  • The hot cams make that noise

  • mine is the same after the stage 2 cam

  • its a honda thing dont worry about it

  • Sounds good

  • my 99 does the same thing

  • my 440ex sounds the exact same do the valves need to be done

  • Did the cam say it might require an advance on the timing? Or does it have a timing plate by the magneto that you can adjust?

  • tthats wut i ment. but where did u get it

  • XD that's WUt sHe SAID!!!!

  • Where u get plastics for da front

  • @clayflat Those are stock 400ex plastics with a 250R hood.

  • Where did you find all these parts? I have a 2000 400ex and I'm trying to redo it all over the winter

  • @MrMLG360 go to atv riders dot com. It is a forum dedicated to ATVs with literally 100,000 members now. I bought a lot of the parts from the classified section of that site

  • ya me2 VVVVV

  • i love the hood where can i get it ?

  • @ronny696969 and cpasley97:

the hood is a Quadtech hood for the 250R. It requires some fab to work. Go to fw carbon dot com and email Jay about a 400ex hood. He used to make them. They around around $100 though.

  • sounds just like a 250x four wheeler I had that was built for ice racing, sounded like that ten years ago and is still running like that today

  • hey man will that hood fit a 450 i want it so i can stick a light in that scoop

  • @sackofruit420 They make hoods like that for the 450R. Maier, Quadtech, and FW carbon all make them.

  • every 400ex ive ever worked on including my own has eventually gotten that tick so i pulled my head cover off and found that the tick was cause by the cam chain tensioner not holding tension and the chain getting loosed and smacking around, cheap fix and mine now sounds like a 2012

  • I HAVE TH SAME CAM ON MINE AND IT SOUND THE SAME AS URS,,THATS NORMAL FOR STAGE 3CAMS.

  • Sounds fine to me!!!

  • Sounds the norm to me.. How were the valve lashes when you checked?? My bike has a stg3 cam in it, it is loud.. we must remember that aftermarket cams has a more aggressive profile, will be louder.. i wouldn't worry about it if the valves are in speak.. Mine was seriously tapping the other day, turned out they needed to be adjusted, we .025 out all the way around...

  • all hondas tick like dat lol my neighborse hi powered race 450s do my 400ex does it all hondas do it lol

  • i have a 300ex and it has a stage 1 hotcam and that ticks to is that normal?

  • @zacherymead Did you have your valves adjusted when you installed the new cam?

To answer your question, yes, Hotcams make these SOHC engines make more valve noise than the stock cam. However, if it is really loud something may be wrong.

  • @zacherymead

yup i put that same stage 1 hotcam i my 300 just as long as your checked your valve clearences its ok for the little tick

  • no dude its the timing chain i had the same problem that bike has been ridden hard before and it streached the chain out.

  • Sounds like the timing chain to me.

  • Where did u get that air scoop and is hard to put on?

  • @BREAUXRACING11 The carbon fiber hood is Quadtech Hood fora 250R. It was very hard to install, and I would not recommend it. However, there is a carbon hood made for the 400ex which has a much better fit and finish. Email Jay at (fw carbon dot com) and he can hook you up.

  • did you adjust the valves on the right stroke?

  • @MrCrf450rider Yes. Noise was normal with Stage 3 Hotcam.

  • @MrCrf450rider it doesnt matter what strok you adjust the valves on. no matter what the clearance for the valves and the rocker arms will be the same.

  • my 440 does it its normal i talked to a guy named dave on a fourm for hot cams and he sad is normal for them to tick louder its not normal if they dont tick louder so your bikes fine

  • Some times thats useaul

  • pussy bike.my 400ex would kill it

  • @daynerman ... which is why you have videos of late 90's scooters and bicycles on your profile? lol Okay.

  • @daynerman get wrecked

  • my 99 does that and the valves hav ebeen adjusted 2 times and still tick my dad thinks it the cam chain slap

  • it sounds fine my bike is around the same year and its a 400ex and it has lots of preformance parts also and it sounds the same

  • hahahaha, my name(nickname) is flyboy:) my xboxlive gamertag is flyboy469, hahaha

  • where did you put your key at?

  • @mraaronperson Right fender. Watch my other video 'Built 400ex." It shows me turning the key.

  • @flyboy1294 you i watched the vid after i posted that comment, but thats for the reply

  • where did u get the hood i cant find one ?

  • @devin400ex

The hood is a Quadtech for the 250R. I do not advise you use it, the fitment isn't good. Look for a Quadtech 400ex hood on eBay. They are no longer made but sometimes you can get lucky. Also may want to email Jay at fwcarbon(.)com. He made 400ex hoods identical to the Quadtech ones.

  • its gonna make that noise no matter what with the 4 vavle system there built like that

  • mine does the same thing i have a stage 3 cam also and i have adjusted the valves twice, but it still ticks, i talked to a guy that races in gncc with a 400ex he says its soposed to tick like that with a stage 3 cam

  • @countryboy8527 Yeah I talked with a few people and Hotcams just do that. Bike was sold a few weeks ago though

  • The timing chain is worn. I completely rebuilt mine. Every thing is new crank all the way up except for the timing chain I took it apart again and I can see plain as day that it's not seating right on the cam sprocket.

  • yeah i got a 440 kit in mine and the machanic told me its supposed to do it

  • Make sure you check the Valve lash while complete engine is at room temp. I just installed a Stage 2 in my 440ex, and only has normal ticking that the 400ex usually has while cold.

  • dont worry about it my 300 does it

  • its the crank bearings mine did the same thing ! crank rod just moves a lil up and down it will tick mine did .. its hard to see the rod move up an down but i put a new crank in and it stoped ... so thats what i had to do !!!!

  • sounds like the timing chain, pretty normal sounding for an air cooled thumper engine, you may have a slightly worn cam chain

  • did u make sure to adjust the valve to the specs

  • @888WarNpeace888 Yes: .005 intake and .006 exhaust just as Hotcam specifies.

  • @flyboy1294 i would call them just to make sure u did not recive faulty item..

  • @888WarNpeace888 I've checked with people on exriders.com and this seems to be the norm with Hotcams. The removal of the decomp. mechanism and the increased valve tolerances cause a bit of a sound.

  • ive seen and heard alot of people say with the stage 2 and 3 hotcam its normal for them to tick that being said it could be a streched chain but if youve been in the motor you probly would have notced that but its just my opinion ps awsome quad

  • @01boneless Thanks!

The cam chain is a brand new CRF 450R. The engine has been totally re-done. I'll list the mods in description. I think it must just be the Hotcam making it tick.

  • i think every 400ex does it my bike did that too even after the 416 big bore i think its commen in 400ex to do this new or old
