  • how long does the pressure last fro ???

  • @KRAYSLiCK999 Depends really, if the bottle isn't very full of paraffin/other fuel you have to pump it more to get the pressure, but even when it's running low you would have to pump it less frequently than you would have to refill a meths burner. Does that help?

We cooked two dinners for five people and then breakfast in the morning, plus two rounds of hot drinks, during a stay in White Laggan bothy in Galloway and after priming it I only had to pump it up again once.

  • @BenightedBivvy i was thinking of making a homemade one but so far i looked on Google and no plans for making one similar to this !

  • @KRAYSLiCK999 honestly mate I don't think you'll have any luck, the parts are too complicated. Unlike the meths burner, where loads of people have made replica/"improved" penny stoves, this one has the fuel injector needle with a clever cleaning system, and a magnet tool. Basically, you brush the tool underneath the needle and it moved the needle around in a way that cleans out any impurities in the injector that had been partially blocking the system.

Were you going to use it with a Trangia?

  • @KRAYSLiCK999 Also, I seem to remember my technology teacher telling me that it is illegal (in the UK) to make compression cylinders without a licence, which is essentially what you would be doing (unless you were planning on buying the bottle part).

Not that the illegality of it would be enough to put many people off, but I believe it is illegal because of the danger involved, so wouldn't recommend it.

  • @BenightedBivvy ok MAN thanks FOR THE safety tip GREAT VID BTW

  • Great thanks for taking the time to record and post, really interesting.

Wanted to ask, apart from the cheaper fuel what other benefits do you see to using this cooking system?

    Thanks

  • @rockandrope Hi, first of all you're very welcome! When I got the kit I was really pleased with its performance and a little surprised at how few people seem to know about them or use them!

Your question is obviously something people are keen to know, as someone asked me before! I have posted a list of six reasons why I think it is an improvement in previous comments (about 2 months ago).

Have a look and if you have any more questions just ask!

  • I sent Trangia an email asking if the multi-fuel burner would work with the smaller Trangia 27 set and here is their reply:

"You can use X2 to your 27 stove. But you should be cautious with the heat... If you use it outside in cold climate (which its intended for) it should not be a problem

However, It will not pack inside, will not fit."

That said, I've also read that the fit is not great for the 27 so I guess proceed at your own risk, which I very well might do!

  • @mizrachi1000 Thanks for letting me know!

Judging by the fact that you were also considering the winter attachment, overheating shouldn't be a problem ;)

I looked into buying a 27 for 1 or 2 people to save a bit of weight, so if you do end up getting it I would be interested to hear whether it fit properly!

  • @mizrachi1000

ALSO, what you said about the X2 confused me for a bit there, so I looked it up. It seems that Trangia have two multifuel burners, the one in this video and the X2, which can burn gas as well as liquid fuels. I have added quite a bit of new info to the video information, which should help you...you don't want to order an item thinking you're getting one and get the other!

Personally I don't think having a gas attachment is useful...you get more for your weight with paraffin :)

  • well, i'm fairly sold on this burner and the idea of traveling lighter as you mentioned but it may prove to be a moot point as i realize now my trangia is the smaller model 27 and not the 25. it does look like i can fit an optimus nova in the trangia 27 with a special adapter but i don't know much about it.

  • @mizrachi1000

Ah, as I have a 25 I didn't look into the "doesn't fit a 27 so well" thing very closely, I just remember seeing it written somewhere.

I've had a closer look now, and it seems like what they were saying is it won't fit inside the trangia when it is all packed up, unless you leave the kettle behind. I don't use a kettle anyway, just a pan and lid, and always keep the burner in a side pocket on my pack with the bottle so I don't see that this is any disadvantage!

  • @BenightedBivvy

Is it just a matter of packing things up in a tidy way that is the issue? I was more concerned over the heat output of the multifuel in the smaller windscreen. I suppose an email to Trangia is in order!

  • @mizrachi1000

As far as I can tell, yes! Crazy, right?

Trangia's information on this is fairly poor, I'm disappointed. I'm sure they will let you know more reliably than forums will if you email them though, it's a good idea!

If you find out, can you let me know on here please? Thanks :)

  • I am considering it. Especially for this winter. It's either this or the Trangia winter attachment, which is just a primer for the Spirit burner.

My question is: aside from cooking speed and control, what other benefits are there to using a Trangia with the multi-fuel bottle over the traditional meths burner?

  • @mizrachi1000 Ok, here are a few, I may have to split it up:

    1) as long as you have a reasonable amount of paraffin in the bottle before you start cooking, it won't run out while you're making your meal! This was one of the most annoying things I found about the meths burner, especially as you have to wait for it to cool before you refill it.

    2) you can use a much wider variety of fuels, so if you wanted to do a long walk like one of the national trails and pick up supplies as you go it's ideal

  • @mizrachi1000

    3) you can FRY on it! The meths burner just isn't hot enough, but the multi fuel adapter is as hot as you could possibly need, which presents lots of tasty opportunities, such as bacon ;)

  • @mizrachi1000

    4) this is similar to 1) but I'm making a slightly different point here, if you use a multifuel adapter you have to carry less weight as fuel. As a quick comparison, a 5-day hike I did with four people using a meths burner required 3L of meths for cooking, and we didn't even make drinks. 1.5L of paraffin lasted five days with some to spare at the end for FIVE people, and we made lots of hot drinks.

  • @mizrachi1000

    5) I would say that carrying paraffin is safer than carrying meths as it is more difficult to light and if you have a leak you won't gas yourself - I have woken up in a tent with a very strong smell of meths from a badly closed bottle before, it scared the hell out of me.

    6) The multifuel burner is a pleasure to use, I found the meths burner is a but of a chore. You can pretty much cook anything on it that you might cook at home on a hob, making your whole trip more enjoyable!

  • deleted by accident. again, thanks for the vid

  • @mizrachi1000 I take it you're considering buying one, is there anything else you want to know?
