Back in 2009 when Obama validated police overactivity in the case of their binding Professor Gates at his home in Cambridge, he essentially gave his tacit approval for all law enforcement agencies to engage in unlawful behavior. The national outrage was on perceived racism, but underneath that rage, the unconstitutional was being reinforced, and it has continued to grow until now, publicly, Obama is calling for even greater police authority and power.

People get down on the police. But a vast majority are just trying to do their job and keep people safe. THAT SAID, filming them should be legal to catch those bad seeds whose brutality has stained the entire reputation of the US police force.
Might I suggest a coalition called Painted Black to be formed to have members (dressed in black) and shoot cameras with black paint-balls between 2-4.am when visibility is low and few people are around. One good shot, right on the lens. Nothing more, nothing less. No property is damaged, no illegal weapons used, and no trespassing committed. Map camera locations during the day, take them out at night.
Names spring to mind - Rodney King, Ian Tomlinson. Police should be filmed at every oppourtunity as the Police cannot be trusted and we need protection from the Police. Hpefully people will have more and more covert "body worn" cameras and bring more of these Police thugs and murderers to justice.
There are smaller and smaller cameras available, including one that looks like a bluetooth and fits behind your ear. works kind of like tivo, in that it records all the time, but does not save recording until you tell it to, then saves the last few minutes. Good alternative to an obvious video camera. Also, they are getting small enough for some people to have in their hair, unnoticed. Hack unto them as they hack unto us!
So police are allowed to film you, but if you film them you get arrested... sounds fair.
If I get pulled over by the police, I'm going to film them with audio and I won't stop if they ask me BECAUSE I will need video/audio evidence to bring to court.
So what these guys are saying basically is that the law only applies to the ordinary citizen and not to the police...because they can do no wrong, right?....Or Wall Street Bankers...
the reason this continues is because there's ALWAYS some sheep that supports it no matter what, because they think their innocence is an absolute and live in a delusional world where bad things only happen to bad people
@cloudberry121 well you tube burnt my ass again about my comment.click on this on you tube or just Google it,DARREN RING IN TN.watch the video and tell me your thoughts about it.
well i sure told the cops off with my video camera 2 weeks ago. shows how arrogant they are! he told me turn it off, i stated take the video cam off the corner and i may shut mine down. i told him patriat is not the constitution and get a warrant . shooting dogs not in my watch, shoot me,? they are not over me, i will use force give me liberty or give me death! i go down someone else will as well. get a warrant get out of my yard! they were going to shoot a helpless dog! again in front of kids!
I would, but Benjamin Franklin said it first. However, I tweaked it just a bit to fit the twenty-first century. Here is the original quote: "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
@dickbutt63 Figures all the great colonial figures have a certain fire in their quotes. Whether you agree with them or not you couldn't doubt they had a passion for what they believed in. Your modern day version sounds better to me but hey I am biased considering the era we live in. Thank you for the history lesson I agree with you and Ben, now if only I could see more "Ben" in my life. My pockets tend to get lonely from time to time and need some company LOL.
They will keep hurting us until we say no more. People sould not be afraid of their goverment, goverment should be affraid of their people. They are nothing without us. They can practicly do watever they want against us, but we cannot? Shiiiitt, how elusive and naive they are. The man is saying that the police can do whatever they want to us. But don't under estimate the power of the people, and it is coming to a point where there is gong to be so retaliation agaist these legal criminals.
When they have to twist the law into something it isn't, ie. "wiretapping" which has nothing to do with cameras, the real crinminals are the government.
@CorporateG0th i live in Nashville and i bet that cops are right there listing to every word he is saying or there very close.Nashville and the whole state of tn is corrupt with police and the state government.tn cops have installed there own puppet governor who took office this year and they own all the media in Nashville.WTVF 5 want report anything about police unless they have police permission.just my opinion but now i am on there hit list for making negative comments concerning them.
Well, the thing is, people can always force politicians to change these laws, of course, they have to make them do so, force them and technically drag their fat bureaucratic asses out of their offices to hear... damn, seriously democracy has been extremely crapped on.. politicians pass laws regardless of what people think of them...
@luciferiexcelsil tyranny by majority has little benefit to any other form of government. even in a republic there are individuals who go unrepresented, and thus are easily susceptible to the winds of bias and prejudice. after all a Bill of Rights is merely a collection of words, static yet subject to interpretation.
as long as its public domain. they cant touch u . iff they do its assault on you. a officer should engage in a conversation. they have NO rights to touch your camera.
and this is in the book of law. so get their badge number and go to your lawyer
80 percent of everyone on the planet is to stupid to comprehend how to think like a sensible human being. Cops are the same. Except they are rewarded to be morons and abuse power. Fact
Is this the "Freedom" the americans keep telling us is the reason there deranged,Mentally unstable soldiers are in Iraq & Afghanistan Murdering innocent people for?Looks to me like the americans have less freedom now than they had before the illegal invasion of Iraq.
People constantly use the logic that if you are doing nothing wrong why are you hiding it. Police say that all the time to regular citizens. So why not use the same logic on them. If they're doing nothing wrong why are they hiding it.
I say that people should increase security and consequences for crime.
More bad guys would get put away. And the police will be too scared to do anything illegal like police brutality , because they would be caught and thrown away for a longer time.
im not convinced that people have the right to privacy, i dont mind that the government is videotaping more and more, in fact, it might be better if it gets the human aspect out of law enforcement. cameras make fewer mistakes and can catch more than any human could. but i don't think that police should have any special rights above and beyond your average citizen, especially if it lessens their accountability or prevents me from protecting myself.
This is happening to me in Australia. I bought a voice recorder a week ago - not just to protect myself against the police, also others who have total power over me.
All escalated over the last two or three weeks. If someone else had been saying what I'm saying a month ago, I might have thought them paranoid. NOT any more.
I have just come out of hospital because of increasingly unbearable stress. I am in lock down in my own home.
Police, firefighters and public sector workers in general are bankrupting cities and states with their high pay and gold-plated benefits, most especially their pensions. And i could write a long list of problems with each - prison guards selling drugs in the prison, cops using too much force too quickly, dmv workers selling drivers licenses to illegals, etc. Solution? Fire them all. Privatize it all. Problem solved. And give parents vouchers for their school children.
If a police report is in error it is not always because they are lieing but perhaps because they are mistaken or didn't see everything. Thats why filming should be ok.
"Police officers are human" -- absolutely, the idea that "all police are liars" or "all police officers are criminal" is just standard issue prejudice. Police are people, they are us, they come from us, and if they're doing their jobs badly, we need to look to our societies that form them and ask: what are we doing wrong? People need to quit with this "stick a label on it and hate it" attitude if they ever want things to improve.
we have the technology to make our society, at all levels, completely transparent. yet some members are subject to increasingly invasive surveillance, while others are shielded entirely...why do you think this might be? i think george orwell has the answer: "all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others".
i was speechless when i was asked by the officer to show him my clitoris. And to think i was reaching for my glove box for registration...the same cop pulled me over every time he saw me, each time s bit more vulgar than the last. i was afraid to leave mt house by mtself. never was i so happy for my car to break down...i bought another and that ended his sexual abuse. wish i'd video-taped him! i knew that would get ME into trouble tho.
i was speechless when i was asked by the officer to show him my clitoris. It seems everyone has for got that this colloquialism isn't true. They are nothing more than citizens authorized by their state to enforce the law. When did they become something more than that? Not that it's a bad thing, I'm a citizen too, but when did they gain more rights than me by working FOR me!?
"It is hypocritical that cops should be able to video tape us, but that we can't videotape them. Therefore, we should be able to video tape them."
It is just as bad as the following:
"It is hypocritical that cops are allowed to speed and we aren't. Therefore, we should be allowed to speed too."
I am against laws that prohibit citizens from filming law enforcement officials, but please, don't use this argument, there are many other good ones to use.
Cops are allowed to speed when going to an emergency, and we should be able to as well. An example is taking a woman in labor to the hospital. Cops just go to many more emergencies than we do. They don't have the right to speed otherwise, although they abuse their authority and do so.
Every American should be armed with a camera and a 9MM. We need to document the abuses taking place by the police and anyone in power. The recent corruption in Bell, California is just a tip of the iceberg when it comes to corruption in America! It has and does exist on Wall Street, Banking, and in the halls of government. Corporations are more like criminal enterprises than legitimate business. Those who committed the crimes of the recent economic collapse have been rewarded, not punished!
@SolomanKane2k8 thats a good question, and i think that if the police arent doing anything wrong then they shouldnt have a problem with being recorded.
Do you guys realize how truly bad this is? This is 1984! If you know about the internet surveillance, fusion centers and the large scale spying it is bad enough, but coupled with this? I'm just waiting for them to repeal the freedom of information act and implant RFID chips in everyone. This is unacceptable! They are taking away your ability to protect yourself from them!
This is what happens when the constitution gets trashed in favor of a police state. Citizens should not be filmed without their permission. It is the mark of a POLICE STATE to have video cameras everywhere to record every action of the people/citizens. Who gave the government and police the power to routinely spy on all the citizens of Amerca, not the United States constitution. The lame, tired old excuse of public safety is not justification for spying on Americans.
Dam I could of swore freedom of press covers this? what happened to the 1st amendment? Not to mention that these officers are in public when on duty, compared to being at home, therefore have no right to expect privacy. I cant just go out and sue someone for video taping me in public. So how can they charge us for taping them? This is bullshit...
I believe this should be confronted in full force. This is our last recourse. In many ways this is the emergence of Sharia law. It has been told to me that the only way Sharia law will exist is if it is allowed to happen. Once here it will be difficult to get rid of.Right now it is time to fight this head on. The 3 states this is affecting need to stand up now and confront it as it appears in each state.
@saintearth There's been so many cases of exactly that in my own city. I resent the idea that anyone believes they can be paid to be the good guy or that you can be given the authority to murder by someone who declares they are in charge. It's the same as it ever was, self-proclaimed kings with divine authority who use their knights to fight for their glory while the surfs suffer to support their megalomaniacal oppressors. There never has been a government of the people, and at this rate...
@saintearth Paid leave just kills (amuses) me. The newspapers and P.D. always act like this is some kind of penalty, but in any other job, you know what it is called? A VACATION !
who polices the police? why can the public issue a ticket to a cop? not an individual but a group of individuals? oh oh i guess a group of people and their word doesnt equal up to a single cops word because they are perfect little angels that wouldnt hurt a fly. try youtubin police brutality. how many videos are there? and now tell me how many of those cops actually got the sentance they deserve? like one cop beating a woman, turns camera off , then on and she bleeding all over.
@jaymcd84 Dude, I didn't say that I disagreed. Quite the contrary! The police should be subject to the same amount, if not more, scrutiny than the common public. Every citizen should be allowed to document the work of the police at any given time, as long as it doesen't put anybody in actual physical jeopardy. My comment was founded in the attitude put forth by the briefness and futility of comments like "Fuck the POlice". If we're going to oppose the powers that be, we're going to need more...
...than that. This could never happen here in Norway, and if it did, I'd be the first one on the barricades videotaping every action of the police live on the web. Sometimes civil disobedience is the only solution.
this womans voice is kinda whiny but if the police arent doing anything wrong then they shouldnt fear being recorded if there not doing anything wrong

So police are allowed to film you, but if you film them you get arrested... sounds fair.
If I get pulled over by the police, I'm going to film them with audio and I won't stop if they ask me BECAUSE I will need video/audio evidence to bring to court.

Well, the thing is, people can always force politicians to change these laws, of course, they have to make them do so, force them and technically drag their fat bureaucratic asses out of their offices to hear... damn, seriously democracy has been extremely crapped on.. politicians pass laws regardless of what people think of them...
luciferiexcelsil 11 months ago
@luciferiexcelsil tyranny by majority has little benefit to any other form of government. even in a republic there are individuals who go unrepresented, and thus are easily susceptible to the winds of bias and prejudice. after all a Bill of Rights is merely a collection of words, static yet subject to interpretation.

People constantly use the logic that if you are doing nothing wrong why are you hiding it. Police say that all the time to regular citizens. So why not use the same logic on them. If they're doing nothing wrong why are they hiding it.

im not convinced that people have the right to privacy, i dont mind that the government is videotaping more and more, in fact, it might be better if it gets the human aspect out of law enforcement. cameras make fewer mistakes and can catch more than any human could. but i don't think that police should have any special rights above and beyond your average citizen, especially if it lessens their accountability or prevents me from protecting myself.
wolverineks 1 year ago

1) Break up the Fraternal Order of Police. The FOP is the single worst union in the nation.
2) The time has come to crack the whip on law enforcement.
3) Never trust authority. Authority is there to protect the powerful.
4) The day become a copper is the day I will walk the street (you know what I mean)
MeritisDE 1 year ago

The following argument is bad:
"It is hypocritical that cops should be able to video tape us, but that we can't videotape them. Therefore, we should be able to video tape them."
It is just as bad as the following:
"It is hypocritical that cops are allowed to speed and we aren't. Therefore, we should be allowed to speed too."
I am against laws that prohibit citizens from filming law enforcement officials, but please, don't use this argument, there are many other good ones to use.
hahahaspam 1 year ago
@hahahaspam

They are taking away your ability to protect yourself from them!
darthtubius 1 year ago
This is what happens when the constitution gets trashed in favor of a police state. Citizens should not be filmed without their permission. It is the mark of a POLICE STATE to have video cameras everywhere to record every action of the people/citizens. Who gave the government and police the power to routinely spy on all the citizens of Amerca, not the United States constitution. The lame, tired old excuse of public safety is not justification for spying on Americans.

There never has been a government of the people, and at this rate...

jaymcd84 1 year ago
@jaymcd84 Dude, I didn't say that I disagreed. Quite the contrary! The police should be subject to the same amount, if not more, scrutiny than the common public. Every citizen should be allowed to document the work of the police at any given time, as long as it doesen't put anybody in actual physical jeopardy. My comment was founded in the attitude put forth by the briefness and futility of comments like "Fuck the POlice". If we're going to oppose the powers that be, we're going to need more...
krissstemland 1 year ago
