I just got it, among other things because of this review and have to say that I am more than satisfied with this camera. It's very easy to use and also packs a few neat functions like the full manual option for people who want to experiment with their shooting skills.
It looks cool, it is well designed and it delivers. Definitely worth a look.
@lucassenone In the HD video modes the maximum is 30 minutes, in SD the recording will stop after an hour. So to fill a big SD card you'll have to press the recoding button a few times.
But unless you want to do stuff like catching wildlife or generally are not always next to the camera this will hardly be an issue.
Good review. But misses a few things. Like the battery performance even without the gps. I own this camera - a few shots and zooms - you would last about a 80 photos and about 10 short videos. The deadly orange cell indicator pops up. Talking of popup, there is no way to stop the flash from popping up. I use my finger!
+ side - gives excellent pic quality, 14xzoom and almost does what a DSLR & a video camera does - in a pocketable size. Summary - good buy - but buy 2 extra batteries too.
I was told by fellow that you have to have a computer with at least 4 0r 5 gig memory to process any photos done on a camera with CMOS SENSOR-----my computer only has 2 gig memory so I better not buy a camera with cmos if I intend on processing images with that computer--right?

I've reviewed alot of cameras and read many reviews. The Canon 230HS had the best reviews for the price. I just bought one on sale for $199.00 but the regular price is $299. I also obtained the accidental insurance for an extra charge but it's 2 years. I've used it since the purchase and the pictures are decent. I would recommend it.
@TechWizard0 Megapixels is a common misconception that OH IF IT HAS MORE MEGAPIXELS THE BETTER.! No. It doesn't depend on that. Depends on the sensor, etc.
if i am mainly looking for good image quality, i would mostly be turning the gps off and dont take too many videos, this or the 210? please respond!:)
@FrancCastle above average for a compact anyway...check out the Olympus XZ-1. It's not much more expensive than this but image quality/low light performance is much better..
@FrancCastle All companies make good/bad stuff. Go by individual camera, not company. The XZ-1, for it's class, has good IQ, lightning fast and good in low light. Definitely better than the SX230 and only maybe $50-70 more expensive. It's an 'enthusiast compact', meaning it's good enough for hardcore street photographers, and even as back-up for Pro photographers.

@FrancCastle Yeah the S95 is good too, and one advantage is it's more compact than the XZ-1...HOWEVER the successor to it, the Canon S100, is out in Europe soon, and it should be real good too. I've no idea about the price though..Wait for the reviews because it'll be the first Canon with the latest Digic V processor and it could be an interesting camera. THEN make your decision :)

Nice Camera. I have a video of the PERFECT MOUNT for this camera on my page. There is nothing like it on the market and it is low priced. It has 3 adjustable axis points that make awesome.

I've also read that the canon powershot sx220 HS, which is similar to this one (but it doesn't have GPS), has a better battery life. @fspilot221 if you are a traveler and you want to know exactly where your pictures were taken, it may be a must have. you can also turn the gps off and that wont drain the battery that fast.
My friend let me borrow this camera yesterday and it is a very nice camera, the only thing I did not like about the camera is it is hard to hold the camera with 2 hands since the flash pops up
I have searched a lot and found canon sx230hs better. This includes 3 months of searching for the best camera and finally bought it a week ago in blue (the same colour he is holding). I personally think that the money is well spent. Go for it man, U wont be disappointed, unless they introduce a new one after few months....
Hey man! I'm thinking of buying a serious compact camera, but cannot decide between the Canon S95 and the SX230 HS. Which one would you buy? I already own a DSLR, but want to get a pocketable camera that takes at least acceptable photos/videos. Does the wheel in front around the lens really make a big difference in handling? Furthermore, I would also use the video mode, where I think that the SX230 clearly outshines the S95. Thanks!
@confusious45 Both are great cameras, the ELPH is more compact and classy, with less zoom. The SX230 is bigger, with a great optical Zoom and maybe more comfortable for record video (wide screen).
Man I just can't decide if I should go for the elph 300/500 for the very pocketable size but the sx230hs keeps calling to me. Other then that it's black or electric blue (:

Pretty nice camera! Reasons why I decided to buy this camera and not eg. sony, panasonic or nikon compact superzoom camera was basically 16/9 screen for shooting movies and pictures that are mainly watched in 16/9 tv. The other reason was good image quality. Maybe downside of this camera is under average battery life. But that can be easily fixed with couple of extra battery's that you probably going to buy anyhow.
This still camera films better than many dedicated camcorders. One reason is the really good image stabilization, the other the 12MP sensor, which is perfect for Full HD. Combine blocks of 4 pixels and you have a resolution of 2000x1500 pixels, which is only slightly wider than 1920 pixel Full HD. Just crop the extra pixels and you have perfect color information at every pixel without interpolation. Videos of 3 or 5MP camcorders really don't look as clear. Compare for yourself.

@shawtynize You can zoom in video mode. Only in slow motion videos the zoom is deactivated.
And this camera is not waterproof. It has an underwater option, but you'll need a separate underwater casing for that.

As with all Canon small digital cameras, image and video quality are good, and so is the optical zoom performance.

My friend let me borrow this camera yesterday and it is a very nice camera, the only thing I did not like about the camera is it is hard to hold the camera with 2 hands since the flash pops up

I have searched a lot and found canon sx230hs better. This includes 3 months of searching for the best camera and finally bought it a week ago in blue (the same colour he is holding). I personally think that the money is well spent. Go for it man, U wont be disappointed, unless they introduce a new one after few months....

Hey man! I'm thinking of buying a serious compact camera, but cannot decide between the Canon S95 and the SX230 HS. Which one would you buy? I already own a DSLR, but want to get a pocketable camera that takes at least acceptable photos/videos. Does the wheel in front around the lens really make a big difference in handling? Furthermore, I would also use the video mode, where I think that the SX230 clearly outshines the S95. Thanks!

@confusious45 Both are great cameras, the ELPH is more compact and classy, with less zoom. The SX230 is bigger, with a great optical Zoom and maybe more comfortable for record video (wide screen).

I've seen your reviews&searched the internet to no avail so now I'm hoping maybe you'll see this&help me:
I know no point&shoot can do that well in a concert setting but I need one that can hold up decent in lowlight w fast moving objects(people)& has good zoom. I know that no matter what there'll be noise since even DSLRs have trouble shooting concerts but I'd like your suggestion on a camera in the $250-350area. Preferably around or sub-$300 but I can go up. Thanks in advance if you answer :)

I was wondering which camera would be better: Canon powershot SX30 IS ...OR...Canon Powershot SX230 HS?
I will be using it for making youtube videos, going to the beach and taking photos of my dog running and playing, and vacations.
now i like that the SX30 has the swivel for the screen so i can take a pic of me and my husband and see us. and of coarse like the SX230 for being smaller BUT it doesnt have the swivel :( Which one would you go with?

Pretty nice camera! Reasons why I decided to buy this camera and not eg. sony, panasonic or nikon compact superzoom camera was basically 16/9 screen for shooting movies and pictures that are mainly watched in 16/9 tv. The other reason was good image quality. Maybe downside of this camera is under average battery life. But that can be easily fixed with couple of extra battery's that you probably going to buy anyhow.

This still camera films better than many dedicated camcorders. One reason is the really good image stabilization, the other the 12MP sensor, which is perfect for Full HD. Combine blocks of 4 pixels and you have a resolution of 2000x1500 pixels, which is only slightly wider than 1920 pixel Full HD. Just crop the extra pixels and you have perfect color information at every pixel without interpolation. Videos of 3 or 5MP camcorders really don't look as clear. Compare for yourself.
