Call me crazy, but I think Wootton is a better player than Luther. Compare At Folsom to At San Quentin. Wootton's playing is more energetic and livelier. More double pickin, more interesting syncopation. He really was a progression of Johnny's sound.
I believe that Bob took the sound to another level.Bob came out of Oklahoma where thet bakersfield sound came from.Bob n Carl when they teamed together were as good as it gets.Bob n Vicky drove John n Junes bus on the last tour.No disrespect to Luther but Bob pulled his weight.Sunday morning comming down n many western movies featured Bob.
I love this clip. many more road miles to the TN3!! Bob came to the Johnny Cash show and gave all he had to offer for 30 years. i call that loyalty. in my book that is the mark of a great musician.
We all loved Luther's sound, but let's be clear here. Neither Bob or Johnny Cash ever claimed that Bob had the same sound as Luther. Luther had 13 years and Bob had 30 years with JC. I believe when Bob refers to the sound he is referring to the collective sound of Johnny Cash and his band and their music.
