I think that the fast growth of technology during the past century has left us confused about what copyrights are.
If I invite people over to my apartment watch my copy of a movie, that is legal. But if I invite people over to my website to watch my copy of the movie, that is illegal.
We use concepts like "own" and "theft" fairly trivially, and with improving technology, our philosophies are becoming outdated.
