Yes probably - you can always point the rod at the fish more and rely on the reel's drag. Some of the bigger GT flies are a bit of a handful to cast on a 10wt though.
The take would have been awesome! I got my first travelly (blue) on a six weight in Vanuatu for shits and giggles and took 40 mins to land and weighed in at 3kgs. Not bad i thought for a trout rod!!! Biggest was a 12.1kgs on the scales with a 9 weight. Locals wanted to eat it and i wanted to let it go and they didn't understand why! poor fish, wish i caught it with out being seen by the locals
