Norwegians used the "Jul" log which became the Christmas tree other Pagan religions also brought the entire tree in the hovel in order to allow it to burn in the fire through the darkest part of the year. I was happy when Sheldon mentioned it because I knew it. However, it's the northern Yulsa worship that brought the tree. As for the Saturnalia singing and decorations - pagan romans would hire actors to go from house to house and sing. Also, people would decorate their houses with red and shiny things. After northern barbarians invaded roman lands two religious practices merged. Christians (who were before pagans worshiping these festivals) continued the practice but on new religious overtone.
