  • Wow! This lesson is very well laid out. The presentation is clear and logical. I learned a lot and may need to try the spray basting instead of pinning. Thanks.

  • I love your video and using the basting spray makes it look easy. I am having trouble finding the 505 basting spray, is there another brand that will work. Also I am concerned that the spray might harm my sewing machine. Thank you so much for the video and look forward to seeing more/

  • @puffysas

There are many brands on the market but 505 is the only 1 I recommend. I've used it for years and had no problems at all with any of my sewing machines. You do not need a heavy application! If you live in the continental US, you can buy it online and have it shipped to you if it's not at your local quilt shop.

  • thank you ever so much for sharing your knowledge. I appreciate it a lot. I am 59 years and just started to learn how to sew. Now I like to learn to make a basic quilt and read all about it. You are pretty much the only person who speaks about the back of a quilt and how to get the quilt under the sewing machine. Very well done and easy explained. Some say a 1/2 inch seam allowence is wrong, but they don't say why? I am better with a 1/2 at the beginning

  • @missvisi

The rationale for the 1/4 in seam width is to reduce bulk. When you piece all these pieces together, the seams can quickly become bulky and make the quilting part more difficult. Why not split the difference? A traditional foot is about 3/8 in thick and if you use your regular foot width as your seam guide, you'll get a width that's in between.

  • i need help with my brother lx-3125,i can't find a way to release the pressure on the foot,i always pucker my quilt tops, thank you liz weldon...liz.weldon54@gmail.com

  • @1954liz

    1. Make absolutely certain that foot is attached correctly.

    2. Check your sewing machine manual. Many machines have the ability to alter presser foot pressure. I'm not familiar with your particular machine, but if the foot's attached properly and you have that much pressure, you probably need an adjustment.

    3. If all else fails, use a really thin batting.

  • I'm 99.9% sure there is only 1 type of 505; online stores may tag it differently and that may be what's confusing you, but it's 505 spray and fix temporary fabric adhesive. The other spray adhesives made by this company have different numbers in their names, so if it says 505, you should be buying temporary basting spray.

    Patsy

  • There are several different kids of 505 basting spray, which one is it that you use. Fix temporary fabric or just 505 spray adhesive. What exactly is on the can. Love your method and can not wait to use it. Just now watched it and want to go in my sewing room and get busy but need the spray. Love your video.

  • What a life saver you are. I used your wall method, but had to pin anyway. I have had to order the 505 spray 4 times now, but it never seems to come in with the delivery's. Still the wall saved my back big time. Due to health issues, I thought I was going to not be able to make my creations much longer. Thank you so very much!!! Finishing up a Braided Friendship quilt now. The only thing I had to cut was the batting. Rip, rip, rip away!!!

  • I really appreciate you taking the time to put these video demos up for novices like me. You are an angel.

  • @vickyeday I fully agree, Patsy has the best information for beginners. She should make an online class with beginners and skype. I would pay for my class even ,

  • Thank you! You really are an amazing teacher. You should really consider leading a class in your area. :)

  • i went to a machine quilting class and was told my machine sewed too fast. anyway to slow it down, short of taking it to a dealer? i tried using the foot feeder upside down, and even sideways under my foot. would it be a big deal to have this problem corrected? could i do it myself??

  • Hey Patsy, love the videos and they are so easy to understand, you are very thorough! I have never heard of a basting wall. Would you elaborate more about the wall? Are the tiles attached to your actual home wall or they are attached to a board of some type which makes it easy to move from place to place?

  • OH nooooo... dont throw away those set up or trial pieces! They make lovely blankets for any dog or cat! When my samples get "used up" or covered beyond good use, I serge the edges (or use them to practice your binding!), and voila - Fido has a new bed!

  • Goodness! I just started sewing and I've been interested in quilting. I've searched almost every website, video, and book to help me understand how to free motion and you are BYFAR the greatest teacher yet! I'm excited to watch your other tutorials!

  • @kgudy I did the same and can not agree more. just learned how to use a sewing machine, I had no clue what a bobin was....lol and I thought quilting is easy, just put some leftover fabric together....little did I know, and now I look different at a quilt and can see how much work is in it. We beginners should get together and share our mistakes in order for others not to make it.

  • THANK YOU! excellent!

  • THANK YOU!! This is just the thing i was looking for - your tutorials are so fun and easy to follow!! Thank you fort sharing you knowledge!!

  • Wall basting question. I am a renter. Is there is a portable version of this technique.

  • LOVE!!! the spray basting on the wall tip! A definite "will do"!! Thank you!

  • Thank you Patsy! Thank you YouTube :) Theres a nice little quilted zipper bag at May your bobbin always be full website. I think its just 45" x18" piece of fabric you quilt then cut into 5 strips which become the purses supper easy and a good 1st project for us beginners :) happy quilting

  • Thank you for great tutorial. You are a great teacher. Been looking for this video about free motion quilting. Thanks again.

  • I like her. She's a good teacher in my opinion. I'd attend class every day if she taught me.

  • Patsy, thank you sooooo much for this amazing tutorial. I can't wait to get started with some free motion quilting. That is after I have taken a look at your website and other tutorials. Now, perhaps a coffee while I view some more. Thank you

  • Thank you Patsy. I am just starting a quilt and was a little nervous on how to put the batting and the two pieces of fabric together without getting those puckers. I feel so much better about it now . Thank you.

  • New quilter here. I doubt I'll be doing anything fancy with my first one but this tutorial is teaching me a lot about the process of using the machine on those three layers. Thanks so much!

  • Patsy, this is a wonderful video! You have taught me so much! Thanks! Great job!

  • Hi! Thanks for the tips! The quilt behind you is gorgeous! Just a fact, do not quite understand your language and music distracted me! I'm going to see these videos! Thanks!

  • Very informative.

  • Thanks for such a wonderful turtorial!! You make it so easy to follow and understand.

  • Ok Patsy! I've picked a wall...how many ceiling tiles do I need - just big enough for the average quilt? How do you attach them? That 505 is kind of expensive in Canada ($26 a can!)...does it take a whole can per quilt? or is there leftover? How much in U.S.? It's hard to believe that just spraying like that can hold 3 heavy layers together!!! btw...LOVE the quilt behind you. I love the look of the quilting on the 'plain ole white'...looks amazing!!

  • @a1angiem

I'm out of town, so I can't measure my wall, but I believe the ceiling tiles are 2 ft x 4 ft, so measure your wall and figure out how many you'll be able to fit on it. You can attach them w/general purpose calk. One 5.8 oz can costs around $12.99 in the US and you should be able to baste a few quilts with 1 of those cans. It also comes in a giant size can and that may be the one you saw for $26. Thanks for the compliments on the quilt!

    Patsy

  • Great tutorial!! Now I know how to use my pfaff properly!!!

  • I like your basting wall -- seems like it would help those of us with "old bones". Thanks.

  • Thank you for all of the tips. Great tutorial.

  • this is awsome! thank you for going to the effort

  • Sorry, about the duplication. This was my very first comment on youtube, and I cannot figure out how to delete it. Dott

  • I am so thrilled I found your videos..I find that yours are the very best. There was only one thing that I think you missed saying, or I nissed hearing you say it. And that was that when you spray that basting spray>> people need to have the room well ventilated. I am a firm believer in well ventilated working areas no matter what you are doing. I will look to see if any of your videos cover the different types of thread that we should use. Please do a video on Crazy Quilting. Thanks, Dott
