Not to speak ill of Peter Tomarken -- but I thought Second Chance was the far superior version of the game. Better theme, better logo, better open (having the board 'split' apart was just too cool) -- just plain better!
5:36 emusic.com had an album of TV themes called "Australian TV's Greatest Hits", and the theme to the Australian "Family Feud" sounds a lot like the theme to "Second Chance." Are they in fact the same music?
I was on this show at the tender age of 18. Got "deviled" out. Lovely parting gifts included 3 boxes of 5th avenue candy bars, a sterling silver plated serving tray, a Hoover canister vacuum, and a Brother stereo with turntable and 8 track. I was soooo nervous! I wish I could find a tape of the episode I was on...just to remember what it's like to have hair on my head again.
It's actually quite easy to hit the top-dollar spot on this board. If you look closely at the board while it's spinning, you'll notice that at one point, Square #4 lights up once, then lights up twice in a row quickly, then lights up a fourth time a split second later. If you can memorize this "rhythm," you can hit the top spot every time with a little practice.
There's a rumor that one contestant actually did this and went on mini-Larson run, but sadly there's no way to verify it.
@a7xfan66611 Michael Larson would have never won this game the way the board moved. He would have hit some devils in there. Also, there are no money plus a spin.
Crazy how much of the set of this show resembles the set of Press Your Luck. They reused more ideas than just the games concept when they made Press Ypur Luck, it seems.
@Headbanger142 Yes...however this version WAS ahead of its time in 1977, despite the lack of cartoons when they get a 'devil'. Produced by the same staff as "Press Your Luck".
I think the energy level of the contestants was better in PRESS YOUR LUCK. Here they're so formal and quiet with their spins. Man I haven't seen this since I was six years old and living in Arizona. Today is the very first time I've ever seen this show. Thanks for posting it!!
Remember bac in those days game shows were wiped in favor of other shows So this is a very possible reason why hardly any episodes of this show even exists. Who has the full pilot of Press Your Luck?
1) Agreed. They were seen as disposable programming, since networks failed to realize that people might want to see something they missed. Their stance was much like "Wheel of Fortune" and their championship policy -- one and done.
It is a shame they did not put more effort into this show. But at least they did better with PRESS YOUR LUCK. I wonder why they destroyed all the episodes of this show.
It replaced the short-lived "Don Ho Show", which aired on ABC at noon Eastern from October, 1976 to March, 1977. Don Ho Show was what replaced Hot Seat.
The commercial cue definitely has a Score Productions sound to it. It begins with a bass/synth melody similar to the 1973 "Concentration" theme, followed by a "Showoffs"-type horn melody. After that (as heard at the show's end), appears an organ melody, similar to that in the "Match Game" theme.
Luck is something we always look at as something that really runs our lives. Good luck and bad luck seem very divided. On the appropriately named Second Chance, their is a lot of luck involved but great strategy too. The question round is a very good round and fits well with the name as I said, very strategic. The bonus board looks glitzy and not so colorful but it can produce a very exciting game. The format my be weak and it doesn look like it's being stretched out. Fascinating.

actually, NEWLYWED GAME had long been charged with certain degree's of sexism and that show had a long life on the network and in syndication from the 1960's through the 1980's and I believe there was a 3 year run in the 1990's as well.
Sexism may have been the scape-goat for THE BETTER SEX but if that were the real reason it was canceled, the NEWLYWED GAME would have been kicked off the air years sooner because it was seen as sexist and juvenile by critics.
I think the simple fact of ratings did THE BETTER SEX in...not the sexism or anything. If the series had huge ratings I don't think it would've left the air. This was the era of double-entendre game shows don't forget and sitcoms...like THREE'S COMPANY, SOAP, NEWLYWED GAME and MATCH GAME...so, in my view, THE BETTER SEX was no different than those programs when it came to men vs women and innuendo enriched language.
If second Chance ran for 19 weeks and better sex ran 13 weeks would there be 6 weeks of second chance left over or were they record over by other shows?
In my opinion, this show was a good idea. It was just a little ahead of its time. It would explain why "Press Your Luck" would last a little longer in the 80s.
But the foghorn for the devil is what makes it funny at the time, especially the 4th Devil Foghorn, the original exists somewhere...But i don't know where.
press your luck replaced the write in answer with a buzz in answer& that version ran smoothly for 3 seasons. second chance answering system was handicapped at best.
This was mainly due to the limitation of technology at the time. PYL was able to use the system of buzz in with an answer was simply becasue they were able to use a machine called a Chyron Machine or Character Generator. It was similar to a computer and was able to type in words onto the screen. In the late 70's they were used mostly by Television Station for their news programs.
What I find wrong about this questioning format, is that if your answer isn't any of the second chance ones, you know you're not right and you just HAVE to change it.
Bill Carrutheres didnt want to cancel this show, he said in an interview. But, he had a meeting with ABC and Mark Goodson, and M-G payed bigger money to air his show that Bil Carruthers could, thus his show was cancelled.

What I find wrong about this questioning format, is that if your answer isn't any of the second chance ones, you know you're not right and you just HAVE to change it.
Hondo20132 3 years ago
Take a look at the first question for example. Both Maggie and Jack wrote down Minnesota and Lynn wrote Kansas. Jim said that at least 1 is wrong.
Now, Minnesota was one of the second chance answers and Kansas wasn't. Thus, Lynn couldn't have been right, so she HAD to change the answer.
And if Jim said that at least 1 is RIGHT, then it would've been an even worse problem. But figure that out for yourself.
