Great video! Haha I'm new to diving and I'm having the hardest time with jumping out to far!!!! I don't try to at all i just automatically do it even when i think about not doing it! Anyone know a video or have any info that could help????
@sgtgum1 Without having seen you dive, I'm going to take a guess that as you land in your hurdle and start leaving the board, that you don't get into the ''magic position''. basically, your shoulders are forward and you're leaning almost over the board. if your coach yells ''stop'' at any part of your hurdle, you should be able to without falling in the water. see the diver at 3:20? that's the position you want to be in. also, don't throw the dive until you get well off the board. good luck
Coach Huber is the best. I was privileged to have him coach me at Univ. of Nebraska in the early 80's and in California in the late 70's. He was, and still is, a great coach and friend. Listen up kids, he will make you great. JC
you hurdle off your left leg if you're right handed, however I hurdle off my right leg even tho Im a righty so its pretty much whatever feels most comfortable for you
when you have you head up when you are about to go off the board, will that helpyou to keep you dive in and not so far out? that is my problem with my dives. i tend to go out to far.
if your doing a gainer, make sure you don't let your hips slide out or leave your arms short in your reach. If your doing a front make sure to keep your chest up in your hurdle and your head still. Always try and jump up as high as you can, don't be afraid and jump away from the board, it will do that it's self. Let the board do the work, just pay attention to technique
I've got a question about your comment: ..."or leave your arms short in your reach." I'm not sure if i understood it right, but anyway, why is this important?
you need to reach your arms up above your head on gainers/reverses on head first entries especially, first of all where your arms reach is where your feet will be when you kick out (generally) and also, if, and when you reach, this will allow you to lead the dive with a throw, jumping it higher, allowing the dive the proper distance from the board, and allowing proper spin, if you don't reach with your arms then you will not jump as high, most likely hip the dive out a bit,
was that double bounce, i dont have sound on my comp so i cant really hear anything, but i use the arm swing technique on my hurdle, but iam ganna try that, it looks pretty cool
That helped a lot, I always used to bring my arms to the 12 position as I extended my legs, and I always had to cut it short to throw my dive. This will probably let me get a lot more height. Thnx!
Great lesson! I put everything in practice the last week, and it works great, in particular the idea of reaching the 12 o'clock position when the board is at the bottom of the swing. I used to raise my arms with the upswing of the board, which is not so good. I am looking forward to a lesson on the inward dives, perhaps something on the twist. Thanks!
That helps a lot because my approach isn't that great -- I don't get enough height. Now I think it's because my arms don't reach 12 O'clock I usually stop around 10. It makes a huge difference.
Dido to what eight7000 said! I have major problems with my forwards and reverses... I just go too far from the board (due to a head injury because of not going so high from a 5331D). I'll hopefully be over at Bloomington... so I'm X-ing my fingers for that and diving as well.

A basic question. What is the usual approach for a right hander? Is it the one shown?
Which leg do you hurdle off?

and you will lead with your head and shoulders, giving the dive a whipe , nearly unsafe feel to it
