This was bunk fronting the george lewis band. They were all dead by 1965 and we lost a true sound in traditional jazz. These greats kept the true sound long after armstrong went north and sold out for the all mighty american buck-- Thank God for the few who saved their souls.
2.17 seconds in is one of my 5 favorite MOMENTS in the entire history of music, I LOVE BUNK i cannot be anything but emotional about it, I could write 10.000 words (and probably have lol) on how great it is, or i can listen to it again and be proud that I live in the same planet Bunk lived in!!! BUNK LIVES 4EVER!!!
Great words. There's many of us Out There who think like you....we are lucky to appreciate this golden music.
If you like this you'll love 'Mahogany Hall Stomp' by George Lewis and his New Orleans Jazz Band on You Tube.......played as only black Americans can play......fantastic!
In 1971 when I was 16 years old, and when most of my contemporaries were (and probably still are) listening to the likes of Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton, my life was turned around by hearing this first recording session by Bunk. The power of this music to move me remains undiminished.
I am glad that yoi said, "most". When I was 11 I was listeiong to George Lewis, Louis Armstrong, King oliver and turk murphy... and see what this music has done to me!!!!! take a listen to my band if you like. ;)
@RobeGre I still do. I found this pokin' around in the dusky dusty archives and said: "WHOA!"! Who is THIS dude!! I loved it instantly. Talent is like gold. It's wherever you find it and Bunk is pure gold. !;-)
I may have been a little unfair to Russell. The Good Time Jazz LP sleeve says "under the supervision of David Stuart, with the co-operation and assistance of Bill Colburn, Hal McIntyre, Bill Russell and Gene williams."
I wouldn't be surprised if Russell had the main input, as he knew (and demonstrated on his AM recordings) how to get the most out of primitive equipment. I can claim to have met Bill Russell (in London), though it was merely to shake hands and say hullo.
I have not been there. So I have to take my information wherever I find them. Tom Bethell says in his book "George Lewis A Jazzman From New Orleans" that the records were made by Dave Stuart, Gene Williams and "Bill Russell". I just can't make shure that this is right !
great toe tapping music...i love it.

Thank you very much for adding this video and making known the New Orleans jazz style. Bunk was a true genius of that sound. Heil from France.
