speaker, and he told his story so passionately.
I apologize if this is obvious, or I didn't hear something in the video, but what is the speaker's accent?
groundlings123 4 years ago
It's a bit hard to say, but it sounds much like a US Southern accent.

Have you ever read the book Les Misérables?
It's the same story that he told but set in the french revolution.
The book was written over 70 years BEFORE WWII.
