I'm midway in season 2, and I noticed that Mary seemed to have thinned quite a bit. So far it's my 2nd best show behind 'Band of Brothers'. Hope they don't prolong it too much; these things destroy the shows. I gave up on breaking bad and dexter after so many seasons.

Every time I hear this I get chills :D It is so hauntingly beautiful, hearing this in the first series/season made me fall in love with classical music (or non-pop/alternative, which is what I listen to usually)
I found out about this show in some awards and I watched little pieces of it before but never the whole thing. But boy was I wrong to not start seeing it earlier!! I am completely hooked and watched the first season in half a day and am on season two now. Love it, great story, setting and acting, beautiful song too. There is nothing not to love about this show!;)
If people are comparing Downton Abbey to the new BBC 1 series of Upstairs Downstairs, then it is quite true DA is better. However, if people mean the original 1970 to 1975 London Weekend Television produced series for the ITV network, then no way. Nothing, and I mean nothing will ever come close to the sheer brilliance of that series, the writing, the acting, the characterisations were wonderful..It may have been made many years before my time, but it outclasses Downton every time.
@pinkangel901 You are too young to have seen the original UD, I am, but older than you. so you cannot really compare unless you've seen it..The original UD had a combined worldwide audience of over 1 billion people, nothing has come close since and all the critics say Downton is good, but not as good as the original Upstairs Downstairs. How right they are.
To think that critics slated this and compared to Upstairs Downstairs as being better and look at it now! i adore this! my mum literally cried when i gave her the boxset for this :P with happiness and screaming excitement of course. We hated Upstairs Downstairs,

@carolinaaohh Well noone does period drama like the british plus they kept on to their aristocracy for a long time, HOWEVER, dont forget that a lot in those period drams is just wishful thinking and it's always good not to get carried away, it's a good thing that things have changed since and even if we look fondly on those years, the servants might not agree however eh.
@Linternauter Haha, very true! :) While I do enjoy watching the way they lived back in the beginning of the 20th century, and I think it was one of the most beautiful times, it is a good thing that things have changed. It is funny to see them all so dumbfounded by things like a telephone or electricity that are so basic now in our daily lives. :)

Nothing wrong with a bit of nostalgia and seeing the good things about bygone eras. I personally wished we still lived in a time where hat-wearing was practically compulsory :)
At the same time I completely understand christinekuli's point: that every time has as many ills about it as our own time and it's easy to forget that - even with a period like Downton Abbey's where there are rather obvious drawbacks like a huge part of the population being obliterated by war, flu epidemic etc.
i love this series and i honestly believe i was born in the wrong period of time of course i would of liked to be born upper class not pore because that was terrible but just the feel and that is when England was true England and the dresses and uh everything.
I love this theme, it's almost 'Dark and Brooding' and then changes to 'Light and Airy', and back again... wonderful music and FANTASTIC series too... Can't wait for Sunday evening to come along... *sighs*
hey sounds pretty goo but towards the the end near the turn around you are missing a chord change maybe listen to the song again. but other wise it is quite nice, just get that movement in there

@phurjuzt01 Not really, I can play them both on the piano, and while its sound is similar to the untrained ear, its mechanisms are not, and nor is the song! Both are outstanding pieces of work by English minimalist composers.

hey sounds pretty goo but towards the the end near the turn around you are missing a chord change maybe listen to the song again. but other wise it is quite nice, just get that movement in there

@JDHDPr0ductions word!! not sure if i'm on the same page with 'hardcore metal' but my favourite band is parkway drive and this has become my favourite tv show. then again i'm an english major at uni and period drama has always interested me.

@phurjuzt01 Not really, I can play them both on the piano, and while its sound is similar to the untrained ear, its mechanisms are not, and nor is the song! Both are outstanding pieces of work by English minimalist composers.

@stephisacoolbean As interesting as it is to watch, I don't understand why in the world you would want to live back then. If you were poor you would remain so for the rest of your life, and if you were rich you would have to marry without love out of duty to your family. Not to mention the total oppression of women.
