Wow! I can't believe they were around that long. I used to watch them after getting home from Aliamanu Elementary school back in the 60's. I did love their show.
@krush458 I was on the show in 1974 or 1975 with my Girl Scout troop and actually was the unbirthday girl! I remember scooping the pennies, then Checkers said, no that's not right & scooped some, then Pogo did the same so the hat was full. Fun stuff!
I lived on the island of Oahu 1974 - 1977. I remember seeing Checkers and Pogo at Sea Life Park. My favorite cartoon they would show was the Mighty Heroes, I am 40 and I wonder how I remember that. Aloha!!!!! Rest in Peace Pogo.
I just learned of Pogo Poge's passing. I remember him well from KIMN in Denver and all his zany stunts. When I moved to Hawaii I was delighted to actually meet him during the filming of a commercial. R.I.P. Pogo, yYou brought joy to so many people - what a wonderful legacy!
I also lived in Hawaii as a child from 1970-1976, and I simply loved Checkers and Pogo and remember them on Hawaii Five O. RIP to Pogo, a hero to many a children
I fondly remembered C&P! At a carnival at the Gibsons Skyslide, Mr. Checkers had gone in the haunted house and got my slipper for me. I will always love C&P. Rest in peace, Pogo Poge (Morgan White)!
one of my favorite memory is being on the original checkers and pogo show in 1971......you made all of US so very happy at 3:00pm.......God Bless You Morgan "Pogo" White........R.I.P.
Rest in Peace Morgan White, aka Pogo Poge. He made my childhood most joyful every after school during my elementary days. I'll always remember his child-like silliness with the children he hosted on "Checkers and Pogo Show." I liked when they had their adventures in the "Albratross," the cartoons and games the children played. I always wanted to appear on the show. I'm sure I would've had a great time. My condolence to the family of Pogo Poge. He was a gem to the children of Hawaii.
Just read in the Star Advertiser this afternoon that Morgan "Pogo Poge" White died in Utah at the age of 86. I remember this show growing up but from what I remember KGMB didn't archive any of its shows... it kept reusing the tapes so very few archived shows are left anymore.
I was on the Checkers and Pogo show twice. The 2nd time I was sitting up on the top right corner and when Pogo walked in he'd playfully pat my head and mess my hair with his hand. Loved this show every day until I outgrew it in the late 70's.
I watched this show every day after school from 1972 to 1975. Always liked Superspy, and his theme song handily modeled after the theme song from Jesus Christ Superstar..I remember one clip of him running up the street with a pie, with some stressful chase music in the background, runing and running, then finally he ran right up and pushed the pie into the camera, simultaneously accompanied by the big pie "Pow" music.. hilarious.. Friday is Pie-day.. Why did Pogo never get hit?
I lived in Hawaii in the 70's and it was all about Checkers and Pogo every day after school. Never missed it.
In fact, my brothers and I were in their studio audience and my younger brother, Tim, was chosen for the Very Merry Un-Birthday segmant and he got a huge handful of pennies on air.
Does anyone remember them doing the comercial for "Pick-A-Pop", and the "Pick-A-Pop Hula". Everything was better, even rainy weather, when you were doing the Pick-A-Pop Hula :)
I so absolutely loved this show when I was living in Hawaii as a kid. I tried so many times to get on the show, but my parents never wanted to take me (cheap bastards). I did get to meet them though at Hickam AFB, and once at the 50th State Faire. It is such a shame they don't have shows like this on any more.
Classic! I remember when the kids would grab a handful of pennies and put it into the cone birthday hat and pogo would always grab a couple of additional scoops of pennies and push it into the hat so the kid would have more to take home. Where the heck did you get this from? Thanks for sharing, brings back many memories!
Wow!!!! Amazing to see this again...I've remembered the jingle but haven't heard it again in all these years. I got to meet Pogo once and got his autograph but then misplaced it within a year.
I lived in Hawaii from '79 to '81. I totally remember running home of this the bus everyday to get the good seat to watch C & P. I remember going to school with one of the kids from the show.
same here. I grew up watching them EVERY afternoon after school from 1967 until 1971 when my family and I moved to Alaska. I missed watching that show. :(
I delivered papers for the Honolulu Advertiser (the morning paper, as opposed the the evening Star-Bulletin) from 1975-77 and I always caught the morning repeat of "C & P" and then the new show in the afternoon.
How I loved Checkers and Pogo...
I once saw the guy who played Checkers on an episode of "Hawaii Five-O".
I lived in Hawaii from 1969 to 1974 and used to watch this everyday after school on our first colored television. I remember their adventures - there was one series where they were traveling in a big blimp and their enemy was (Secret Spy??). When he wore that nylon stocking over his head and prowl around I would have nightmares. Then there was that commercial for that "Exchange" drink and they always had this contest where people would build things out of the cans.
That was my favorite juice back in the days. I used to love to feel the coldness of the can when I fill it with ice cold water. My favorite flavor was grape. One day I'll play my ukulele and sing the commercial jingle on youtube.
omg, i can't believe i'm seeing this!!!!! i grew up watching checkers and pogo every afternoon religiouisly! hell, was on the show twice!!! (but never got to do the "merry un-birthdaty", gunfunit!)
Woah, Brah! I know I'm kinda a year late! but, nah, Braddah! I knew Pogo Poge. His real name is Morgan White. And he was a stout LDS (Latter-day Saint). A really nice guy. So, nope! NO DOPE! He nevah chance 'im!
Does anybody have the hotdog eating contest that Checkers and pogo use to have? If so pls post it, I think it would bring back a lot of memory for a lot of people.
that's right! I would watch this show every weekday after school. My family and I lived in Paia at the time and I went to Doris Todd Christian School and when the bus dropped me off at Maui Beach Hotel where my mother worked I sat in the lobby and watched Checkers and Pogo. Then in '71 we moved to Alaska and that was that.
OMG I went to Kipapa during that same time, what a small world. The Popcorn and Ice cubes quote brought it all back too (no wonder I can't remember anything now, my head is full of usefully info like that ;-)
I remember how they would pull kids out of the studio audience if it was their birthday, and let them reach into a jar of coins and pull out as many as they could. If I recall, they were all pennies, so the kids would net a whopping 35 cents or so. I also remember how C&P went to the zoo and the cameraman got too close to the rhino, which charged him. I think the final shot was the cameraman with a sling around his arm.
I wonder if you have any KIKU 13 bumpers, commercials,or station IDs from the 1970s for you to upload?.I know Kikaida,Kikaida 01,Go Ranger,Robocon,Inazuman,Zaboga, and Kamen Rider V3 was shown in KIKU 13 back in the 1970s.I was born in 1985 which was way too late for me to experience the Kikaida craze in Hawaii and I'm a 2nd generation Kikaida fan.Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"CHECKERS AND POGO" was aired by KGMB-TV,a CBS affiliate in Hawaii
from 1967 to 1982. most of these people are no longer with us,,but the
memories they left the younger TV viewers with, are Golden! of all the
memorable charecters in the show, was "Superspy of Pigstyvania" and
"Sylvester"-played by Jerry Cox(AKA "KimChee")and of course,Jim
Demerest and Morgan White,as C and P! the cartoons of course,,were
the best-everything from "SPEED RACER","PRICESS KNIGHT"and
"THE BANANA SPLITS"-Thanks!
