@ericjacksonheights Surely you jest! Milstein, Heifetz, Ricci, Perlman, Oistrakh, Kogan, Francescatti...and others are all better. But I very much liked this performance.
@violatione Who are you?????? Are you serious? Do you even know how to play violin? I can't believe people write things like this. "and all the others"... You, for example? Anyone who would make the kind of judgment you did reveals him or herself to be either completely ignorant, or utterly tasteless.
Nous avons grand besoin de renseignements sur cette video : lieu, année, qqs renseignements supplémentaires seraient les bienvenus. Merci de bien vouloir nous les fournir. I love this piece, its one of my favorites, and Grumiaux has beautiful technique, and i dont think you can compare Oistrakh and him, every musician has his own style and advantages to playing
Hmm, you obviously know very little about Grumiaux. His left hand technique was actually one of the very best ever. Better than that of Szeryng, Milstein, Menuhin to name a few. Regarding his bow arm, the very best in the business. If you don't believe me, just listen to Heifetz try to play solo Bach in 1952. Really, the 1960-1962 solo Bach cycle by Grumiaux was better technically than Szeryng's which we hear so much about (wish Artur Rubenstein had listened to THIS one.
There's only a little mistake. This Concerto isn't by Beethoven but was composed by Tchaikovskij. However, even if grumiaux isn't surely the best tchaikovskij interpreter, the video is good.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm sorry, but i Didn't listen to all the track and so i confused it with the first movement of tchaikovskij's theme. The solos are very similar. In my opinion the best interpreter of this concert is Menuhin. Listen to the recordin of 1947 with Furtwangler.
Grumiaux understood the classical style so well. He may not have had the technical facility of the true virtuosi - Heifetz, Oistrakh and modern Vengerov (and any other extras you may care to mention) - but he was certainly the utmost in classical musicianship; refined, restrained and intellectual. I just love his down bows and the arpeggiated passages.
Both are great violinists, and both are outstanding not so much because of technique, but of very distinctive style. As for technique of Grumiaux for my opinion his right hand don't allow him to take very powerful sound. However, I like his sound and his style very much. If to compare him with Oistrakh - I prefer Grumiaux playing Mozart. As for Beethoven, Oistrakh in my opinion reveals more intensity and is closer to author.
Grumiaux plays with unequalled warmth, feel and emotion. His rendition of Paganini's concertos are the best of any soloist. Thanks for sharing this jewel.
Grumiaux is wonderful but he deserves a better conductor. The ensemble is often shoddy and the guy on the podium is totally expressionless as he faces his orchestra. Watch for the moment wherte he has his left hand on his hip!
Although unique, I think Beethoven was closer to being a Classicist who pushed the envelope rather than a full-blown Romantic; therefore, I prefer Grumiaux's pure classic approach to this work above all others. His studio recording with Van Beinum and the Concertgebouw Orchestra is sublime. He and Szeryng are my favorite violinists, with Szeryng/Monteux my favorite team for the Brahms Concerto. Will someone plese reissue these gems?
heifetz was the most technically perfect violinist but not always the most musically interesting to me except in works such as the korngold concerto, encore showpieces, the saint-saens introduction and rondo capriccioso, and the amazing sibelius concerto recording with hendl; there he has no rivals.
when I first heard Arthur Grumiaux play, in the 1960's, I thought that the violin had been invented for him. He combines sweet purity of tone, incredible phrasing, nearly flawless technique, and passion in a way that is unique.
He did not get the kind of recognition his playing deserved, beyond that of other violinists. If you listen to Violinists today, you will hear his influence. If anyone out there has Arthur playing the Bach Sonatas & Partitas for solo violin, it would be wonderful if you could post them. They are among the most difficult pieces ever written for the violin, the #2 Partita especially, and no one has ever played them like Grumiaux.
If you don't feel good after playing that Violin Concerto then you should go kill yourself. Beethoven was a genius, and THAT concerto should be called Emperor.

If you don't feel good after playing that Violin Concerto then you should go kill yourself. Beethoven was a genius, and THAT concerto should be called Emperor.
I like watching his left hand - fingers so perfectly curved! Otherwise, the playing is too dry for my taste (as is most of what I have heard from Grumiaux). At least he doesn't try to browbeat the music out of the notes by force like Perlman tends to...
Alright now, to say that Perlman is not one of the most incandescent talents of our time is beyond demeaning. Perlman is used as a benchmark nowadays because he is the only violinist left that holds the true principles of the those who ruled the violin world in the Days of Heifetz, Milstein, and Grumiaux. However to compare the two and demean either of them is beyond disrespectful.
Since it's obviously from several decades ago and there are women in the orchestra, I'm guessing this performance took place in England with an English orchestra -- the English seem to be the only ones who "allowed" women back then.
Hey cwhbrown, could you post when/where/orchestra/conductor maybe?
The cadenza is a shortened version of the one by Fritz Kreisler.
The first LP I bought with my own money (I was 13) was Grumiaux playing Mozart concertos 1 & 4. The music impressed me so much that it is difficult for me (58) to listen to other interpretations. I refuse by exemple to listen to the emotions of Gideon Kremer (in Mozart-concertos). Other violinists have maybe a more fitting personality for Beethoven than Grumiaux.
to ct5knight89, Its your opinion, but please don't make an idiot out of yourself by demeaning a violinist of such stature and then comparing him to a mass selling violinist who caters to the popular taste (no offense to Perlman, I think he is an excellent violinist in his own right, but people who use him as a benchmark are mainstream listeners who try to pretend to know more than they do.. or perhaps their taste just sucks I guess).
Thank you very much for posting a Grumiaux. I am desperate to find video recording of him playing Bach or Mozart. He is easily my favorite violinist of all time.
to mandGLver, this guy brings this piece to shame, no one can do it better than perlman, this guy does half assed and doesnt bring out the true beauty and genious of beethoven's writing
You don't even know who grumiaux is...how can you make such a statement as "this guy does half assed and doesn't bring out the true beauty..of beethoven" Very ignorant and immature.

Grumaiux was a fantastic musician and violinist. Comparing his technique to Heifetz is fruitless.
His technique surpassed anything he played and that is good enough.
His Bach is the most fantastic desert island playing~~!
He produced one of the most gorgeous tones and i always appreciate his ability to play the music without adding too much of himself.
A MASTER!
