I always loved this tune - but didn't know who sang it until they played it on Sirius/XM. This is an incredible tune - and this video is just fantastic - I could watch it all night.

I heard this song at the grocery store today and at my "advanced age", I should have known the song. It almost sounded like Dusty Springfield, but I don't believe she ever covered it. I'm still checking on that, as I'm a huge Dusty fan and it may have been one of her more obscure songs. Anyway, I am in complete agreement with Vivelabretagnelibre about this being a great song. Damn, so many of the lesser-known songs from the past would simply kick ass today.
Someone wrote that this is what The Supremes would have sounded like if they let Florence Ballard sing lead. That is pretty dead on. I'd write more but I have to clean my apartment. I swear something died in here.
The quitessential look and sound of black sixties music. AWESOME! These women were beautiful. It makes me sick to think of what was going on socially for black people during these years. To think that they had to fight to get what they should have had to begin with. It's sad to think.
Been trying to track this one down for a LONG time! Knew some lyrics but had no clue of the performer(s)or title. Heard it on sirius just minutes ago. Ran in an punched it up on the "TUBE" because I knew somebody had to have posted it. THANKS dazzababes!
My friend Roxie, who lived on the "wrong side of the tracks", introduced me to this song (and Motown) back in junior high. God bless Roxie, wherever she may be.
This is a real music of 1960`s and I love it. I love The Flirtations and they are great singers.. Today`s music of 2000`s is not a real music and I can not stand them. Thank you for putting this up.

@dazzababes agreed, Northernl Soul actually comes from Northern England.. The Flirtations moved to England and this type of soul that they produced was Northern Soul - hence the excessive use of horn, trumpet and the plectrum on the bass.
@SuperBandstand Sorry but you are both talking garbage. Northern soul is a British term for music played in dance clubs in Northern England during the 70's. This was mainly based on R&B music from the sixties and the most famous club was Wigan Casino.
@1savaged Thank You. I have never heard of anyone sspeaking of Nrothern Soul in the States.I'ts a British phrase. Some of the artists that should have hit it here did hit over there--like Doris Duke. I usually associate The Flirtations with Britian rather than the US. I was watching a BBC video on here about the Three Degrees and one of the Flirtations was part of it..
@Covellos1 dazzababes seriously spot-on. You should look up Northern Soul on Wikipedia for a pretty comprehensive history, if you're interested in knowing more. There's a great CD box-set "An Introduction To Northern Soul" worth giving a listen to as well. Some very inspiring tunes!! I don't live in the past but I sure appreciate it! Cheers, enjoy a musical journey that never ends! Ever!
@SuperBandstand The phrase northern soul emanated from the record shop Soul City in Covent Garden, London, which was run by journalist Dave Godin. It was first publicly used in Godin's weekly column in Blues and Soul magazine in June 1970. In a 2002 interview with Chris Hunt of Mojo magazine, Godin said he had first come up with the term in 1968, to help employees at Soul City differentiate the more modern funkier sounds from the smoother, Motown-influenced soul of a few years earlier!
i'm 21 years old but this music makes me want to give anything to life in the 50's and 60's, you hear that rap shit on the radio? what the hell ever happened to ppl liking good music?
wow!!! I never knew what they looked like!! RARE!!! I fell in love with this song when I first heard it and have been a fan ever since!! I am going through my old 45's today and this was one of the gems I forgot I had. #BRILLIANT!!
I had completely forgotten about this song . . . the name or the girls didn't ring a bell at all, but once the song began, I said "oh yeah, now I remember!!!" What a classic gem.
i heard this song on oldies radio today in Detroit driving my car, which is the best time to listen to the classics! Pleasure will surely follow me all the days of my life.
Sorry if I'm being thick but what exactly is Northern Soul? How is it different from Motown (if it all)? I'm 28 and didn't grow up when this stuff was popular, and therefore can't understand the distinction. Love this song though (and Gloria Jones' 'Tainted Love').
The "Northern" refers to the north of England where there was a resurgence of popularity in rare US soul in the 1970's. The Wigan Casino is the nightclub most associated with the genre.
@dazzababes Exactly dazzababes!!!...I grew up knowing this..dead on! and even though I'm a london transplant now in the the U.S knows the northern part of England was well known for 'northern soul'...not necessarily making the music there, but just a huge following...there's even a style of dance that goes along with it....those tight fast spins...wheeeee. well if are British and a lil older you should so know this. its as well known in the north as mushy peas. ;)
@dazzababes That's KIND of what I thought - it was popular in Northern dance clubs in the UK. I still chuckle, though, when I think of ANYTHING interesting happening in Wigan... I wonder if there was a Runcorn Casino, too... :-)
First, Motown is NOT "soul music", it is pop music produced for a mass audience, though some later Motown can be classified as soul.
So-called "Northern Soul" is a classification out of England and includes many types of artists and is less stringent than the US as to what constitutes "soul" music.
Dazzababes is half (or mostly) correct. It is a certain sound that, no doubt, Motown made popular, but that Motown was only a part large part of. By the mid 1960s the sound became popular in England. The actual identification and essence of "Northern Soul" was that it had could have any of the many known Motown rhythm arrangements, but with a big jab of "British horns." Just think "Smokey's *I Second That Emotion* meets *Pomp And Circumstance." The term was coined in 1968 or so.
Also, the term "Northern Soul" was coined to distinguish it from "Southern Soul," which was more funk and "brass" oriented. Motown was to Northern Soul what Stax was to Southern Soul. Detroit and Memphis might have been the (respective) epicenters of these sounds, but not exclusively. Think "One In A Million" by Maxine Brown... It has a "Northern Soul" sound, but she never recorded for Motown... Same with what Al Green was to the "Memphis" or "Southern Soul" sounds, but yet not Stax.
A full history on 'Northern Soul' ,ay be obrained by entering the term into Wikipedia, which will reward you with an accurate and well researched page:-) Keep The Faith:-)
CKLW (which was 800 AM, rather than 880) played it and so did WKNR Keener 13. It hit the charts in 1969, but it sounded like it was recorded in 1965 or 1966. And that's saying a lot.
Whatever happenned to this kind of music . I sure do miss it. Wish it was today's standard. instead of all that other stuff their sell'in. Long live the 60's
@welder541 - I'm so glad people are starting to appreciate the music from the '50s and '60s. These are classics that will go on forever. The music today is forgettable and disposable--who is going to remember all those pop singers of modern times who all sound the same and whose songs won't be remembered a year from now?
The music from that era spawned a Renaissance which spread to all other areas of life. It was magical and it will live forever.
@Cissy2cute Ya know something else about this video i really liked are those bell bottom outfits their wear'in, i love e'm. I know some folks can leave u'm. But they are so period correct for the time it just kind of screams at ya 1969:):):):) Always loved this song!!!! never knew these 3 ladies were so beautiful, i'd never seen them before now.
@welder541 I totally agree. I wish Urban/R&B music would return to hooks and melody rather than the forgettable crap that passes for R&B now. Beyonce could do a great cover of this song, as long as Jay Z wouldn't muck it up with his wretched hip-hop fingerprints.
@carlynutt Ya Know ya might be right on about Beyonce. But i hope they leave this one alone. Something about past remake's of beautiful original song's sometimes end up better if they'd just left them alone and done something else. I'm just say'in, if ya know what i mean. I LOVE this song just the way it is. Unless if it's by the flirt's of course like a new rerecord. That'd be great :):):):)
franklin rocks is right. These girls and this song could blow the doors off any of these tinny-voiced twits trying to sing these days. What a powerful sounding song. It should have been a much bigger hit. I do remember it being pretty popular on Detroit radio though.
No talent, STD-ridden skank-a-zoids like Jessica Simpleton and Britty Spears ought be made to listen to REAL music like this before they open up their mouths or their legs ever again. What a straight groove this song - a classic if there ever was one.
Its so weird that they never became mainstream. They were definitely one of the better music groups of that era.

The "Northern" refers to the north of England where there was a resurgence of popularity in rare US soul in the 1970's. The Wigan Casino is the nightclub most associated with the genre.
Do a bit of Googling.

@dazzababes Speaking of which, was this video filmed in Bolton Abbey?

Done with true feeling and to the point; I haven't heard in years and it still sounds excellent.
So sorry but what musical style is `Northern Soul'?
I'm from NYC and I never heard that description.
Happy New Year.

Long live the 60's
welder541 2 years ago 28
@welder541 - I'm so glad people are starting to appreciate the music from the '50s and '60s. These are classics that will go on forever. The music today is forgettable and disposable--who is going to remember all those pop singers of modern times who all sound the same and whose songs won't be remembered a year from now?
The music from that era spawned a Renaissance which spread to all other areas of life. It was magical and it will live forever.

@Cissy2cute Ya know something else about this video i really liked are those bell bottom outfits their wear'in, i love e'm. I know some folks can leave u'm. But they are so period correct for the time it just kind of screams at ya 1969:):):):) Always loved this song!!!! never knew these 3 ladies were so beautiful, i'd never seen them before now.
welder541 1 year ago
@welder541 I totally agree. I wish Urban/R&B music would return to hooks and melody rather than the forgettable crap that passes for R&B now. Beyonce could do a great cover of this song, as long as Jay Z wouldn't muck it up with his wretched hip-hop fingerprints.
carlynutt 1 year ago

DetroitDude777 2 years ago 5
No talent, STD-ridden skank-a-zoids like Jessica Simpleton and Britty Spears ought be made to listen to REAL music like this before they open up their mouths or their legs ever again. What a straight groove this song - a classic if there ever was one.
