the caustics are not changing, so you could have rendered out the caustics map and used it as the plane's texture which would have resulted in a very short render time
Of course it's not exagerated, yafray takes a lot of time rendering, and you can't do that effects of light in Blender alone? Blender can only distorts the whole image behind the object, a "false" refraction , yafray does a lot more.
even friggin fast computers spend weeks to calculate and render complex scenes, e.g. MASSIVE fluid sims, advanced particle systems etc. of course, this doesn't count if you're rendering at "preview" resolution, which i normally do.
Well 20 x 30 (assuming it's 30 fps) is about 600 frames and with 40 hours it's like four minutes a frame, which isn't really *that* much... Besides, it has to factor in the refractions in the cube to cast the light like that, which is somewhat heavy on the computer. and not everyone has a supercomputer at home
vikinatorn, i wasn't saying this HAS got particles or fluid sim, just that Blender or any other similar 3d app consumes lots of memory while rendering. especially YafRay, which is so heavy that i never use it.
shiesh, 20 seconds in only 500 frames, do the math, 25 seconds per frame, standard default is 250 frames, which is ten seconds, double that, and you got 20 seconds.....
also each frame has to be exported before its rendered so that takes some time also
also its yafray which is Yet another FREE ray trace program... 1 its free so its not optimized to run effiiently and 2 its a raytraceprogram its going to take long nomatter what
@drizzith0 it doesn't work. they are changed in blender normal rendermode , but in yafaray there's no matter. :-( It should change a filter color, or something. did you have a tutorial about it?
It clearly uses caustics, and a lot of photons to get it looking so good, so it's no surprise that it took a long time to render. Also, there's no mention of the resolution the original was rendered at - that would affect the total render time. All in all, I'd say that 40 hours is pretty good going... My guess is that you don't really know what you're talking about! :P
Well, I used 2 kind of light to made the ambient like that. The 1st one, to make the caustics effect, is a photon lamp, with high quantity of photons, and low angle (to direct all photons to the cube). The 2nd one, is an area lamp, to the shadow (with about 10 samples of shadow). Using yafray I use method "full" for GI, with quality "best", photons and cache. (on the cache, low down the value of "prec." to 4 or 3, and in the photons method increse the number of photons).
To use caustics on yafray, check to use photons on your render, and use a photon lamp at the scene... Raise the number os photons of both for better results.
Can i change the cube to something like... a statue?
Then i could make a Statue of Simon and Lewis's Minecraft Characters with the words The Yogscast above. My new Background :]

You should've rotated the cube man. It would be more awesome to watch changing shape of caustics than changing color of caustics.

did you render about 500 frames?

This isnt very complex or massive and hasnt got any particles in it, so it shouldnt take 40hrs.

May be so, but 40 hours!!! its almost 2 days! the max render time ive had has been like 45min!!!

update. he used YafRay, which uses about 40 minutes for one (!) frame. yes, that's the truth, and thats why i don't use it.

BULLSHIT! Just because things are free doesnt mean that they suck. Blender is free and it works very well.[And it has a nice interface (: ]

what your computer stats(how many ram,ghz and what a graphic card)?
Halfback1990 3 years ago
graphics card doesnt make a diff while rendering i think you'll find :>

oh shit i have card that me cost 500$ and now i hear that.what is better a amd or intel cpu?
Halfback1990 3 years ago
im not sure on which CPU's are better but yeah you are better off upgrading your CPU not graphics card
Dan7aylor 3 years ago
personally, i would go for AMD

I use an RGB Key. On Blender only press "I" in the "material painel". You will see about that.
drizzith0 3 years ago
I change only the color of the cube. With a simple RGB Color Key.

@wasabeeguy change color with stay at the rgb color hing and press i for a keyframe do that again with other colors and put indirect lighting on.

To that camera animation only do "make track" (that option is a Constraints) to the object.

did you use a fresnel shader for the rainbow effect of the caustic ? for me it's more efficient and the render time is more speed.

it looks like it could be ice, glass, or jello,,,lol

Caustics? what does that mean?
Still, SWEET!!
BlenderPython 3 years ago
Very nice effect.
Still, considering the rendertime, I'd say neah.
You could have baked to texture some things, like the shadows.
Again, very nice!

nice, but whats the IOR of the cube? seems alot too high ^^
PB4U 4 years ago
It's not the IOR of the cube, he just didn't set the caustic blur in the photon lamp's settings.
warmwaddle 3 years ago
Dude you shoyld have increased the blur and search for the photons so that you wouldnt have gotten such noisy caustics.
