I have a 1981 240d automatic, i just got it from a friend with only 140k miles on it. Only real problem its got right now is a weird thumping in the back somewhere near the wheels or axel, doesnt sound healthy at all. Gonna have it checked out but if anyone else has had similar issue please feel free to share with me your experience or solution. Car looks beautiful and runs great aside from this issue, just want to restore it to its full majesty.
My '81 manual does it in about 22 seconds or so. Did they change the speedometer in '83? Mine only goes up to 85mph, so it's really difficult for me to tell when I'm at the right speed to travel back in time.
Also I have been debating swapping out that tired old 2.4 non turbo diesel, and Im thinking of swapping a newer turbo diesel, do you think that I will get away with Emissions in AZ with a new VW TDI and a 6 speed in that thing? I mean it does run cleaner and it will go a lot faster then ever a 300D swap. what do you think? I have 2 240D's one for everyday and one for fun.
your shift point are a little off, 1st gear to 25, 2nd gear to 37, and 3rd to 60. thats absolute best 0-60 you will get I got my 1982 240D to 60 in 18.9 and it has 350K+ miles on it and it still have the original clutch, I dont get how its lasted that long but hey at least I dont have to pay out money to fix this thing, ever...lmao.
Yeah, shift at the dots. Check your accelerator linkage too, you're probably missing some bushings, allowing a fair amount of play and not fully opening the rack.
I bet you could shave a couple seconds off by shifting later. I have a 240D too, but I can't tell how fast it goes because the speedometer doesn't work.

my reply,
The newer ones are beautiful cars. These years were ugly. My escort is also is also ugly but at least it would move out of its own way. My escort is a 1991 escort pony with a 5 speed stick. I timed it on a g meter my friend has and it runs 0-60 in 9.2 seconds. This thing takes over 3 times that amount. I would not doubt a city bus would beat this in a race.
Damn, mine could annihilate that thing. I got a Turbo in mine. By the way, if you set the boost pressure low, like PSI to 2, your car will not blow up.
I had a 240d with a manual 1977, the rear end was falling apart the car was hitting the ground from the end, new springs, shocks nothing did work, ended up junking it, mechanic said unibody construction rusted so it wont hold up the rear end,its a defect in the w123.
WOW I dont know yet u jenks imported a 240D with manual transmission, almost european feeling! Its worth to show the fuel consumption to see u guys a big car can run with 7 liters of diesel oil! And this type of engine can run with cooking-oil without any modifing. Try it!
My first car was a 1975 300D (5 Cyl Deisel) I never timed it, but I think it was about 0-60 in 4.6 miles... Slow as snot, but rode like nothing else, and was an absolute tank. It had 285,000 miles on it when I had to park it due to frame rot from northern winters. I still miss that car.
Just did the valve adjustment and WOW! Its a different car! Thanks for the advice! I counted 19 seconds on my 0-60mph... Im going to have to make a new video now LOL!
for a better explaination, you need to get a RepairFlix DVD on how to do it. Basically, you just remove the cylinder head cover, adjust the gap between the valves and camshaft, then put it back together. It is easier than most people think. I had my dad do a valve adjustment on my Mercedes-Benz 300D Turbo and the acceleration from 0-60 whent from 18-20 seconds to 13ish seconds!
hehe awesome video, I remember a good friend in high school had an '82 automatic. Still the slowest vehicle I've ever driven. I had a 26' U-Haul truck packed full and it still managed 39.6 sec to 60 mph (I was bored and timed it). Still, I loved it when I drove it, definately a car with character
lol so true! my mom had a 240D automatic back in the day and I made sure I found one with a manual transmission lmao. It is actually not that bad with the stick since you can control the car's powerband which isnt much (62hp). It is one of the most enjoyable cars I have ever driven! Keeping her for a LONGGG time!
Top speed?

240d should do 0 to 60 in about 21 to 22 sec
thats what the magazines of the day said
turbo 300d is like 13 sec

I could have pushed 2nd gear a little more, but I doubt that would subtract 10 seconds from my time lol.
